While a routine hunt leads Sam, Dean, and Castiel to Hawkins Indiana, they quickly join forces with The Party to help them defeat Vecna.

Not being strangers to supernatural bull shit, heaven, hell, and everything else in between, Team Freewill immediately believe the kids and offer their help. They’ve seen a thing or 2 and know a thing or 2 about pretty much everything, figuring out another dimension really can’t be that hard.

Sam, an insufferable know it all, human web page immediately befriends Dustin, their mutual appreciation for knowledge and understanding making them an ideal pair for research and strategizing. They join forces with Lucas as well, (because Lucas is a NERD and you can’t tell me he isn’t) together creating the final battle plan.

Dean, a misunderstood soldier who often thinks with his heart rather than with logic, immediately sees himself in Mike with the way he is fiercely protective over his friends. He sees a young boy who doesn’t know how to talk about his feelings, and who deals with them silently instead. Mike, who represses pretty much every emotion until he explodes. He makes it his mission to talk to Mike and get him to understand that life is too short and too fragile to not express how you feel. No matter how scary it is. Trying to convince himself its okay in the process.

Mike, who is at first put off by Dean’s banter and intrusive questions, eventually softens and opens up to him. He would never admit it but he thinks Dean is cool as shit. A real life paladin? Who fights off real life monsters? Who is brave, and fierce, and strong? He’s everything Mike wishes he could be. He admires Dean’s loyalty and love, realizing he is the heart of his party.

Castiel, immediately feeling the waves of hope, despair, pain, and longing emanating from Will makes it his own personal mission to protect him. How he is soft spoken, and gentle, and compassionate. He sees how Will always puts the needs of others before his own…He sees the way Will’s eyes linger on Mike, feels their tension and chemistry and can’t help but to sympathize with Will. He encourages him to love and to love fiercly. Being a celestial being himself, he explains love is the most important and beautiful emotion anyone could ever feel… no matter how painful it may seem.

Will who can’t explain why but trusts Castiel with his life. Sensing they share more similarities then differences, and not to mention his angelic powers? Sorta reminiscent of a wizard! He immediately clocks the chemistry between Dean and Castiel and wonders if it’s something more. If Castiel wants it to be more. He confides in Cas about his feelings for Mike and expresses how his biggest fear in life is losing Mike all together. Cas explains to him he understands, considering he literally fell from heaven just so he could be with Dean.

THENNNNN

Sam, Lucas, and Dustin all bitch and moan and complain about how TIRED they are about their friends pretending they aren’t in love with one another. Sam is all like “No way, they do that shared lingering look thing too?” And Lucas and Dustin are like “Dude we thought Mike and Will were the only 2 who literally constantly joined at the hip, you mean to tell us Dean and Cas have a personal space problem too?”

And so it turns into one giant plot… get Dean and Cas together while simultaneously getting Mike and Will together. While both pairs of boys have no idea what’s happening.

Bonus points because you can’t tell me Max, El, and Charlie wouldn’t all be geeking out together over how DUMB and oblivious these boys are. And Charlie would be such a NERD with El’s powers and find her so damn cool. On top of that, max and Charlie would continue to fight for el’s independence and help her become a bad ass woman like she was always meant to be.

Dean- a repressed bisexual man with copious amounts of trauma, who would die for his friends and wouldn’t hesitate to sacrifice himself, who is in love with his best friend, who pushes down his feelings by having meaningless hookups with women and running away from his problems because he doesn’t know how to talk about it…

Mike- a repressed bisexual boy also with copious amounts of trauma for his age, who would ALSO die for his friends, who is ALSO in love with his best friend, but has a horrible internalized homophobia and deals with it by continuing to date the first and only girl who shows interest in him but somehow can’t say the words “I love you”

Castiel- a literal angel who FELL FROM HEAVEN for the man he loved. Who’s north star and compass for his entire existence is his best friend, the only human who has ever made him FEEL something. The human who showed him peace, sacrifice, joy, despair, hope, LOVE. Who helped him become more than what he was. Who gave him purpose. The man who CHANGED him!!

Will- Whose favorite sound is Mike’s voice, the only thing that can save him from Vecna, or the upside down.. his tether to the real world. Who sacrifices his feelings every time if it meant the boy he loves can have a shot at peace and happiness. Who is in love with his best friend, his best friend who makes him feel “better for being different”.

I don't like the idea of queer kids being told that the best they can hope for is self acceptance and moving away from everyone they care about and finding love somewhere else.

Nancy says she’s “not that competitive anymore,” which is a lie and everyone knows it. She has simply evolved from openly terrifying teenage Nancy into adult Nancy who smiles very tightly while asking to “just clarify the rules really quick.” She is a ruthless Scrabble player, a deeply unpleasant Monopoly opponent, and absolutely cannot handle losing at Clue because, excuse you, she is literally an investigative journalist.

Jonathan, meanwhile, is quietly lethal at Trivial Pursuit in a way nobody sees coming until it’s too late. He’ll sit there all soft-spoken and unassuming, refilling people’s drinks, letting Nancy argue about whether someone’s answer was “technically close enough,” and then casually know the capital of Burkina Faso, the director of some obscure 1960s Italian film, and which Beatle played sitar on what song. Just completely devastating people with the energy of a man who spent his entire youth reading random library books because going out cost money. Nancy finds this both deeply attractive and infuriating because she does not love being beaten by him in front of witnesses. So game night always ends with her accusing him of “hoarding weird little facts specifically for this purpose,” and Jonathan, trying not to smile, saying, “Yeah, Nancy, I’ve been planning this since 1983.”

When the gang visits? Robin is banned from being on Nancy’s team because she asks too many questions without really listening to the answers.

Steve is banned from being the banker in Monopoly because he short changes everyone (and becomes incredibly indignant when anyone accuses him of cheating).

Max is so savage at Uno that getting anyone to play with her is like pulling teeth. She plays Draw Four cards with the cold, dead-eyed focus of someone seeking vengeance more than victory.

Lucas is the king of charades because he commits, he’s expressive, and he’s just practical enough to know embarrassment is temporary, but winning is forever. Max pretends not to be annoyed that Dustin is better at guessing on Lucas’ turns than she is.

They are ALL banned from playing Risk (especially Dustin because be becomes an unapologetic war lord).

I’ve decided El is still alive El’s go-to is always Scattergories, and she is weirdly, terrifyingly good at it. Years of quietly absorbing vocabulary, magazines, television, slang, newspaper headlines, and random pop culture references have made her a secret weapon. Everyone underestimates her exactly once.

Will is too good at Pictionary and everyone resents him for it. It’s not even fair. He’ll draw three lines and Mike will be like, “Oh, obviously that’s existential dread,” and somehow he’ll be right. Both of them always bring a D&D set and claim to have a short, quick campaign to get everyone to play (it’s never been shorter than four hours).

And they do not talk about Jenga. After the incident.

By the end of the night, Nancy is standing in their tiny New York kitchen, aggressively rinsing wine glasses, insisting she is not mad. Meanwhile Jonathan leans against the counter, smug in the gentlest possible way, because he knows two things with absolute certainty:

One, he won Trivial Pursuit.
