Her son is a thief, yeah, she gives him some jobs, but considering what we know she isn’t some scary bad big criminal. I mean Quirin’s son was a terrorist, so Hugo being a thief isn’t THAT bad…
You know what kind of the father was Quirin, how desperate for his approval and attention Varian was at his 14, so… uh, not the father of the year definitely. Don seems cold, but loving, so…

back to rereading “canon” vat7k notes and thinking about how much I used to criminal-boss-slash-adoptive-mother-Donella through that wasn’t even “canon”. All we know about her that she was a researcher once and know she is back to trials. All we know about her and Hugo is said by Kay: “Donella and her gang offered protection more than anything…so he (Hugo) offers most of his work to her first. Including his sneakier services.”
What does her gang do exactly? Why kind of work Hugo does for her except to join Varian? Since when they work together? Okay, “protection” definitely can be interpreted as giving Hugo some kind of… home? So being a mother figure, even basically an adoptive mother, even a genuinely good mom can be viewed as an offer of protection.
But why we see Don as DANGEROUS criminal boss through only thing we know she wanted was a science journal so she could keep the world save?

I believe, Donella is a good person, just a tough and cold looking woman, but with a kind and loving heart. Whatever she and her gang do that can’t be really that bad.
