I appreciate the sentiment behind posts like "if you can learn how to pronounce [european surname] you can learn how to pronounce [non-european surname]" but it does unfortunately rely on the base assumption that your average english speaker actually does make an effort to pronounce european surnames correctly

like it definitely is still racism when people are like "uhhh I'm not even gonna try to pronounce that one" about a japanese or swahili name but you need to understand that english speakers do this when talking about irish and polish names too

Took me until about halfway through college before I realized “study” means “play with the material in a variety of ways until you understand it” and not just “read the assigned chapters and do the homework” and I think that probably should have been discussed at some point prior to that.
