Called a senate committee member's office. I was very nervous but it wasn't so bad!
Here's a few tips:
The office that I called allowed me to listen to my voicemail a couple times before sending it. I could even re-record my message a few times. Don't know how it is for other offices, but this one had that option.
It helps to have a script with all the info you need. So be specific about what bills you're calling about. Give the date of the markup. Etc.
Keep in mind what your senator stands for. Their political party, the reason they support/oppose age verification, etc. Lead with that.
If you have a big script and you're planning to talk to a person, keep a version that's super short, in case you need to do voicemail.
For the voicemail, time yourself rehearsing the script. Use a stopwatch to see if you can say your piece within 1 - 2 minutes
Personally, I feel so much stronger after that call and I feel proud of myself for taking that action. I hope this can be some encouragement to those who are nervous
Reminder that we have ONE MORE DAY before the markup! So if you want to call, today's the day. Good luck! You can do it! <3

Tomorrow Wednesday the 5th, the Senate Commerce Committee will markup 5 bills.
The SCREEN Act - An explicit age verification bill for the entire internet - and the senate version of KOSA with the duty of care portion are the most notable, amongst the others. This is not a package, but individual bills.
You know what to do.
We need calls driven to the Senate Commerce Committee members NOW. You can find them here: <https://www.commerce.senate.gov/about/members/>
OR
use this list:
If you need a call script, either use [BadInternetBills](https://www.badinternetbills.com/) or spend some time writing your own.
““Hi there, My name is (your name) and I am calling to oppose multiple harmful internet bills. I oppose all bills that infringe upon teenagers’ constitutional right to free speech on the internet and enable government policing of online resources. If you truly care about young people’s experience on the internet, you should pass comprehensive data privacy legislation and oppose KOSA, SCREEN Act, and other age-gating restrictions on social media. Any kids safety package that includes KOSA, online ID checks, and AI preemption is a betrayal to young people everywhere.””
The SCREEN Act failed to pass out of committee today!!
Thousands of you called, good job!! Your voice matters! 🩷 Be happy with me today. This is a huge win!
KOSA and the KIDS Act advance to the Senate, but we can fend them off too. Remember KOSA has a conflicting version in the Senate. There's a lot of contention over these bills. Call your senators!
If they do not actually care about kids after they're born, what makes you think they care enough about them to try and pass laws about internet 'safety' and 'censorship'?

A city in my state just ended its contract, took down its flock cameras, and banned them from operating in city limits or being used for law enforcement.
The Senate Commerce Committee voted to advance KOSA in the markup. The committee's approved version keeps the controversial duty of care provision intact, setting up a major legislative clash with the House of Representatives.
GOOD NEWS:
The Screen Act did not survive the markup! 🎊 (Update: @cofa said it will get a revote! This is ridiculous! I hope it gets shot down again!)
You can read more information on Politico or watch the video on the Senate Commerce Committee site! It's only an hour it was very short! I was surprised.
In the article from Politico/Markup Marsha Blackburn (R) (She is for this bill) said this:
“The Senate cannot and will not accept the version that the House passed earlier. It is toothless, and it is a very pale imitation of the Senate version, and therefore, it is a pale imitation of big tech accountability,” Blackburn said during the committee markup.
(Marsha and crew for these laws GO GET DUNKED ON IN THE SENATE ! Also, this woman looks and sounds like such a Karen literally look up a picture of her. She looks like she calls the cops on her neighbors for having a bbq.😂)
Anyway, from what I watched, this is going to be a HUGE fight in the Senate. This thing is all over the place it's awful to even listen, too! I would LOVE to see them get laughed out of there!

Hey, do you like reading fics on Ao3? Do you like being able to talk about being a part of a minority group online? Do you like being able to log into stuff without providing your ID to a random third party?
Well, they're trying to take your ability to do that away!!
If you haven't heard, they're trying to push for the KOSA (Kids Online Safety Act) bill in the USA, which will basically ban kids from using the internet unless they want to give up personal information, amongst other things. They claim it's to protect the children from seeing harmful material, but that's a big load of horseshit - if they truly cared about the kids, they would improve parental locks and the safety of websites designed for them, instead of forcefully censoring the whole internet.
This is a plan to enact censorship on one of the only places that still hasn't been fully choked by it.
I know petitions don't do that much, so if you're in the USA, PLEASE contact your representatives - either trough an email or a phone call, and PLEASE don't stop periodically doing so until they're annoyed enough to vote against the bill.
And if you can't do that, or aren't in the USA, PLEASE AT LEAST SIGN THIS PETITION!!! IT TAKES LESS THAN A MINUTE AND YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO SIGN INTO ANYWHERE TO DO IT!!!
Stop KOSA: Protect Free Speech, Privacy, and Digital Freedom
And also, please share this around. This is extremely important. If it doesn't fit on your blog, do what I did and make a sideblog for stuff like this. Thank you.
quick reminder for those in the US to contact your state lawmakers/representatives and voice your opposition to KOSA/the KIDS act! they reached a bipartisan deal on 06/22/2026, and it could pass house as early as next week, so now would be the time act!
not only is KOSA a trojan horse for the government to collect as much data and have as much surveillance over us as possible, but it also will most assuredly be used for mass-censorship purposes, too. they do not want to protect kids, they want to harvest your info and ban everything they deem inappropriate.
it's failed to pass due to pushback before, we can stop it from passing again. either go to house.gov to contact your state rep (here's some call scripts so you know exactly what to say), otherwise badinternetbills.com and stopKOSA.com will help walk you through the process.
update for anyone who hasn't seen at this point: the KIDS act did, in fact, pass house (267-117 vote, 47 not voting, here's a list of who voted what).
good news is, it still has to go through senate, and senate is not for this version of the KIDS act. it has also both stalled and failed to pass senate before.
bad news is, senate wants a harsher version of the KIDS act to pass (wanting to require age verification at the device and OS levels, for example), and some senators are very open to negotiations with the house just to push the bill through.
no specific date has been set for a vote yet, but senate will be back in session on july 13th.
I decided to make a post with plenty of petitions against the surveillance of the Internet from plenty of different places. Don't hesitate to reblog with petitions I didn't put, be they from your country or not. Let's make a long chain of action.

Learn about the EU Chat Control proposal and contact your representatives to protect digital privacy and encryption.
As of the first of August, the script isn't updated so I'm providing with a new script based on the script present on Chat Control and the words of one of the petitions (don't worry I got the autorisation of the latter) that you can send during the month of August:
(Beginning of script)
Dear member of the European Parliament,
I am writing to urge you to oppose all the regulations that will permanently allow the mass indiscriminate scanning of all European's messages especially "Chat Control 2.0" for numerous reasons:
1. It destroys the privacy of 450 millions of European citizens. This isn't targeted scanning, an IA will have access to all the private texts and all the photos any citizen will send to their family, to their friends, to anyone.
2. The IA is unreliable at best. It has already been known for flagging vacation photos and discussions between teenagers, the very people this measure is meant to protect, and sending those to the authorities.
3. It doesn't protect the children. Quite the contrary, if they know their every words are being read and potentially sent to the authorities, they might seize talking about taboo topics like rape.
Worst, if they don't know about sexual harassment, how can they even defend themselves against it. It is impossible to defend people by making them ignorant.
4. It would flood the authorities with false positives and drown them in mountains of conversations and photos that are irrelevant to child rape.
5. It wouldn't work. The pedocriminals don't use the sites where honest people go. They will simply continue their practices unbothered on insecure platforms and therefore be unaffected by this measure.
6. The non-permanent measure has been passed in an anti-democratic way with the measure being a rewrite of a law rejected by the Parliament, treated as a second reading (so only a majority of MEPs could stop it), just before summer break. This wasn't a fair vote and agreeing to a permanent regulation would show that democracy isn't an important value anymore.
For all those reasons, we need to fight back and we need to defend real measures against child abusers, we have to push back against surveillance measures that will affect everyone, especially the children and future adults.
This fight starts with you as our shield against these unfair, ineffective and dangerous measures that will do more harm than good.
Yours sincerely,
[Your name]

As you can see we are not alone in fighting back everywhere against measures that go against our privacy. I am not alone and neither are you.
Weekly reminder to call your Senators. They are still negotiating and the July 29th date stills seems to be the goal for a mark-up even though it hasn't been confirmed yet. I think the fact the House, Senate, and White House seem to be on separate pages is a good thing, and we need to take advantage of it.

BEWARE OF PEOPLE WHO DM YOU ABOUT TRYING TO GET YOU TO TAKE A COMMISSION FROM THEM.
If you're a normal artist who not a scam artist, do not pester people into considering taking you up for a commission. I had someone try to do this to me and thankfully I looked closely at things to see that it looks too much like a scam to be legit. Like your official website on your payment account is something that's not the artist's art.
To that person, who seems to have multiple art accounts, who might be an actual human artist, I'm sorry. I have to protect myself and you were looking sketchy.
