I have no idea what to do with this information
thereâs been a huge outpouring of love for carrie fisher over the past few days that, quite rightly, isnât only focused on her work and the iconic character that she played, but who she was as a person and the strength she inspired in people.Â
it makes me sad that iâve only seen posts about debbie reynolds that celebrate her for being carrie fisherâs mother, and an actress of hollywoodâs golden age.Â
while those are totally great and valid reasons to appreciate her, (and understandable â she was of a much different generation and most of us are less familiar with her) i want to talk about how debbie was also an incredible woman in her own right.
debbie reynolds was a survivor of childhood abuse. she was a mental health advocate for most of her life. in 1955 she became a founding member of the thalians â an organization dedicated to mental health causes â which she led for almost 60 years.Â
she was a valuable and fierce ally to the lgbt community. she hosted AIDs benefits years before reagan publicly acknowledged the disease. she bearded for gay men to protect them from homophobia and discrimination that would prevent them from getting roles.
she was a strong, compassionate woman who, on top of raising her own two children with no help from their father, raised the three children of her second husband by his late ex-wife, even after he gambled away all of her money and left her flat broke.
so hereâs to debbie reynolds. her legacy â like her daughterâs â is more than just who she was on camera. iâm full of gratitude. the world is better place for all that she left behind.Â
1. Let people you love go if they need it. Doing what is best for a person even if it breaks you is what loving someone really is. 2. Forgive people who make valid apologies. Really forgive them. It will help both of you. 3. Not everyone deserves a second chance. Learn who to trust again and who to move on from. 4. Donât exercise. Do recreational activity. Know that one is about punishing your body for not being naturally what society deems perfect, and the other is about enjoying something that coincidentally involves moving around. 5. Never deny yourself when it comes to food. Eating is not a sin and should never be associated with guilt, greed, or gluttony. 6. Eating is wonderful, delicious, joyous, experimental, strengthening, nourishing, and sociable. 7. Donât regret any choices that you made. It was exactly what you wanted at that time and your decision would never have been any different. If it turned out badly, use the experience to learn from your mistakes, move forward, and not make them again in the future. 8. Be open and honest, always. Communicate what you are feeling to other people. It makes you look strong, not weak, and it will make your relationships deeper and more solid. 9. Write letters to people that deserve it. Write letters of love. Write letters of thanks. They will be treasured. 10. Read a lot. Always have a book by your bed. It will expand your imagination, teach you new things, and act as a place you can escape to when life is difficult. 11. Listen to people who are sad, and really hear them. Make an effort to genuinely understand them and empathise with the way they are feeling. Help them in ways you would like to be helped. 12. Honour your body. Respond to what it is telling you, always. If it needs fuel, eat. If it is tired, rest. Appreciate your body for keeping you alive even when you treated it like the enemy. 13. If you love someone, tell them. You might not get another opportunity, and you should never let yourself live with a âwhat ifâ. 14. Stand up for yourself, and stand up for others. Do not be someone who stays silent in the face of injustice. 15. Travel whenever you can. It is important, exciting, invaluable, and liberating, to explore the world. 16. Live life for yourself. Learn to say yes, and learn to say no. Donât ever forget that you are worth a hell of a lot. Cut people out of your life who donât appreciate that, and hold those close that do.
16 Things That I learnt in the Last Two Years (via thisistheanswertonothing)
me, walking into 2017 with my eyes closed: im one with the force and the force is with me im one with the force and the force is with me im one with the force and the force is with me im one with the force and the force is
What Iâve learned in 2016 1. Friendship is a matter of convenience. It can be true and beautiful and fun and full of love until she moves to another city for college and finds 10 more people she can âconnectâ with. 2. You donât have to pursue a boring degree for a boring job. Yes, your passion is for things that make it harder to fetch money but you have one life. Do you really want to spend it doing something you donât absolutely love? If youâre passionate about something, no matter what, you will excel, you will thrive. Thatâs the key to real success. Not some statistics stating the most lucrative jobs and industries. 3. You will exercise. You will drink more water. You will eat healthier. Not because youâre not beautiful the way you are but because your body deserves to be treated better. It literally has carries you around, has your back and actually has your heart from that first moment to your very last. 4. If they are a bitch to others what makes you think they wonât be one to you when the time comes? How people treat others is always a tell tale of how they will treat you. Pay attention. Itâs better than feeling like a fool 6 years later. 5. Cook your own meals sometimes. You know just the amount of oil, salt and ingredients you want. You may not be a masterchef but you know what your stomach wants. 6. Surround yourself with happiness, inspiration and positivity and a very major part of that is social media. Who you follow is so important. Social media is supposed to be a happy and safe place for you. Choose the right people and the right works to fill your feeds because eventually those fill your mind and heart. 7. Nature is all healing. Itâs the one thing in the beautiful presence of which even the most talkative person like you feels the need to shut up. Nature requires no words. Itâs completeness is something to learn from. 8. Your parents live a life apart from being your parents. They have moments youâre not a part of, moments you donât even know. They have not only had a life before you but also a life with you being there that you donât know about. Thatâs okay and thatâs not something to be mad about. 9. People will leave you. Always. Some in days, some in months. There are those who take decades and then there are those who never leave in physical form but withdraw all meaning and thatâs when you must leave. But just because people leave their stay doesnât become any less wonderful or important. 10. Sometimes the only person you need at 3 am is yourself. Give yourself mode credit. You can always help yourself. It may just take a little longer and be a little harder but you donât need another person to help you. You are enough. You are strong. You will never disappoint. 11. Music of all type is necessary. Songs that make you cry and the ones that make you think and then those that make you only want to dance. 12. Draw. Everyone is an artist. And your drawings may look like those of a middle school kid but isnât your joy just like hers? 13. Read more books. Yes, youâre older now and busier too but âbusy â is an excuse and you know it. Find time for something that saved you. Find time for something that you love. 14. Lipstick is life. People may stare at you and they may get intimidated by certain shades but thatâs okay, one smile and they will be at peace. 15. Click more selfies and click them without any shame. If youâre happy, if you look at yourself and feel like capturing that one moment where you feel good about yourself - go fucking ahead. Capture all your happiness, beauty and goofy-ness. But remember, they are for you and not your social media. 16. Thereâs literally no way you can help someone without helping yourself. And they may give you nothing in return and they may be ungrateful but who cares? They arenât half the person you are and you can shrug it off and move on but remember unlike you, Karma never forgets. Also, karma is only a bitch if you are. The darkest moment is the very moment before sunrise. Itâs a fact. So 2016 may have been your darkest time but that only means the sunlight of happiness and inspiration and love awaits you in 2017.
