a rly funny part in chretien de troyes' lancelot knight of the cart is when lancelot goes into like a little clearing where some peasants are hanging out playing games and stuff and they all stop what theyr doing to say 'look at this guy he sucks he's an absolute menace to society because he rode on a cart' like he killed the entire vibe and everyone was so pissed off abt him even being here. lancelot chud of the cart
Merlin is very suspicious in the Vulgate yo. I think he set the Uther-Igraine thing up. He convinced Uther to suddenly permanently hold his court in Cardoel, convinced him to set up three special tables there with one special void chair, and then convinced Uther to just "Trust me on this if you love me very much" while he frkn goes MIA for those entire 2-3 weeks that the dukes and their wives had to attend Uther's court in Cardoel.
And out of nowhere, Uther, who have been devoted to his brother and Merlin for his whole life, suddenly is irrationally in love with the wife of his duke?!?!?
and then at the height of Uther's love-madness, Merlin just reappears with a convenient solution???
MERLIN: Uther is too in love with me, I need to make him straight even if it's out of character. It's for the good of everybody.

I love all med lit but nothing, not even the vulgate, holds up to the nuances of characterization in Malory
Le Morte d' Artur is a great and fun Arthurian Work and reading it is fine.
I do think the funniest thing about the BBC Merlin as a show is that in actual terms of the role of Merlin in Arthurian mythos he really has like 1 core important thing he does and that's help Uther conceive Arthur, so by moving him back to be the same age as Arthur the show cuts his like one actual mythological role in the story.
Broke: Arthur only liked Guinevere because she was attractive
Woke: Arthur only wanted Guinevere because Lancelot wanted her, and he wanted any part of Lancelot he could have
Bespoke: Arthur was Aroace and everyone thought Guinevere was beautiful, so he thought it made sense for the King to be with her. Plus, he needed a wife anyway. So he married her to go along with social convention rather than because he actually wanted her.
