deriding things as performative is anti third space

im sitting on a patio at my favorite cafe rn and im hand stitching them hem of a dress im working on. and i can see why someone would say im being performative by working on something like this in a public space. but frankly theres no element of that. i just want to work somewhere that isnt my apartment. i want to be in public, i wanna chat with strangers, i wanna see the world. it’s nice to hang out somewhere that isnt my home!

what i mean is when you say people are being performative you discourage them from doing shit they love in public. and thats no way to foster the world we want to see.

The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.

I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

the fact that they took a (let's be real) mid musical where basically nothing happens and infused it with so much meaning and significance for the queer community with barely any changes to the songs just by casting trans & femme POC in the roles.....Grizabella is a homeless older black queen dressed in rags pleading to be loved again --- the young black boy who secretly gives her a shiny new dress wears overalls and a flower crown to purposely evoke Marsha P Johnson --- McAvity steals designer outfits in big trash bags to gift to the drag ball contestants because wealth is so far out of reach for them --- when the cops raid the venue, old Deuteronomy steps forward to be taken instead of any of the younger people - and he's played by an 80 year old HIV survivor (Andre de Shields) who we see zip tied and pulled away off-stage --- a cat has 3 names and one of them is a name only the cat knows and never will tell --- i'm going to be pissed off about this for a while!!!
