sorry like i have to talk about the hayden and shane friendship because it’s founded on the facts that 1) shane is drawn to hayden’s straight white mediocrity, his conformity and ability to be good at hockey but not great and be okay with his life as a medium player and not be obsessed with his legacy because he hasn’t ever been challenged to justify his existence. he lives without anything to prove. his obliviousness and blandness and inattentiveness and mediocrity is the point of it all. 2) shane does think he’s better than hayden. shane KNOWS he’s better than hayden. shane is fascinated by and envies but also deeply pities hayden, who doesn’t even know he’s a failure. that whole aquarium scene shane is like… detached not just in a closeted way, but like there is a joke that only he is in on. his “swear jar” comment is SO quietly demeaning. he’s mocking hayden. he doesn’t even know he’s doing it but he doesn’t respect that man at all, not really.
so the friendship is based on the fact that in some way both parties think the other man is beneath them. hayden is trying to take on a paternal older brother role because he thinks shane is awkward and lonely and in need of straight male guidance, and in that guidance he never made any space to actually get to know shane because he’s so busy trying to show shane how to be a regular man. and shane is going along with it because all he’s ever wanted is to be a regular man but also, god he can’t imagine anything more pathetic. and so the cracks start to show once shane starts bucking against hayden’s guidance because shane doesn’t WANT to be like hayden. shane doesn’t LIKE hayden. shane has never liked hayden, and hayden has never liked shane, that was never what the relationship was about.
anyways this is why in 2024 they have a friendship ending blowup fight inside a cinnabon.
Some of y'all won't like this but I think people fundamentally misunderstand the "you really think that far ahead Hollander?" scene and it leads to misreading Shane's entire character. He says it himself: "I do. About this."
Shane isn't planning out every detail of his day ten years in the future. He isn't out here reading the instruction manual of his microwave, he isn't making excel spread sheets on every little detail or pouring over the settings on his washing machine. He hopes to still be playing hockey, he hopes to still be with Ilya. He will do everything he can to bring about that future. If it isn't about those two things, he's not really that bothered.
Shane is a jock who has spent his whole life building towards becoming the best NHL player in the league. He moved out of his parent's house as a teenager, after he secured an NHL salary. He has a team of people who organise his schedule. He has an interior designer. He has a stylist. He definitely has a cleaner, a trainer, a nutritionist. He gets his meal prepped meals delivered and only has to worry about heating them up.
Like, I get that neurotic planner Shane is a fun fandom trope that I, myself, often enjoy and engage with but I do think it's rooted in a misunderstanding.

listen, the sheer fucking balls to the wall bravery shane puts out by saying “you feel it too, don’t you?” is actually insane because he phrases it like a question but it’s basically a statement. he knows ilya feels it too. this is just to give him a little grace.

also its important to me that shane Knew he was gay the whole time, it was this Thing itches in the back of his brain, something he couldn't look at head on or really think about. bc admitting it was like giving up. but its not that he didn't Know. shane hollander didn't have to have rose tell him hes gay for him to be like "oh huh really i hadn't noticed" bc he Knew. and you can see it so clearly on his face in that scene how he knew. how thinking about it scares him, how Really looking at this part of himself feels impossible. but again shanes not just completely unselfaware, he knows this about himself he just Hopes he can make it work. that it doesnt really matter. he likes rose Enough, he likes girls Enough, it can be Enough
