Sneak Peek Sunday: Number 1
Hyde was having a hard time concentrating on setting up their weekly podcast. It never failed to make him laugh that all those years screwing around in Forman’s basement would lead to a successful show. In ode to those days they called it The Basement.” They talked about everything. Eric talked about nerd shit, they talked about stuff going on in the world, an a lot of the time they just let the conversation flow. It had started small, but now they had quite a following and people were clamoring to be on their show. Despite his slacker persona he took it seriously. He was proud of what they had accomplished but now it was second to his thoughts about Jackie. Her, Makenna, and his comments was all he could focus on.
Hyde threw done his notes, “Fuck it” he muttered to himself. He needed a smoke. He patted his pockets and realized he had left them at home. Hyde dug out his phone so he could call Forman and ask him to bring them to the studio, he nearly dropped it when it started to ring. He glanced down. His heart nearly stopped. He didn’t know the number but it said California. His mind went straight to Jackie. He knew it was a long shot, but a man could dream. Hyde pushed “answer”
It wasn’t Jackie. It was a very pissed off Donna.
“What the hell you bastard? What the hell do you think you’re doing?”
Like Jackie, he hadn’t talked to Donna in five years. The last time they talked she had yelled at him. Pretty much as the same as she was doing now. His temper was the same. He still didn’t like being yelled at. He didn’t need this. Despite knowing what was about to come his way was deserved, he couldn’t stop himself from being a jerk.
“Long time no talk Donna. Glad to see we can pick up right where we left off, with you having a hissy fit. I don’t need this drama. What the hell do you want?
Donna nearly came through the phone. “You don’t need this. Well Jackie didn’t need your comments. She didn’t need you calling her doll or grasshopper. You completely abandoned her and then you decided to pop out of the hole you fell in. The god damn gall.”
Hyde closed his eyes. Donna calling to chew his ass was no one’s fault but his own, but it still felt good to hear from her. He missed her. Missing her didn’t change that each word was a dagger in his tattered conscience. It was hard to be righteous when he knew he was solidly in the wrong.
He hadn’t commented to hurt Jackie. In a weird way he wanted her to know he was happy for her, even if seeing her in love with another man was killing him. Hell he still wasn’t sure what had possessed him to use Grasshopper and Doll. Donna had gone silent waiting for him to talk. He slowly and quietly let out a pathiec apology.
“I didn’t do it to hurt her Donna.”
“Really Hyde. Give me a break. Not one fucking word since you told her you weren’t going with. Then you call her doll. Not hurt her my ass. You know what Hyde. What does it matter? She still hurts. You broke her heart. She is finally happy. She loves Rafe. Leave her alone Hyde.”
With that Donna disappeared back into a world the didn’t include him. He wish he was a better man and he could focus on all that Donna said, but what he couldn’t get out of his heart was the echo “She loves him” The only thing that had ever hurt more was when she yelled “Well, I don’t love you.” Hyde pushed his heartbreak down as far as he could, he had a podcast to focus. His love for Jackie would be waiting for him in the quiet. There was no running away from that.
