Hello, I would like to know more about the alcohol differences in men and women that you mentioned in your tags on the trans research post!
Oh yeah no problem. Alcohol tolerance is known to vary between men and women. Current academic research supports that (on average) men have higher alcohol tolerances than women. If you have ever taken a "safe drinking" course or similar, this statistic will be cited. However, I have never seen one go into why that difference exists. I will explain why below the cut.
Let us start with the basics. There are four factors that affect how alcohol affects your body.
1. Body Size
2. Body Fat
3. Body Water
4. Alcohol Dehydrogenase
The first factor, Body Size, is simple. The bigger you are, the more alcohol you can tolerate, as it has to be spread more. Height is the most important factor here. On average, men are taller (and larger) than women, which contributes to the previously mentioned statistic. Transitioning later in life does not directly change this factor, as your height will be relatively unchanged.
The second factor, Body Fat, is how much fat your body has. Alcohol is absorbed more slowly by fat cells compared to muscle and other cells. This means with a higher percentage of body fat, alcohol will remain in your bloodstream longer — thus keeping you drunk longer. If you transition via estrogen, your alcohol tolerance will decrease as estrogen increases your body fat percentage. The opposite is true if transitioning via testosterone, as your body fat percentage will decrease.
The third factor, Body Water, is the amount of water in your body. The more water in your body, the more the alcohol gets diluted. Individuals with a higher percentage of body water will have higher alcohol tolerances. Typically, body fat is inversely related to body water. So as you transition, your body water will decrease (estrogen) or increase (testosterone), changing your tolerance.
The last factor, Alcohol Dehydrogenase, is your body's ability to break down alcohol. It is an enzyme your liver produces and will remove alcohol from your bloodstream. The more of it you are able to produce, the higher your tolerance. Alcohol dehydrogenase is a genetic factor that is not fully understood, but is not affected by transitioning. It is genetic, but may be affected by epigenetic (environmental) factors such as drinking habits. If you already have a high production of this enzyme, your tolerance will be less affected by your transition.
TL;DR: transitioning will change your alcohol tolerance. Anyone telling you otherwise is being negligent. Transitioning via estrogen will decrease your tolerance. Transitioning via testosterone will increase it.

there used to be /tons/ of trans women of color on this site. janet mock was on here. jamie berrout started her mini publishing house and published twoc she found on here. there were artistic and activist collaborations between twoc that started on tumblr. now there are incredibly few of us and those of us who are here face immense hatred and isolation. i miss my friends. even the twoc fandom girls i used to talk to aren't on here and sucks horrifically.
