Somewhere in America, a Howard Johnson Motor Lodge sits untouched.

Behind a chain link fence, down an overgrown driveway, beyond the plywood covered doors, each room is fully furnished and stuck in time. Many of the original midcentury features remain, including the distinct HOJO light fixtures, headboards and wall dividers.

If anything - Lazy is a symptom of something. Something else. Something biologically different. Something that can be disabling. Something real.

As a neurodivergent elder, I've been accused of Laziness off & on throughout my life.

"You are capable of so much but . . ."

"Your past work shows incredible insight but this is just . . ."

"This place is a mess, why can't you keep it up . . ."

I (we) have a detailed understanding of our modern culture's expectations of productivity, social status, personal environment. I know when I am not conforming. We experience shame at our inability to move through those steps required to maintain cultural expectations. And being labeled Lazy does not help anyone accomplish anything.

Ok, I did not know there were bivalves that created spinnable fiber.

I certainly did not have "Free-diving grandmother harvesting, spinning, and weaving fiber from clams" on my Bingo card today. But I am delighted!

Neither quadruped nor bast fiber - byssus is something special.

The half-circles are called zaï! They're a traditional farming practice in the Sahel desert, and their introduction + reintroduction can be largely credited to Yacouba Sawadogo, the man linked above! He reintroduced and innovated on the zaï on his own farm in the 1980s, and did extensive outreach (along with scientist Mathieu Ouédraogo) to encourage other farmers to adopt them as well.

He also promoted the use of cordons pierreux, which are basically just lines of rocks to reduce erosion, preserve sediments, and increase water absorption.
