i love the symbolism of ilya's/irina's cross necklace because of how tangible and omnipresent it is. when he's wearing it openly we notice it, but when it's hidden we also notice it. it's deeply symbolic of irina's memory but also of the defining tragedy of ilya's life. he bears the weight of being one of, presumably, few living people remaining who remember her. irina is the albatross that ilya wears around his neck. but cutting that albatross down is the one thing that ilya cannot imagine doing, so he has to make peace with it. to live with it and to continue living with it.

came to the realization that the first time the cross necklace appears on screen in full is in the hotel gym flint of desire scene. you can see it under his world juniors hockey uniform and presumably it's under his clothing at the mlh draft, etc. (irina's memory is present with ilya through all of it). but it is first visible when he has a unique moment of connection with shane. thinking thoughts.
