Ironically it’s Hugo, the one with arguably the worst parental dynamic in the group, who first points it out like hey… haven’t heard you talk about a single healthy interaction with your dad. Maybe look into that

if vat7k were real and i was writing episodes there would be a “varigo having to be roommates for a while” episode which would include how hugo is the kind of person who dresses up really nice all the time not necessarily in a formal way but this man refuses to look casual he will not just go somewhere in jeans and a t-shirt no, he MUST “be dressed for the occasion, goggles, it’s all about making an impression that you are someone well put together” but then, one day disaster strikes, and he’s just wearing varian sweater or smth, and varian is pissed, because that’s theft, but also “huh, i’ve never seen him just normal before” and the audience knows he’s in depression hoodie mode, cause it was some shit with donella, and he messed up with a mission and now feels like a bit of a failure, and he (begrudgingly) tells var about this (minus the donella bit), there’s a feelings jam and hugo becomes more comfortable with letting himself appear more casual in varian’s presence/room private, but still likes wearing makeup and fancy outfits because he’s an icon

Rapunzel gives Varian a frying pan before he leaves for his 7K journey. And he beats Hugo with it at least once.
