if  gabriel's  being  honest,  he'd  probably  do  his  job  for  the  rest  of  his  life  if  he  could,  surrounded  by  books  and  minimal  social  interaction.  he  willfully  ignores  the  voice  infiltrating  the  music  from  his  cheap  headphones,  hoping  it  isn't  directed  at  him  (  despite  the  library  basically  being  tumbleweed  levels  of  empty  )  but  he  eventually  whips  his  head  around  when  he  feels  a  tap  on  his  shoulder.  “  what?  ”  gabriel  spits,  staring  at  them  like  they'd  interrupted  something  important.

for  what  it's  worth  ----  teagan  tries.  he  tries  so  much  to  only  little  success.   the  library  is  a  place  of  quiet,  of  peace.  and  teagan  is  neither  of  those  things.  it's  like  letting  an  elephant  into  a  teashop,  or  a  hyperactive  dog  into  a  crowded  place.  after  picking  up  his  already  made  mess  (  though  there's  still  pieces  left  behind,  no  wonder  his  coworkers  hate  him  beyond  his  mouth  )  ,  teagan  wanders  over  to  the  mouth.  motor  mouthing  for  nothing  when  gabriel  speaks  up.  yeah,  that  tracks.  “i  was  just  seeing  what  you  were  doing  —  y'look  focused.  and  in  pain.”

determined to maintain her routine despite the recent terror sweeping town, femme heads out for her usual solo night run. moonlight filters through the trees as she pushes forward, path eerily silent but for the sound of footsteps behind her. the creeping sensation of being followed sets her nerves on edge. she dives behind a tree and holds her breath, pulse quickening with every rustle in the brush. as a shadow approaches, she springs from her hiding spot with the grace of a caffeinated squirrel and tackles the figure she believes to be her pursuer. “ what the—- ” to her shock, she finds herself on top of an equally perplexed local. “ are you nuts ? i could have hurt you ! ” she snaps as if she hadn't just body-slammed a fellow runner, and disentangles herself from the other, brushing off the dirt from her clothes.

she's  not  much  of  a  walker,  self  admittedly.  but  deizha  needs  something  to  do  that  isn't  talk  about  the  murder  of  a  girl  —  everywhere  she  goes,  it's  like  a  true  crime  podcast  on  it's  highest  volume.  no  breaks,  no  ads,  nothing  –  just  talk  talk  talk.  all  consuming.  all  too  much.  doesn't  quite  understand  how  others  aren't  hitting  themselves  in  the  head  from  thinking  about  it  too  much. so,  she  does  what  makes  the  most  sense  in  this  case:  get  away  from  the  noise.  headphones  in,  feet  on  the  trail,  left  to  her  own  devices  —  or  so  she  thought.  there's  an  ‘oof’  as  back  meets  the  ground,  head  nearly  knocking  itself  out  of  it's  place  on  her  neck  thanks  to  the  other.  “what  the  actual  fuck?”  disbelief,  bewildered,  what  have  you  —  deizha  resists  the  urge  to  start  hitting  in  retaliation.  “i  was  walking!”  a  bit  too  close,  and  a  bit  too  spooky,  though  not  like  she'd  ever  admit  fault  as  such.  “you  spend  all  your  time  attacking  innocent  people,  or  is  today  my  special  day?” 

she's  not  thinking  ----  shopping  in  a  crowded  store  only  makes  her  anxiety  set  the  rest  of  her  body  into  numb  mode,  auto  pilot.  maybe  she  should  get  out  of  her  own  head  in  spaces  like  this.  “sorry  –  ”  though  in  the  checkout  lane,  there's  not  much  elsewhere  for  her  to  go.  darla  sighs  and  tries  to  relax  her  shoulders.  “you  can  go  in  front  of  me,  if  it'd  make  you  feel  better.”

“i'm  sorry,  i'm  sorry,”  still  miss  giggles  –  darla  does  her  best  to  compose  herself.  she  feels  a  pang  of  guilt  for  laughing  ..  but  it  still  looks  dorky,  if  nothing  just  a  little  interesting.  not  what  she'd  expect.  “i  didn't  mean  to  make  it  sound  like  that.  i  laugh  when  i'm  nervous.”  which  is  true!  but  also  kind  of  a  lie,  in  this  instance.  “i  don't,  but  i'm  making  a  mental  note  to  never  suggest  him  to  anyone.  just  in  case.”  tilt  of  her  head,  quizzically.  “think  you  can  karen  your  way  into  a  refund?”

he's  grading  absolutely  terrible  essays  from  the  poor  kids  who  attended  summer  school,  their  final  grades  needing  to  be  turned  in  before  the  first  day  ----  which  is  coming  up  quicker,  though  slightly  slowed,  thanks  to  the  town  happenings.  addison  isn't  sure  if  he's  thankful  or  not.  he's  scribbling  something  along  the  lines  of  is  this  english?  when  the  other  speaks,  eyes  slowly  lifting  from  the  paper.  “you  gonna  share  with  the  class,  or  am  i  going  to  have  to  bank  heist  my  way  into  wherever  you  put  that  file?”

MAIA REFICCO in ONE FAST MOVE

she  listens  as  the  other  all  but  barks  the  order  —  deizha  taking  a  sip  of  her  drink,  always  unable  to  resist  what  seems  to  be  a  squabble  ..  or,  at  the  very  least,  hot  pissed  off  women.  hand  held  up  as  halle  speaks,  silently  thanking  god  or  whoever  is  above  someone  else  is  tired  of  listening  to  the  nonstop  chatter  about  the  girl.  tragic,  yes,  but  can  we  get  a  new  ice  breaker  please?  “thank  god  –  i'm  pretty  sure  the  only  thing  these  people  can  talk  about  is  …  that.”  death,  for  lack  of  better  words,  though  with  the  others  annoyance,  she  leaves  it  open.  a  wave  of  her  hand.  “y'all  got  whiskey  sours?”

a  singular  nod  of  his  head.  if  she  was  at  home,  he  wasn't  going  to  push  ----  though  it  does  spring  forth  ideas  that  others  he  cared  about  weren't.  mental  note  pushed  into  the  file  bine  before  he  full  on  spirals,  as  teagan  is  known  to  do  in  times  of  stress.  a  sigh.  “it's  just  —  it's  just  a  one  off  thing,  isn't  it?”  asks  a  bit,  like  she  holds  all  the  answers  to  his  questions,  even  if  they  both  know  that's  not  true.  semblance  of  a  peaceful  life  returning,  and  his  heart  pings  with  guilt  as  he  remembers  abigail.  “i  don't  run  that  fast  –  i  need  to  get  in  shape.  just  in  case.”

being  out  at  night  wasn't  usual  for  her  ----  even  in  a  city  full  of  people,  darla  would  rather  hunker  down.  instead,  she's  restless.  it's  still  different.  as  much  as  she  doesn't  want  to  admit  she  misses  los  angeles,  there's  a  pang  in  the  pit  of  her  stomach  of  longing  for  normalcy,  even  if  it  was  abnormal  for  most  of  the  population.  she's  sitting  with  a  drink  (  a  gas  station  slurpee,  thank  you,  long  since  melted  into  some  disgusting  goo  rather  than  anything  edible  )  when  blonde  speaks  up.  own  eyes  blearily,  but  not  enough  to  send  her  home.  “are  you  okay?”

he  doesn't  know  what  to  say  ----  the  poor  family  is  his  first  immediate  thought.  the  second  is  almost  relief,  in  a  selfish  kind  of  way.  he  wouldn't  have  known  what  to  do  with  himself  if  it  was  one  of  his  kids,  or  worse,  his  partner.  there  hadn't  been  much  actual  death  in  his  life  (  close  calls,  don't  count,  addison  reminds  himself  —  though  the  idea  of  his  fathers  head  on  a  platter  for  someone  else  is  still  a  constant  fear,  decades  later  )  and  while  it  may  not  help,  he's  read  some  books.  watched  some  videos.  anything  else  to  not  flounder  when  speaking  to  his  kids  about  it.  “i've  been  ..  okay.”  it's  a  lot  more  final  than  he'd  like,  though  no  other  way  around  it.  he  knew  abigail.  there  was  still  daggers  in  his  heart,  but  nothing  could  compare  to  the  whittakers  tragedy.  “i  don't  –  you  use  it.”  truthfully,  he  kind  of  just  wants  to  sit  in  silence  about  it.  but,  alas.  “you  seem  …  on  edge.”

she  can’t  stifle  a  laugh  ----  unlike  her,  considering  the  whole  professionalism  thing.  drilled  in  to  her  to  be  kind,  courteous  and  respectful  to  everyone  she  meets,  no  question.  but  darla  laughs  anyway.  “it’s  just  ----  it’s  not  what  i  expected,  is  all.  it’s  giving  …  i  dunno.  it’s  not  bad,  though!  who  did  it?”

“you  think?”  a  brow  raises  this  time,  confused.  he'd  hope  she'd  been  at  home  ----  otherwise  …  ?   “that  makes  sense.  was  hopin'  you  weren't  walkin'  ‘round,  getting  into  trouble.”  protective,  a  bit.  but  don’t  ask  him  about  all  that.  thoughts  aside,  teagan  thinks.  the  cogs  are  turning  in  his  head,  as  if  working  hard,  to  figure  out  what  exactly  this  could  mean  for.  well.  everyone.  “do  you  think  -  think  that  like.  we  should  be  scared?”

" i don't think i look a mma fighter, " her tone was soft as dark hues glanced down at herself. there was no way anyone would ever believe that nova would be a fighter. " where would i get pepper spray from ? " the dark haired woman had never thought about getting a canister before so she had absolutely no idea where she would acquire herself one or a few. at the other's next words, nova let out a soft sigh before nodding her head, " you're right. i should just keep living life as i was before. "

“yeah,  i  didn't  think  so.”  anyone  with  eyes  to  see  could  tell  just  by  looking  at  the  kid  —  in  the  end,  deizha  hopes,  it  won't  matter.  it's  a  one  off  thing.  no  harm  (  kind  of,  if  we're  not  counting  the  girl  …  )  ,  no  foul  (  still  not  counting  the  girl  )  .  “y'ever  heard  of  amazon?  pretty  sure  you  could  get  it  there.  or  specialty  stores,  or  maybe.  i  know  some  targets  sell  them."  a  shrug.  she  ordered  hers  online  a  long  time  ago.  no  offense  to  nova,  she  won't  be  hand  -  holding  ordering  on  amazon.  “don't  let  this  guy  scare  you.  it's  probably  personal  for  the  family,  or  a  grudge.” 

he  tries  to  think  about  where,  exactly,  and  it  doesn’t  take  more  than  a  minute  to  recollect:  “pretty  sure  i  was  sleeping.”  not  the  most  exciting  thing.  “i  found  something,  and  like,  you  know  when  you  start  shit  and  you  keep  spiraling?  yeah  —  one’a  those.  these  people  don’t  know  how  to  code  their  shit,  or  use  like,  ai  to  fix  their  java.  it’s  crazy.”  a  bit  overdramatic  ..  but  hey,  they  could  use  a  bit  of  lightening  up.  “where  were  you?”  an  eyebrow  raises  at  the  question,  as  if  pressing  for  details. 

nova could not help but give her a disbelieving look. she knew that the other woman knew that it was not like the bogeyman but the younger woman was not going to call the other out on it. instead, nova simply nodded her head so it seemed that she believed the other's words. " pepper spray ? no. do you think i should buy some ? "

a  soft  snort  out  of  her  nose.  “well  —  unless  you're  a  trained  mma  fighter  …”  she  leads  on,  as  if  nova  would  actually  be  one.  head  shakes,  pondering  how  to  respond.  “personally?  i  would  –  but  i  would  anyway,  murders  or  not.  better  to  be  safe  than  sorry,  yeah?”  tries  to  be  empathetic.  it's  not  coming  across  that  way.  “seriously.  they're  just  trying  to  scare  people  ..  or  make  a  point.  don't  let  them  see  you  freak  out.”  makes  an  easy  target,  but  deizha  keeps  her  lips  shut  on  that.
