Next to nothing. Boxes are severely empty and the seed stash needs refreshing. So many times we run out of energy, run out of gumption, run out of gas, run out of nice things to say, or run out of smiles. Sometimes it’s hard to find the nice words to boost a friend, share a loving thought, or sit in silence. Sometime we are next to nothing. Sometimes we are running on empty. The lesson for this spring has been … persistent patience with perfected timing. Knowing the days we are heading into there is never going to be enough places to grow food. Start growing food everywhere is the new motto! Today we finished up three new garden boxes that could potentially feed more than enough people when science project number two for summer 2023 gets underway. Thank you @dabuck50 for your help! You may have read in the post from yesterday, the canning science project number one for 2023, that is already in full swing. Now with the new boxes right out side the door we have more options for local, home grown food to fill jars. As I figure out the plan, even though we are getting a late start, the explanation of science project number two will be coming soon. A couple weeks ago we were dusted with what I am calling our last bit of winter snow. So what does one do when the snow is on the ground and there is no motivation to drive around? Well, this one jars up food. Scientifically project number one, can up at least one case of 12 quart jars each month. Each case will consist of four jars of a small batch of dinners. So each case then has three different dinners which would or could be used for the four weeks of the month. Understand? So if there is food on the shelf for a year each month will consist of at least 3 dinners a week from ajar that are different and each month would be completely different meals. Complicated. I know. Boyfriend likes variety. No repeats and no left overs. 😮‍💨 First sub category of project number one is … all food in jars must be locally grown and easily accessible. Sub category two of project one is the idea that all food in jars must be inspired by feasts, festivals, turn of the wheel, and so on. For example: March, now has three new meals in the pantry that correspond to the celebration of my Irish roots with jars full of comfort foods from Ireland such as Seafood Stewp, Coddle, and a Lamb Stewp. Oh. My. Goodness. Thank you @kendall_bug for the reminder that yesterday was black dog day! Everyone, this is Sailor, the last of the black dogs in the house. We have had black dogs for well over 16 years and this one is still going strong! We love all the #blackboys They are not hard to take pictures of, they hide in the dark very well, they beg for food just like any other dog and they are perfect time keepers. If you are at a loss for what time it is just watch what your black dog is doing. They will let you know the schedule. Very punctual. Sailor loves to go for rides, just like any other dog, he loves the dog park, he loves to run, he likes to swim, sorta, he loves dinner time and breakfast, he loves to play after each meal and he cherishes his walks to the forest where he will always return with a stick. Always. But his most favorite thing in the whole world is laying on the front porch when it’s 85 to 90 degrees out side ( the porch get to about 120 😳 ) and just pant for hours. He is the heat seeker. He may have a grey muzzle but don’t let that fool you, it’s the smile that will get you first. Here it is, Autumn. Not much was grown in the garden this year due to the community well needing to be drilled a few more hundred feet deeper. Water conservation has been an interesting challenge. BUT! BUT! The water problem has not stopped my pressure canner from producing more home@are meals for the next year! To date we now have 7 different chili’s canned up with 7 different types of meat all the recipes are from a vegan cook book. 😂 Yes, I know what I said. But who knew them vegans could make a mean tasting chili!? All that was needed was bits of meat. The chili pictured is a pumpkin, butternut, game hen concoction that is pretty darn amazing. Looking for more ways to use up all the squash that people have passed on. Sometimes the battle is to big for one human. When the battle seems overwhelming and the enemy looms in the space before your eyes one must concede or call in reinforcements. This year is the real reason for the reinforcements. This could be said of all aspects in life but this year in the 50+ tree orchard the aphids were so out of control and the tent caterpillars never ended we need a little help from our friends. Thankfully, they have moved in, set up camp and have almost completely wiped out the entire population of caterpillars and aphids in just over a month.
