When you stay in a hotel room, do you unpack your suitcase into the provided closet and dresser?
always
sometimes (explain in tags if desired)
never
never been in a hotel room/bald/etc
So we went to dinner tonight (with our six year old) and we sat down and the woman behind me very dramatically moved her chair because I guess I was crowding her to be next to her husband and then spent the next 45 minutes talking about how she went to a barbecue and told her sibling that the fact that they only had one child was child abuse because only children only turn up to be selfish, weird assholes with no social skills. She and her husband proceeded to talk and it was clear that they were child-free Disney adults.
I think we know who the assholes are here?
Wednesday was rough!
I took the afternoon off to take our daughter to the dentist - she had been complaining about pain, so that was the earliest I could get after we got back from Wisconsin. So, I picked her up from summer camp to bring her in and she has an abscess and they will need to pull the tooth after a course of antibiotics. The filling she got last year has also dislodged (they barely got it on and said it probably wouldn't last), so they want to put her under and do a bunch of work. I had to put a $350 down payment for the procedure.
Then, since I had my primary care appointment at 3:15 so I couldn't bring her back to camp, we went school supply shopping. That was another $100 (but she does have a new, cute, but actually very sturdy backpack).
Then I had to bring her to my appointment (which was fine because I wasn't due for a pap at least). I got my pneumonia vaccine and the first dose of the shingles vaccine (yah, turning 50!). They took 45 minutes between seeing the doctor and bringing the vaccines in, so that was fun.
I have never had a reaction to a vaccine (other than a sore arm), but that night was ROUGH - alternating chills and sweats, super thirsty, very sore arm. I actually took a nap the next morning and felt off all day. Today I think I'm finally over it.
Husband has a work trip coming up next month and he just found out that because we are a small airport city and where he is going is small airport, he has to make two connections. Eww.

nasa is using a 3D world graphic for the solar eclipse thingy today where germany is still devided in east and west adjfglkafdhgadfg. buddies, it's been almost 40 years.
So I showed this to a physicist and they were like "Oh! Yes! It's a figure from Fred Espenak's very old paper where he did a bunch of eclipse graphics! I've been looking at these my entire internet life, basically, for every solar eclipse! They called him Mr. Eclipse. He just passed away recently 🥺"
Anyway apparently Mr. Eclipse made 5000 years' worth of solar eclipse graphics, which you can find the simpler versions of here
So now instead of laughing at NASA for their outdated graphics I'm emotional about Mr. Eclipse and his hard work
Last year my freshman one credit seminar on "evaluating primary and secondary sources" didn't get enough students enrolled to run, but this year I have a full roster and the majors really suit my class plan!
For example, I have a section on evaluating scientific citations (perfect for those public health majors!) and I was considering inviting the new director of our University's "cold case" project, which I think the criminal justice majors would love. We'll also be doing a lot about evaluating AI, which I think the business majors will like (they have a cybersecurity concentration, but they can't declare that until sophomore year).
At it's core the course is supposed to introduce them to being students here, so we'll also have lots of field trips and extra credit assignments to attend events. The final project will be a short research paper on what it was like to be a student in "x" year using the archive's collection of yearbooks and student handbooks. I think I might even include in the prompt something about "how would a student from "x" year benefitted from a campus resource we have studied this semester?"
Just finished Haven by Emma Donoghue and even though she's one of my favorite authors and the premise of this sounded right up my alley, it was not for me. Also, way too much graphic animal death.
I do pretty well with vaccines - no reactions to the COVID vaccine for example - but yesterday I had my yearly physical and now that I'm 50 I'm eligible for pneumonia and shingles, so I got them.
Last night was rough! Alternating chills and sweats. I ended up taking the morning off and napping.
Obviously, still glad I got them, but just a heads up to others, especially if you are prone to side effects, you might want to plan them when you can take some time off.
People say that Iceland is one of the safest places in the world, but nothing prepared me for the fact that we literally only saw one police car - and it was helping a disabled vehicle.
Like, we literally found a driver's license on the beach and thought we should turn it into a police station, but could not find a single one when we searched google maps.

[Husband looking out car window very seriously]
Is everything OK?
Oh, yeah, I just thought those might be Kelvin-Helmholtz clouds but no such luck.
I've been married to my husband for 12 years and I just found out that he only eats one Tums at a time?!
Whelp. Got home from 10 days in Iceland, spent two weeks at home, drove to Wisconsin for a week, first day back... book a trip to Arizona for October school break. (To be fair, I had enough Southwest points to buy the tickets outright with them and we'll be staying with the in laws.)
Daughter will just want to do the pool, but we've been out there enough times now that I'm starting a list of things I want to do instead of going to Cave Creek or Sedona for the millionth time. The in laws will have both their cars there since they are giving up the apartment in Wisconsin, so we could even plan a day of just us three doing actual hiking/driving further for something cool.
We'll never know because I'm sure the CDC isn't allowed to collect data anymore, but my purely anecdotal take is that I think more people are smoking cigarettes (like the actual death sticks). I also blame vaping.
Husband and I were out for drinks on a patio the other night and a table next to us was clearly on a date but he looked twice her age. At one point they looked really serious and were holding each other's hands and she was saying "it'll just be really sad when I start dating someone else because that's inevitable." So, an affair?

I think the only thing grosser than vapers on restaurant patios is vapers who share a vape on restaurant patios.
Feels like a bad idea maybe
