what’s your process for representing different sexualities/identities/genders in your work?

Genuinely, I just throw as many queers into the story as possible and I don’t make it a big deal.

The reason is because, largely, I’ve only ever had friend groups full of other queer people. We have our discussions about how queerness has effected our lives. We’re activists and care about our rights and we’ll talk about queerness sometimes.

But mostly we’re just gay and trans in whatever ways we are and that’s that.

Similarly, I don’t write stories about the struggles my characters go through as a result of being queer. I write about people who happen to be queer and the things going on in their lives. Inevitably, queerness comes up as a topic of discussion. Characters may encounter a struggle because of their queerness or discuss their identities and sexualities. But generally they got other stuff going on and they just happen to be gay or bi or genderfluid or trans or nonbinary or asexual or what have you.

I do at times write stories specifically about being queer and have that be the focus. But I also think it’s important to have stories of characters going on adventures or experiencing weird fantasy things and learning lessons, where all the normal story things happen, and the characters just also happen to be queer.

Funniest thing about Quincy shooting the bat and breaking the window is that he confesses that he's been shooting every goddamn bat he's seen over the past few days.

There's a missing part of this novel that's just the notes of a very concerned conservationist and local police records detailing how they teamed up to find out who's been shooting all these bats in the middle of the night.
