Cat Johnston — The Flowerbeast (cloth, paper, wood, epoxy clay, 2021)
We need more scary infinite variants of manmade environments like the Infinite IKEA or the Backrooms.
May I suggest, The Lot:
I'm sorry to disappoint you but this is a real parking lot. I didn't edit it.
Check out the lot-to-building ratio in any large American sports stadium
Some lots are so big they have bus services specifially inside it. The lots are broken into sections and buses go around to their sections at a set amount of times before the start of something and drive people to the main building.
The societies of lost people inside The Lot would probably operate something like that to locate and pick up new arrivals and bring them over to one of the major settlements.
In the Infinite Ikea or Backrooms you can convince yourself there's gonna be a door round the next corner or behind that wall.
But despite it being completely open, there is no hope of escape from The Lot. Whereever you look it's just more cars from horizon to horizon.
Sheesh, man, that's
a lot

May Book Reviews: Palaces of the Crow by Ray Nayler
One of my anticipated new releases for this year. In Palaces of the Crow, four young people shelter deep in the Lithuanian forest during the worst of World War II. As war rages around them, they must depend on their own wilderness skills and the help of the curiously intelligent crows that live in the forest to survive.
Nayler has done the octopus book and the mammoth book to great effect, and in this novel, he moves on to the crow book. Unlike his previous novels, Palaces of the Crow has a solidly historical setting and doesn't venture far into the realm of the speculative, outside the slightly more intelligent crows. This book is also more interested in character interiority than Nayler's previous novels. Rather than broad concepts, it's focused tightly on four people's struggle to survive: Neriya, daughter of a Jewish doctor; Czeslaw, an underage soldier cut off from the Red Army; Kezia, a Roma girl who escaped the massacre of her family; and a young boy who can't speak. The setting is confined to one Lithuanian forest far from the broad historical sweep of death camps or armies. But the story is all the more vivid for the claustrophobia of the setting. All of our protagonists know that every faction that moves through the woods, from actual Nazis to the Red Army to Lithuanian peasants, would happily shoot them and leave them dead in an unmarked grave. And meanwhile, the harsh winters and increasingly scarce game can kill them just as easily...
A survival story of brutal clarity. I think the shift to more character focused historical fiction has served Nayler well. Here, the light SF elements serve to illustrate his thematic points about interconnectedness and survival, but do not become a major part of the plot. Recommended.
awww the like button turns into a rainbow when you press it! that's so cute...hey staff what's with all the trans women you keep nuking?
i think we should be ridiculing them more for this. you don't get to try and go all "queer website" when your staff likes to go on nuking sprees targeting the trans fem users
would be remiss not to mention that the rainbow notably straight up just removed the trans flag colors from it. like they’re gone. it’s the progress flag minus the trans flag colors.
that’s not the whole flag, now is it
hey staff what the fuck
hey staff don't you think you're being too on-the-nose
hey staff, so why is this post labeled as mature just because the phrases "trans fem"/"trans woman" are in it

We just uploaded all 6 issues of Volume 9 of On Our Backs to the Internet Archive! We've been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to digitize a large collection of issues and have been slowly working through what we have, and we're hoping to upload more before long, and we're so excited to make more issues accessible to people online again!
If you know anything about the magazine's history since it was discontinued, you know there's been a lot of fighting over censorship and who has the right to access these essential pieces of S/M dyke culture. We'd love to post these and have no problem preserving access to them over time, but we want to plan for the possibility of censorship, so we want to ask for your help.
Download the files to these issues, and any other issue you can find (the rest of the publicly available issues we're aware of are included in our pinned post), save the file to an external hard drive, post it as a separate upload in other archives or anywhere you know of to share files like these. Make art from the scans, share screenshots on social media, show your friends. We'd love a link to help people find our archive and our page to support our work and see what else we do, but the important thing is that we get these scans to as many places as possible so it's impossible to completely wipe them off the internet.
Leather is an inherently anti-assimilationist queer subculture, something we need very badly these days. On Our Backs is probably the biggest set of cultural materials we have, and it'll be gone if we don't protect it.
