OH MY GOD THIS IS THE BEST DAY EVER
Last month I caught Covid, and right at the start of my symptoms I saw this post. For the next 8ish days, I was HAUNTED by this song. It played on a loop in my head for hours. I would wake up in the middle of the night covered in sweat singing “…mixed with Zach Galifianakis” as it bounced around in my virus-addled brain. It was literally inescapable.
Anyway as soon as that ended, the Morbin Time memes started so you can imagine how that went for me, who would be deliriously sick for another 5 days.
Happy 3 year anniversary to this post, Zach Galifianakis still haunts me in my fucking dreams like the predator
Sorry we really went from free the nipple, take back the night, slut walks, and ending gender/sex segregation in sports being fucking milquetoast feminism 101 concepts to fucking girl dinner and "I just worry about fairness if we let trans girls play against cis ones" and "it was right of that woman to call the cops on a black man for existing near here in public during the day time because men are all violent monsters" and "radical feminism isn't transphobic we just need to kill all men including trans ones those oppressive traitors" and I will legit never be able to be normal about it. What the FUCK happened. I'd say I wonder what the feminists of my youth would say about this but I'm one and lemme tell ya I want to throw up. Go fucking read bell hooks or do something else useful please because all of this learned helplessness, gender essentialism, and transphobia dressed up as feminism is actively holding us back.
I kept forgetting my nighttime antidepressant so I set an alarm where the sound was a recording of me saying "HEY. TAKE YOUR FUCKING PILL" because I thought it would be funny. It was funny about three times, and then it started making me mad and I'd dismiss it right away to make it stop. So I handed my phone to my partner, who made another recording sweetly saying "Okay Shira, it's time to take your medication" and now I don't get mad anymore and I take my pill. The "compassion over punishment" camp has gotta get something wrong one of these days

i love women
“When the handle has snapped off the basket that held all your eggs…” gone girl tier monologue
wow she read them down
When you manage a fabric store in a midwest town, you see this played out in real time. Young women coming in during that first year of marriage - when their husbands go to dental college - pert, bubbling with creative plans. Then, four years on, you help them shift to the reality of balancing budget with creativity - and they learn the value of that inexpensive flatfold table that they used to badmouth - to make that 2nd & 3rd baby their own quilts. And they're exhausted. And they're scared. And they are 1000 miles away from family.
And you have your staff play with their kids while you hold them in the tiny restroom as they come completely undone because they just found out that their golden boy husband is having an affair with the someone he's been doing residency with for the past three years.
He confessed that he'd rather be with the other woman but she's of a different faith and it's more important to have kids than to be happy. And no. No he will not grant her a divorce. And he will not stop seeing the other woman - because he's a man. It's his right.
TRUE story.
Also - She was NOT THE ONLY ONE to fall to pieces in our store for similar reasons.
I loath the ideology of "tradwives". It is a false doctrine preach by Patriarchy not a divine being.
It is the nature of evil to hide this way.
.
This is 100% what happened to the host mom I've been au-pairing for. And to many other moms my friends have been au-pairing for.
Married out of college, 4 kids, he spent 15 years building up his career while she took care of the house and the kids. When he was earning $600k a year suddenly he started to pull away - she wasn't as pretty anymore, the kids were loud, the house was a mess... She wasn't good enough anymore. He got himself a flat. He got her me and my precedessors to help with the kids. No, they can't divorce, that would make him pay her money for the kids and he didn't like that. Every once in a while a bill would be unpaid. My weekly checks would bounce. We lived in a $1,5mil house around DC and our gas or water was turned off more than once.
Somehow he was always out of money.
By accident she learned from a friend of a friend that he was actually seeing a young lady lawyer for a few years now. It wasn't her, it wasn't lost interest. He was just a piece of shit.
Thankfully, she had family that took no shit and they stood behind her and borrowed her money for lawyers to force the divorce now that she had proof of him cheating. She's spent tens of thousands to get there while he was resisting every step of the way - because without divorce he wouldn't have to pay her alimony, he could just throw scraps whenever he wanted and still pretend to be a good dad.
She's spent tens of thousands and two years to free herself from this man, and when she could finally go to work (thank fuck she finished college) she was earning $25k a year.
She only managed to get away with the support of her parents and family. Through the au-pair grapevine I've known other families like that. Too many. Lady down the street tried to commit suicide when same happened to her - she was from Taiwan and had no support to get free. And people around scorned her for being "dramatic" - women who held on to their places with their fingertips talked shit about her, because their own husbands would never...! Right?
Right?
This? This is the kind of shit that first wave feminists and suffragettes were fighting against. Hell, even into second-wave feminism.
This? Is why conservatives want to take away no-fault divorce--because if some dude says no to a divorce and you don't have any (IRON-TIGHT) evidence of cheating? Then you're stuck in that situation and he doesn't have to pay a drop toward you and your kids. He can go get a flat, fuck his mistress, and you will starve with your kids until you can get some kind of proof of him cheating and a judge who likes you.
Now imagine all of this horror movie shit, AND you can't open a bank account without this piece of shit opening it with you. That was what women dealt with until about the 70s when we were finally allowed to open bank accounts with a man's signature.
That is what conservatives and fundies want to take you back to. When this shit was just the fucking norm.
There are old white guys still alive who remember who damn nice it was when a woman couldn't open a bank account without a man's signature and his dad could go live a double life with a mistress with zero repercussions and oh how they slather and drool for those times. And how they have waxed poetic about these halcyon days to their desperate daddy-issues sons now eager to please and without the social skills or emotional maturity to understand the fucked up nature of it all.
I'm willing to bet there's like 2 or 3 Tradhusbands(tm) out there for every Tradwife you see, they just haven't found someone they can sink their claws into. Which should maybe terrify you. This Tradwife(tm) movement should really be considered a canary in the coal mine.
And for the record, that whole “women getting their own bank accounts” thing happened in 1974, which was only 50 years ago. My mother was born that year. My father was 5 years old. My grandmothers couldn’t have bank accounts without their husbands’ permission until several years into their marriages. It was NOT that long ago.
Another factor is that the promises made to these girls are SO appealing. They’re brought up with Disney princesses and baby dolls and every time they think an adult is unfair they’re told “well, when you’re a grownup you can choose to do it differently with your own kids”, since motherhood is the extent of any authority they’re ever expected to have.
The damsel in distress narrative is alive and well. And who among us wouldn’t like for a gentle, devoted somebody to enter our lives, love us enormously, solve all our problems, provide the funding for us to have fun all day without ever needing to work, and prevent anything bad from ever happening to us again? They’re sold on the idea that their husbands will be devoted protectors who will never let any kind of harm come to them. They’re sold on the idea that having babies will be fun and glamorous, that it’s all about dressing up their “mini-me”s in cute outfits and baking cookies. They’re sold on the idea that if they can just cross the finish line and secure a man, they’ll finally have any measure of autonomy and control over their own lives. Unfair things won’t happen anymore. Bad things won’t happen. The world is big and scary, but their valiant knights will keep them safe.
Unfortunately, valiant knights are in pretty damn short supply. Statistically speaking, the most dangerous man in a woman’s life is her husband:
1 in every 3-5 women experiences physical and/or sexual violence from an intimate partner in her lifetime. (Yes, every 3-5 women. Not just “those” women. Your community is not somehow exempt. Think of 5 women you know right now— family members, friends, coworkers, classmates. Statistically, one of them will be a victim of abuse from a partner.)
Of these women, 42% report injuries caused by the violence
These women are 1.5x more likely to become infected with an STI
These women are 16% more likely to have a miscarriage (and while this can obviously be traumatic as hell to women from any cultural background, girls raised as breeding cattle to be fruitful and multiply take this pretty hard; if you believe having children is all you’re good for, “failing” at it does unpleasant things to your sense of self worth)
Up to 38% of all murders of women are committed by their intimate partners
Hey, while we’re here, wanna hear some of the risk factors for intimate partner violence?
Harmful masculine behaviours, including having multiple partners or attitudes that condone violence (sounds a lot like “traditional masculinity” touted by tradhusband wannabes)
Community norms that privilege or ascribe higher status to men and lower status to women (Never mind the complementarian mantra of “different but complementary roles and responsibilities” for men and women. Never mind the fact that the male roles and responsibilities entail higher pay, mobility, and social power.)
Low levels of women’s access to paid employment (but we want to be stay at home mommies!*)
Low level of gender equality (discriminatory laws, etc.). (Pay no attention to the revocation of abortion and contraceptive access etc.)
(Risk factors and stats from the World Health Organization)
Of course at a certain point these girls do grow up, and there’s an argument to be made that, as grown women, they ought to “know better”. But to be fair, if you’re raised to believe this is the capital-T incontrovertible Truth all your life, if everybody you know continues to feed into this belief system, you’ve been provided with (what sound like) good reasons not to believe anyone who ever tries to tell you differently, and there’s next to no way out… how exactly could you know better?
(*Regarding Stay At Home Mothers: I have incredibly mixed feelings on the subject. I do think it’s super beneficial for children to have individualized full-time care, but it’s also ridiculously dangerous for women to voluntarily give up complete financial control over their lives to their husbands purely on the hope that he’ll remain as beneficent as he promised at the altar. My mom stayed home with my siblings and I growing up, and I’m the first to acknowledge that it’s grueling, thankless, important work; I don’t mean to direct any shade to these women for wanting what’s best for their kids, but I do have some disdain for the self-righteous and stubbornly naive ways they often choose to discuss it, especially the tiktok tradwife variety of them.)
My honest advice if you are reading something (especially something academic or non-fiction) that you don't understand is to read it again. And again, if you need to. And again.
I read the same three or four pages of the new network analysis paper probably six times yesterday, and at some point I had the math notation page on Wikipedia open for reference, and I don't have a subject matter expert's understanding but I do get more of it than I did when I started. And the next time I read it I'll understand it more.
Literally work it out sentence by sentence if you have to. You can learn how to understand things, even if it takes a lot of iterations.
just wanna say i am a big fan of this trope specifically

I watched an insane amount of TikTok and other short form videos for the story I'm writing right now. I gotta say, afterwards, I found myself picking up my phone and opening the apps, almost unconsciously. I was walking and I thought about watching some vids at the same time. I was on hold to the ATO... maybe some videos.
I also happen to specialise in gambling addiction (although I'm not practicing in that area right now), and all I could fucking think about was how these fucking apps were conditioning me in the same fucking way gambling apps do. To be constantly plugged in, consuming. To not even think about just picking it up and having a look. To feel bored when I wasn't watching them, to think about watching them when I wasn't watching them....
That shit is fucking evil.
I deleted it. I'm not exposing myself to that.
That shit will fry your dopamine/reward system so fucking bad you will never read a book or watching a movie again without it.
Love yourself and your potential enough to put that fucking shit away. Watch longer form things that require focus and engagement. Listen to podcasts and audiobooks. Read books. DO ANYTHING BUT CONSUME SHORT FORM CONTENT IN AN UNSTRUCTURED WAY.
If you MUST consume it (I'm sure people will be like 'but my classmates' or 'but my own channel'.... etc), do it in a siloed and structured way. 30 minutes between x time and x time on x day. Focus on it. Don't eat and do it. Watch each short form video to completion. Engage critically with the content. ANd never watch them first thing in the morning or last thing at night.
PLEASE. From a gambling professional, short form videos ping your SAME circuitry and you will fuck up your life and your brain so badly if you don't put up guardrails for yourself.
its not even shipping its just posting what they did
