It irks the fuck out of me when people talk about masculinity and femininity as if they are naturally existing things and not a random collection of traits grouped together to enforce social norms of gendered labor. I understand they can be useful shorthand in casual conversation where the meaning can be assumed from context, but to talk about them as if theyre just neutral concepts is completely fucking insane.

this is why "healthy masculinity" is a sham concept meant to coddle the egos of those paper-skinned about the mere mention of toxic masculinity btw. it associates good values / behaviours that should be gender neutral (and are) with being intrinsically masculine, thereby enshrining the importance of these values in their Intrinsic Manliness and not their moral value (ie show integrity because it's What A Man Does and not because it's the right thing to do). It implicitly codes the opposite negative behaviours as either Unmanly (hence embracing No True Scotsman / Not All Men par excellence, a bug and not a feature of these constructs) or Feminine (being deceitful, jealous, not collaborative). "Healthy masculinity can exist in women/nonbinary people" has been proposed to attenuate this and like idk what to tell you but telling people who aren't men that the positive traits / values they possess are the Part Of Them That's Like A Man (the ideal) is some literally Medieval level misogyny.

This is because healthy masculinity as a concept is rotten to the core; it proposes to try and give a softer version of a (culturally variable, I admit) construct divorced from the oppressive hierarchies it was created to reify, mythologize, and uphold, for the sake of protecting the aforementioned bruised egos, but you cannot dissociate it from its original purpose which was to define and therefore enshrine patriarchal social orders (as the second rb illustrates really well). This is to say nothing of the definitions of healthy masculinity that say the quiet part loud and propose benevolent dictatorship ("lead with humility"), effectively affirming the patriarchal order as Correct, but we can Totally Do A Nice Responsible Aragorn-esque Version Of It, Guys. The very act of trying to propose a Nice version of obsessing over whether you meet some arbitrary standard of Correct Gender Performance is an exercise in absurdity.
