Ok, I just watched the finale. I have to say I expected way, way worse, even if I still find the writing underwhelming, which perhaps was not what this moment called for.
My favorite scene certainly was JAMMF ghost's revisited apparition, which took us back to 1743 and Inverness. That brought a tear, although I am not sure if that was over JC or the entire experience, as a whole. And I am sure many would have hoped to turn back time, and feel that very special thrill we all experienced while watching Season 1 for the very first time.
I mean, it's a really lovely & poetic (and predictible...) flashback, so yes: I was bawling, but don't tell anybody, ok?
I think people's emotional reaction to what is a not so good finale - yet probably the least problematic option Matt B. Roberts considered - has a lot to do with their own sentiments being dragged in the entire mix. Nostalgia, grief, relief... you name it.
As for the open ending, well. I am an idiot who likes to think they will resume their lives on the (f)Ridge. They've earned it. We deserve it. Incidentally, this leaves the door open to a spin off cinema project or, as Parade Magazine already speculated - and I have to wonder why - a tenth season of sorts:

Anyways, I am surprised nobody seems to have noticed this:
And then the Easter eggs in that bookshop scene, complete with...
MY EYES, Davie the Lewd Driver - I think we can safely speculate whose idea it was. Right?
Maril the Nepobaby Protector - again, I think we can safely speculate whose idea it was. No, not the same people.
Overall, 'bittersweet' was a good description. But why do I still feel somewhat hungry, after 71 minutes of watching their attempt to tie all the loose ends? Perhaps gluttony, but I don't think so.
PS: gracias a ti, siempre.
