Every time you go in a public place and something ISN’T disgusting it’s because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground it’s because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.
indeed...
Trying to identify someone's time zone by the hours that they're active on Tumblr is commiting the logical fallacy of assuming that anyone on here has a regular sleep schedule
I really am sick of the “We killed this person/pointed a gun at them because they were trying to run us over.” justification from ICE and cops. Get out of the fucking way. Lol. Motorists hit bicyclists and pedestrians all the time while they’re minding their own goddamn business and they don’t pull a gun on the driver. You’re standing in front of a car so you can shoot someone and justify it. You’re not minding your own goddamn business crossing the street, you’re looking for a reason to kill.
Being struck by a vehicle accounts for about 9% of officer fatalities on the job. Mind you, we don’t know how many cops were maliciously struck by eeeeeevil criminals, how many were run over by other cops and how many were genuine accidents. We do know cops are more than twice as likely to die crashing their own goddamn vehicles than being run over by someone else.

The polar opposite of corporate accounts trying to come across as hip and super friendly are the ones for libraries, aquariums, parks systems and the like, that are basically just trying to get people excited about learning and the wonder of history/science by posting things like this:
You know how much I would lose my mind if I was at an aquarium and turned a corner to see a wild ass heron staring at a fish tank

hello project moon fan. in front of you is heathcliff. above your head is a heavy anvil that will drop on you when you call or compare him to a dog. good luck
I sincerely don't understand why anyone would do such a thing. Heathcliff is such a well written character that it genuinely physically pains me to see him as anything lesser. His humanity is the biggest part of him.
He may have "dog-like" qualities but making him just that is such a misinterpretation and mega reduction of his character.
People say he's a dog then ends with a Full-Stop.
He's brash, sure. A bit hotheaded but I wouldn't call him SIMPLY a dog. He's a bloody alright bloke who, despite his anger issues, is one of the more dependable members of the cast. Beneath all the shouting is someone who genuinely cares about the people around him.
Heathcliff gets angry quickly, but he isn't directionless. He doesn't get angry for no reason. He gets angry when for example something tramples on his deeply held values, but those values are mixed with insecurity and trauma. Like... I don't remember where but both Don and Heathcliff getting an SP minus down on a choice if Dante leaves somebody dying somewhere. Or when he gets rightly furious when someone insults him or the LCB. He is a lot like Don in a way.
He is very steadfast on his values. He is completely resolute with what he says, blunt with good intentions, and does not see a need to dress up his words in flowers. Instead of speaking elegantly, he says exactly what he means in an effort to make sure he's understood. It makes him seem abrasive but he's very straightforward. If he doesn't like something, he says it. He also repeats many times that he will bring someone back from the brink no matter what, that he'll "beat some sense into 'em".
Even in Canto V and the S.E.A. Intervallo we see a lot of progression of his character. Heathcliff started out as heavily brash and iirc indifferent about the LCB, but after his talk with Verg in S.E.A. and the whole stuff that happened in 3, he actually shows a lot of traits that he has now. He tries to talk to Ish despite at that point hating her guts(? I think he did), actually tries to cares about and for Dante is his own way, and overall slowly tries to—if sometimes unsuccessfully—get to understand the other Sinners.
In Canto 6 Heathcliff in my eyes became even more likable than he was, and went from Top 3 to honestly my favourite character. He gets nervous going to meet Cathy, he tries to make himself look good, he reminisces, and he becomes... softer in my eyes. He cares. Sometimes a lot more than he gives off but he really fucking cares. After (or before I forgor) he distorts he trusts the other Sinners to beat some sense into him if he ever loses his way. His anger is tied in part due to shame. Canto VI especially shows that a lot of his rage comes from years of humiliation and internalized worthlessness. He isn't simply explosive by nature, he just has an incredibly raw wound that he never learned to process healthily. Anger is often the only emotion he feels comfortable expressing because that's the natural human thing to do. Scream when in pain.
Though what I'll say is that his anger isn't just ONLY a misunderstood form of love. Like I said before, his anger comes out when he is hurt, feels insulted, is insecure, or just had poor emotional regulation. He genuinely can be harsh. + His anger is understandable, not acceptable.
In Canto 7 he builds off the previous Canto very well. He really acts on his vow from 6 where he has a specific emotional understanding of what Don/Sancho is going through and is emotionally and completely locked in to bring Don back from the brink.
His emotional intelligence is also better than most people give him credit for. He's not socially graceful, but he's really perceptive. He notices when people are acting strangely, picks up on insincerity (even if sometimes a bit too late but that's funny), and often understands what motivates others even if he expresses it bluntly. And there's a distinction I'd like to make. Heathcliff is better at emotional perception than expression. He's the type of guy to say "Oi. Get a grip." while being completely and earnestly sincere.
What I like most is that his growth isn't that he becomes the epitome of kindness or whatever. He slowly learns to trust the people around him, trust their judgements, their actions, and himself with them. Like, Heathcliff having talks with Dante about Catherine is so impactful to me because like... man.
It also makes his calmer moments more meaningful because they don’t feel like KJH replaced him with a nicer version. A person like Heathcliff choosing patience, even briefly, feels like effort. It’s a conscious decision from someone whose instincts have always pushed him toward confrontation.
And honestly, I love the fact that the other Sinners can joke with him about it. They know he’s going to be rough around the edges, but they also know there’s more to him than that. They can tease him because there’s trust there.
@definitelynotdistorter guess who my favourite sinner is

it was super thick and dark and golden and bubbly so i took it off the heat. happy accident.
tastes delicious so good. idk what to do with it though
thank you for your recommendation! with brief consideration, it has been disregarded.
one argument you often see about fanfiction is that it's like 'training wheels' writing? like 'oh it's fine to do that while you're still learning, it's easier than coming up with your own ideas'. and I have to say I have just never agreed with that.
in my experience it's actually pretty common for newbie fanfiction writers to gravitate towards coming up with OCs rather than writing about the canon characters (hence the infamous Mary Sue); this suggests that many people find that 'easier' than attempting to write about pre-existing characters.
I would say that recreating the characterisation, mood and general vibes of an existing work of fiction is in fact a skill in and of itself that's acquired via practice. A common compliment delivered to fanfiction writers is how well they have captured the spirit of the original work. Inexperienced fanfiction writers fail to do this.
When creating an original character you can, ultimately, say anything about them and now it's canon bcos you created them and you said so. conversely, well, if you are covering a well known song and start playing the wrong notes people will notice immediately.
In addition: a lot of fanfiction, IMO, is in actuality a form of metafictional literary analysis. a story where two characters sit down and talk about their feelings about a canonical event? literary analysis, which is of course a skill. Sometimes fanfiction is bad bcos the writer is not good at interpreting texts.
finally I have made this point before but you never really see anyone suggesting that fictional works based on existing public domain texts are on 'easy mode'. is it 'easier' to write something based on a copyrighted work than a public domain work? Of course it isn't.
I know I said 'finally' but I forgot a point:
A major strength of the transformative work is its ability to create dramatic irony. If a fanfiction's emotional resonance is dependent on being familiar with the source material that's not necessarily a bad thing. sometimes it's a sign that the author has done a really skillful job of engaging with said source material.
I've said this before, but "fanfiction" is how storytelling worked for most of human history, and intellectual property law and the idea of characters being literally "owned" is new and weird.
When you hear a story about a Guy, wanting to tell a story about them is the most natural thing in the world. That's how mythology and folk tales happen.
IMO the idea of fanfiction being "bad" or "cringe" as an artform is related to how activities have to be profitable to be considered valuable, but further than that it is related to how "owning" is considered to be preferred over "caretaking" or "stewardship" where you do not own, you just participate
I believe ultimately it is an outgrowth of land ownership vs. land stewardship to be quite honest... a consequence of our culture
there's something so deeply dystopian to me how tech companies don't understand that a forced convenience is not a convenience at all. i'm sure autocorrect is helpful for many, but a function that forcibly changes my actual written words and punctuation is taking away my language. photo filters can be nice but i need to choose using them myself or else i have lost the ability to take the picture i want. i don't want a machine to draw or write for me. taking away the option for me to do things manually feels like violence!!!! all this talk of endless opportunity, why are you RESTRICTING me
disgustedly throws youtube autodubbing onto the pyre pile

learn to associate cleaning with pride instead of shame and your quality of life will improve in ways you can't even imagine btw
like I'm sympathetic, it's hard work, it takes some degree of mental organisation and physical capacity that is not equally accessible to every human being on earth. I know. but regardless of how much you can do and how often, you will get better results across the board if you can frame it as positive effort towards a better situation instead of perpetually self flagellating for having the sin of being a solid thing in physical space that steadily accumulates dirt no matter what just like everything else on earth
So one of the things that can apparently contribute to kidney issues in cats is if they eat too much dry food and don't drink enough water; cats are adapted to get a lot of their water from their food since they're originally desert animals, and might not get enough water if they don't eat wet food. Unfortunately, Dozy won't eat wet food no matter what; she categorically refuses to touch the stuff. So a few months ago, we were looking for ways to get Dozy more fluids, and my wife noticed at the pet store a cat drink--basically meat broth with some floaty bits in--that was low-protein and meant for cats with kidney issues. So we figured, worth a try, right?
Great news: she loved it. Super tasty apparently. Great success. Along with the kidney-sensitive treats we found, it was a nice way to supplement her diet. Unforseen long-term consequence though: she loved it so much she began demanding it throughout the day. Like, would come up to us and meow, and meow, and meow, and not stop, until we got up, went to the kitchen, and got her some cat drink.
And by doing so on demand, we have unfortunately created a monster: no matter what we are doing at home, Dozy knows that if she sits next to you and meows, 1) you know what she wants, and 2) you know that she will not stop until you get it for her now. And when you do get it, she gets extremely excited. She will bum rush the kitchen door as you enter. She will run around your feet as you open the can. She will let out the creakiest, crunchiest, most nails-on-the-chalkboard meow you've ever heard if she thinks you're not going fast enough.
I do not begrudge her this. It is gratifying to care for a creature whose most ardent desires are so simple that it is this easy to fulfill them. But I am a little sad, because I know in my heart that I have never loved any comestible as much as she loves this cat drink. She has a pleasure of a purity and intensity that I will never know.
[the creacher in question]
Nothing on earth could have prepared me for the fucking face of Dozy
