Near coast of Yalta (1864) by Ivan Aivazovsky
Her name is Bramble and she was a requested stone carving for a charity fundraising event. I love the lower part of the bear that has some really interesting striping going on, almost like she's sitting in water.
She's a much darker stone than I'm used to work with, and a bit tougher to carve. Took about 6 hours.

it's like, definitely still mansplaining if the man is dominating the conversation unintentionally and he would totally stop if you asked him to, actually. like, the term exists to describe a phenomenon that arises from the implicit bias that women are expected to simply be less knowledgeable about things. it doesn't matter if he's doing it on purpose or not. he does it cause he expects women to not know things or to not have any input. maybe don't fucking expect women to stand up for themselves every single time they have to have a conversation with a man because that shit happens like daily for a lot of women
genuinely, sincerely, if you are a man you need to learn to shut up when you're talking to women
you need to catch yourself explaining something to a woman and go "oh wait, you probably know about this right?"
you can do what you want forever but so can everyone else. your desires don’t make you into the king of the universe surrounded by willing and obedient slaves.
I know exactly why “do what you want forever” is taken to mean “you aren’t allowed to stop me from doing what I want to you forever” but that rapist mentality only gets you so far with me and for the most part it’s six feet underground.
I wonder why white queer people would be so enamored with a social technology that forces peaceful proximity on people who feel like they aren’t allowed to say no or I don’t like that or get the fuck away from me….

i actually quite like asynchronous online courses (i work full time + am good at setting my own deadlines + am frequently in pain in ways that make driving to and being in classrooms difficult so they’re good for me on multiple levels) but oh my christ. oh my motherfucking god. having to reply to ai generated discussion post answers. because discussion participation is part of my grade. kill kill kill.
if i am ever in a position to teach a course. which while not super likely to occur is more and more vaguely likely to be to possible unless i lose my mind again. i will do what one of my english professors did back in the day. which was that if you pulled an a on the course work he just disregarded the 20% he built into the syllabus that was essentially your participation grade (discussion post replies, etc). he explained it as that percentage could never hurt you, only help you, and i’ve always thought that was a very equitable way to do things.
like i can see the arguments that could be made against this approach, i just think the benefits overall outweigh them.

does the body ALWAYS have to keep the score? maybe we could just have a friendly game this time. maybe we can just have fun without putting numbers on it
this is going to be difficult -> i am capable of doing difficult things -> i have done everything prior to this moment -> this difficulty will soon be proof of capability
this difficulty will soon be proof of capability.

Kelly Link said she tells her students to list two things before they start writing:
- what are the books that would make you the happiest to be compared to
- what are the story elements that keep you reading even when the book straight up isn’t good
Because you’re aiming for the first one. But during the process you will be writing something that isn’t great, probably. So what elements would it need to keep you going even if it isn’t great.
I like that a lot. I was like I’m gonna make a list now. But in my head the list was just like
1) when there’s a character who is gavroche
2)
whines in migraine.
