10000 YEAR OLD ROCK ART OF GIRAFFES FOUND IN LIBYA LET'S GO
YES!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
of note: 95% of libya is desert, and giraffes are not found there! but this predates not just the libyan desert, but the entire sahara desert it's a part of! giraffes aren't found there any more and this is a memory of a time when things were giraffier
also apparently this rock art dates across multiple periods spanning thousands of years? but i couldn't find much detail on that so i can't give specifics
but yeah, this isn't just a memory of giraffes, but of giraffes now absent encountered by people just 2000 years (the difference between the late roman republic and today) out of the ice age, in a climate unfamiliar to any of the hundred billion people born since the desertification of the sahara drove the ancient egyptians to the nile, near the start of the agricultural revolution
the time between this and the birth of the sahara was nearly as long as the time between the birth of the sahara and now, in which all recorded history is contained, and all languages we can recognise at all - the language and culture of these people would be totally alien to current libyans, twice the difference between the oldest european language and english, predating all but libya's mountains!
and we have pictures of giraffes of the time! what a beautiful gift from such a distant past

Can I be honest with yall I don't want to hear SHIT against cishets at pride this year
"But it's not FOR them!!!" The biggest military power in the world belongs to a christofascist nation overseen by a felon found guilty of 34 federal crimes and has greenlit a gestapo with more direct funding than the entire military of Canada for the purpose of ethnic cleansing. Let Hetero Jessica throw some biodegradable glitter at a municipal parade

RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.
May update for @2026-book-bingo
Non-Human Main Character: Platform Decay by Martha Wells started may 5th. finished may 6th. loved it. i need more Three.
Science Fiction - Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir saw the movie may 20th after finally seeing enough posts about it on my dash. got the book and started it may 20th. finished may 21st. i liked having seen the movie first so i could think of it as a movie on its own separate from the book and not thinking "this isn't how it was in the book" at every difference. both the movie and the book were great tho.
Recommendation - Storybook Ending by Moira Macdonald got recommended this book by the cashier at b&n in april. did a mix of listening to the audiobook and reading the physical book. started may 27th. finished may 28th. i wasn't super impressed with it. when the premise is "2 women keep leaving notes for each other in a book at a bookstore because they each think the other is the hot guy at the used-books desk" i was kind of expecting them to end up together. also the pacing was kind of weird? it really dragged on until they found out what was going on, and then it was a couple pages of emails describing stuff happening between the 2 characters? maybe if more of the friendship between April and Laura was actually shown after the reveal, it would have been better.
Read It & Do It - Folk Shawls: Wool Peddlers Shawl (this one is a link to ravelry) last october, i got 4 huge boxes of yarn in an auction. it seemed like a mix of someone's personal stash and yarn that came from a store closing? there was a bag of 8 skeins of yarn with the note "wool peddler's shawl" tucked into one of the skeins. so I bought the book the pattern was in to make it. started gauge swatch Feb 15th. finished gauge swatch Feb 20th. started the shawl Feb 21. used a little over 5 skeins. bound off may 24th. blocked on May 30th. my project on ravelry is here, but i'm also including a pic of it here under the cut.
This is why I have TikTok

now i don’t know enough about omegaverse to say anything definitively but from what i have seen it certainly looks like it emulates insects much more than wolves.
like if you’re looking for an animal with strictly defined castes and extensive use of pheromones you are looking for ants i think
Love that this alien arm is clearly just green bubblewrap. 70s prosthetics I love you
Classic SF once again betrayed by a clear, static-free signal and a flat digital screen
This is how I remember classic Who and Star Trek, folks, with signal ghosts and scanning lines (but usually with more static/snow)
Sharing this on my main because it appears from the notes that it's useful for some modern viewers.
You KNOW classic SF used the limited displays of CRT television and the static of transmitted signals the way theaters use stage makeup and lighting to make inexpensive props look great fine— take advantage of the medium! But it's hard to imagine how it looked if you've only seen Blu-ray HD restorations.
I swear to you, despite classic Who using bubble wrap for years as one of its go-to materials that reflected light in interesting ways, we never realized that's what it was.
