so im at the part where omega is helping out with the baby since sohi is kinda passed out, right after the argument with hunter (just for some context)

i have to be honest, the whole argument kinda pissed me off. hunter is doing his JOB. as a leader, he takes on the responsibility of making the final decision and ensuring his squad's safety and wellbeing. you can argue that hunter may make decisions without consulting the others but honestly? i feel like it is a rare occurrence. hunter takes it upon himself to ask the others what they think. hunter is the face of the decision, but his squad his backing him. he doesn't choose what to do alone.

phee is literally the reason so much went wrong. she even says something along the lines of "aw man, hunter is never gonna let me live this down." so not only does she recognize she made a mistake and was in the wrong, she doesn't apologize for her stubborn thinking or her choices. she constantly blames hunter's behavior on him being a soldier and they're not at war anymore and whatever. UHM??? NEWSFLASH LADY!!! they are CLONES 😭 they were born and bred for WAR. it is LITERALLY the only thing they have ever known. and if they're constantly on the run or engaging in missions, then yeah, they need to keep their soldier instincts intact. if they didn't, none of them would be able to get out of any situations alive.

additionally, phee not taking accountability goes farther. she doesn't apologize and then says that hunter went along with the plan. omfg girl. he tried to stop the plan at every single turn, every single bend, every single corner. he pushed back EVERY TIME. BECAUSE HE KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG. and just because he "went along with it" doesn't mean he wanted to. but his love for his family outweighs any decision. that is why he continued being the best soldier he could be and try to keep everyone safe despite the clearly wrong decisions being made. because he loves them. this is what phee doesn't understand and chalks up to his ego that he isn't being listened to

i get tech, wrecker, and omega wanting to voice their opinions more. it's a valid take, and i understand if these three are the ones to bring up the concern that hunter is making decisions for them rather than with them. phee doesn't have the right to say shit 💀 i feel like tech pointing out that crosshair leaving was because of hunter was unfair. while it may be true to some extent (ahem, the argument on that snow planet after crosshair defects), it wasn't actually up to hunter. crosshair chose to leave and then chose to stay. the rest of the batch was well within their right to go back after crosshair if they wanted to. but everyone knew that it wasn't safe, especially not after they had omega to take care of.

I love Phee’s character, and Hunter’s, (in the show) but I think the book totally mishandled them both. There’s enough internal conflict between both characters to have a decent level of tension without having to exaggerate and manufacture tension.

Phee’s nature is to be bold and take risks. Hunter’s is to step back, evaluate, limit risks. They’re natural foils in the wild, and many episodes from the series highlight this. But the book blows this completely out of proportion.

I didn’t like the way Hunter was handled in the book at all. Bro got shade thrown at him from literally every other character. Omega makes sense, cause she’s always had a mind of her own. But Tech and Wrecker are more likely to stand by Hunter and his decisions. Seeing them all rag on him for the very thing he’s there to do was nothing short of infuriating.

Like you said, he’s the leader. It’s literally his job. He should be able to judge a situation and decide whether or not it’s too dangerous. And be respected by those who follow him. Not to mention, he’s biologically equipped to do exactly that, in ways that no one else is.

All in all, not the best writing of these two characters. But…oh well. There’s always fanfiction.

But not getting to see him really processing that and like…being human about it…was distressing. We only get to see him being a leader and trying to deliver the news to Omega after she wakes up. Some emotion bleeds through. On his face. In his voice. But not enough.

It’s just…we get to see Wrecker all torn up about it, which makes sense, absolutely.

But Hunter? Hunter, who carries the weight of responsibility on his shoulders as the commanding officer for the squad. Hunter, who is already dealing with regret from having to part ways with Crosshair. Hunter, who always tries his best to make the right decisions even when the options he has to work with are crap. You can’t just brush over his internal conflict after Tech has literally just died right then and there.

But the show does. All we have really is this moment, and a few others here and there (crumbs), and fan speculation.

I get it. Hunter is a strong, unbreakable soldier. Yes, but he’s also human. I wanted to see more of that. That humanity.
