bumi & iroh: they get along personality-wise but iroh being the fire nation prince who led an invasion of the earth kingdom makes things just a little weird. they'll be hanging out all chill and joking around and then bumi will toss out a joke at iroh's expense and iroh will just have to take it (and to his credit, he does)

bumi & jeong jeong: they don't dislike each other but they also don't really get each other. bumi keeps trying to get jeong jeong to loosen up (bc the guy who rebeled against the fire nation should be a fun rule-breaker, right?) and jeong jeong doesn't want to loosen up

bumi & pakku: bumi thinks pakku is a boring stick in the mud and pakku thinks bumi should put on a shirt

bumi & piandao: everyone is always surprised at how they well they get along but underneath the different exteriors they're the same kind of eccentric genius. they don't hang out often but when they do Wacky Shenanigans ensue

iroh & jeong jeong: iroh understands jeong jeong's struggles and wants to help but jeong jeong finds it annoying when iroh pulls the "old wise master" voice on him bc they're like the same age and jeong jeong left the fire nation first. like don't act like you're so much wiser than me about being a fire nation dissident, i've been doing it longer! they're not on bad terms though. they're both tea snobs and jeong jeong appreciates having someone else do the firebending

iroh & pakku: when people talk about the white lotus as an old boys' club this is what they're talking about. pakku is not super trusting of the fire prince but he's also kind of insulated from the war. they have shared a misogynistic joke or two

iroh & piandao: piandao was the grand lotus who vouched for iroh when the rest doubted him - he understands having a change of heart about the war plus he's a strategic guy and knew iroh would be a great asset. unfortunately iroh is less aware of that second part and thinks piandao likes him more than he does. piandao likes him fine and they bond over parenting zuko but nonbender orphanage kid piandao will always have a bit of a chip on his shoulder about wealthy firebenders

jeong jeong & pakku: mutual loathing. pakku hates jeong jeong for being a colonizer and jeong jeong hates pakku for his sexist beliefs about waterbending healing

jeong jeong & piandao: gay divorce weird old man yaoi similar to iroh & jeong jeong, piandao gets what jeong jeong's going through and wants to help while jeong jeong is resistant. the difference is that he's less preachy and not a firebender so there's an actual chance jeong jeong will listen to him. jeong jeong is lowkey jealous of him being a nonbender

Well here is my deep dive analysis

☀️

Here’s what is known about how Katahara Metsudo “adopts” or selects his bodyguards in Kengan Ashura / Kenganverse, particularly how they’re raised / recruited, and what “adopt” means in this context. Bold some keywords / Info

The Bodyguards are Metsudo’s personal army: his protective force plus enforcers. There are 500+ members, divided into 11 squads, each with a captain. There is also a special unit (the Extermination Force) for top‐tier assignments - Hey Restudo and crew!

When people say Metsudo “adopts” a bodyguard, they're referring to how he gets them when they’re young (often orphans, homeless, or quite literally found and reported in Agito's case) and trains them to be part of his bodyguard Organization.

“Most of the Bodyguards were orphans, who were taken into Katahara Metsudo’s tutelage as children and trained to become fighters, with only the strongest being hired as Bodyguards.” from the Wiki.

While has never been stated what the minimum age Metsudo has taken in actually is on record, what I can assume that as long as they are able to communicate if they cannot speak fully then with body language, have shown to be able to fend for themselves, and has some spark of spirit and fight. The more wild like the more Intrigued Metsudo is. This does not mean that Metsudo adopts any and all children he may see I am sad to report (he really isn't a nice sweet man)

So the “adoption” isn’t always legal adoption necessarily, but more that Metsudo rescues orphans (or takes in youths without guardians), raises/trains them, and then the best among those become full bodyguards in his organization.

Now to be on the more realistic side here there are exceptions not all are orphans; some joined later (as adults) and still became bodyguards. Such as Omori being scouted from the outside.

Based off the details in the manga as well as what is added into the Kengan Ashura show when it comes to the involve of "What makes a bodygaurd" and how the get "hired"

I noted for main things:

Selection early in life: Many are orphans or kids with nothing; Metsudo brings them under his care.

Training & tutelage: They are trained rigorously as fighters. They probably undergo both physical combat training and discipline to serve as bodyguards (loyalty, hierarchy, etc.).

Proving themselves: Only the strongest or most capable are “hired” or elevated to the actual Bodyguards force. So there’s a sort of selection / elimination.

Ranks and special roles: Among the Bodyguards, there are ranks (squads, captains), special forces (Extermination Force), and some become “Fangs” of Metsudo (titled fighters/bodyguards with higher prestige).

Kanoh Agito - Metsudo discovered him, educated him, and “adopted” him, making him one of his Bodyguards the later on THEE Fang of Metsudo. His orphan background, brutal training, GU Ritual, as well as his heavy mental stats pre Kengan Omega makes him very strong and disciplined. We saw Agito's background in Omega he grew up as a child between China and Russia in the sewers eating rats, later to be first adopted by Tiger Niko /Niko Tokita (the same Niko as Setsuna). Not first being adopted by Metsudo.

☀️💍🍜Omori Masamichi - Omori is a bit of an exception: he was scouted from outside the Bodyguards’ ranks rather than being raised by Metsudo from childhood. He became the Fourth Fang of Metsudo and is his right-hand man. He was also champion in the Kengan Annihilation Tournament before (so he was already strong and well known) when he came into Metsudo’s services afterwards. Being a Kengan Annihilation Winner and his boss picking Metsudo to lead before joining Metsudo. Omori was in his late 20s when joining. Omori came into his organization with automatic High Rank and later his Fang then Right - Hand Man. Not just in the sense of actually being at his right but he is apart of the Dainippon Bank Business as well.

I want to into detail of his training for the younger orphans but I dont want to glaze him too too much... 🍜💍☀️

Takayama Minoru - He is one of Metsudo's orphans from his original start, he grew up in Metsudo's care from his early years. (Agito and Omori did not) He is one of Metsudo’s personal bodyguards (“left-hand man”) and later the Seventh Fang. Minoru since growing up with J and many of the other Captains of the squads, he’s very high up in social ranking. Before Agito came he was the highest ranking Orphan both in fighting as well as social expectations for the title of Fang.

Yoshioka - He was an assassin before joining Metsudo’s Bodyguards. He challenged Kanoh Agito for the Fang position (but lost, losing his left eye). He now wears an eyepatch. He became a captain in the Bodyguards. So he was already active, presumably adult, before joining. After his defeat, his personality changes – becomes more humble, more courteous. He hold no grudges towards Agito dispite Agito taking his eye, this makes Yoshioka have support with Agito when it came to the Fang and Kengan Matches.

From these cases we can see there are different “paths” for how someone becomes Metsudo’s Bodyguard (or even reaches “Fang” status). Some typical patterns.

Many of the Bodyguards are orphans, taken in young by Metsudo and trained from early on. Agito and Takayama are a prime example.

Some are brought in later, already having some fighting or assassinating experience (like Yoshioka).

Some are scouted from the outside entirely, never orphans under Metsudo’s care but recognized for fighting talent (Omori and even Sen).

After joining, there’s training and proving themselves: doing bodyguard duty, fighting, challenging for positions like “Fang” (which is a high rank among his bodyguards).

Advancement seems meritocratic (strength, skill, loyalty, performance) plus the ability to survive tough conditions / fights / challenges.

Only the strongest graduate into the Bodyguards. It’s described as a very selective, survival-of-the-fittest system. Out of the young Orphans not all of them have passed on to become Bodyguards. Though they have the chance to keep training and try again, still not all make it.

☀️SO what happens to the ones who do not make it into becoming a Bodyguard? My thoughts are,

Metsudo runs an enormous conglomerate or union if you will (the Katahara Group, Dainippon Bank, Kengan Association, The Bodyguards, used to be involved with the Kure Clan's upbringing with Eiroh Kure, etc etc etc), not just a little guardhouse, so it makes perfect sense that:

Top fraction = Bodyguards. squads, and Fangs.

Strong but not elite orphans = security teams, drivers / chauffeur, admin for the Bodyguards, or special agents for business partners.

Average = clerical staff, logistics, research, accounting, even household attendants.

It lines up with how wealthy power brokers in the series treat their retainers the “company” isn’t just fighters, it’s a full machine. Training orphans gives him a loyal workforce in every department, while reserving the elite slots for those who excel.

So in short those orphans who do not pass to become Elite titles still work for Metsudo at his many organizations and companies.

☀️One of the great reasons why The Three Crows are growing in popularity is because they are so qwirky (and hot like Omori's noodles). With this being said, I want to talk about how I see Metsudo's office workers.

They are mostly made up of highly skilled people from normal backgrounds however all of his high ranking office workers are in fact his Orphans that did not become his guards. They lead Metsudo's workers who are not apart of them.

The Senior Administrative Core

Vibe: Precise, patient, eerily calm

Usually older or long-serving orphans who grew up under Metsudo’s care but were placed the “brain over fists” route

Speaks with authority, move efficiently, and never waste words.

They manage scheduling, finances, and external communication directly between The Crows or Metsudo and then tell the rest of the offices / lower ranks with almost military precision.

Think: tea poured at exactly the right temperature, meetings that start exactly on time.

Personality traits: disciplined, loyal, quietly witty, observant, mother-hen-meets-soldier energy.

The Secretaries & Personal Aides

Vibe: Polished, subtly intimidating, emotionally intelligent

They have an uncanny sense of what Metsudo wants before he says it.

Fluent in multiple languages, capable of reading the room and manipulating small talk to protect his image.

Many were once trainees who didn’t pass combat trials but have steel-core confidence.

Personality traits: charming, sharp-tongued, unbreakable under pressure, terrifyingly competent.

The Research & Strategy Division

Vibe: Stoic analysts and quietly obsessive data types

They handle background checks, business intelligence, and historical archives.

Most are introverts who would rather deal with numbers or files than people.

Personality traits: hyper-focused, quietly competitive, detail-oriented, and fiercely proud of being “the mind of the house.”

☀️Overall Tone of the Office

Silent hierarchy = no shouting, no chaos, but you feel the tension of excellence.

Mutual respect = everyone knows they were chosen, raised, and shaped by Metsudo, so there’s deep loyalty and subtle competition.

Family under discipline = like monks in suits. The affection is there, but you earn it through precision and composure.

There are times where Metsudo will come into the offices with Omori and Takayama, and for a brief time Agito. The workers would be starstruck...as would I if I was apart of this...🍜💍🌞

It's the kind of atmosphere where silence says more than any dialogue could. When the guards escort Metsudo through the office, the entire building shifts. It’s not noisy. It’s not dramatic. It’s pressure. Those who were raised under him, even if they now push paper or balance meetings, know that rhythm. It’s the rhythm of command, of survival, of the man who turned orphans into solid conquers.

The Fang or Crows walk with quiet authority, eyes sharp, movements deliberate.

The younger guards are more tense, aware that the office is watching them.

When they finally see him, small, ancient, wrapped in silk and shadow the reaction isn’t awe in a loud way. He doesn’t have to speak. Sometimes he’ll offer the faintest nod to an old student behind the desk. Maybe someone who used to fetch tea during training years ago. That’s enough to make their entire week.

What I am thinking about now is, the academic system set in place. The housing structures. The differences between orphans who pass to go onto training first try, the orphans who have to try again, and the the adults who are scouted from outside

Man...if I worked for Metsudo..I'm telling you now! I'd probably be on Kengan Annihilation set up crew... Like the interviews for the fighters OR helping pick and set up the venue with contact with Metsudo. I work in Media and Advertisement right now so, I'd get a peek at Omori for sureeee HAAAA

I feel like one of the only captains / guards Omori really wouldnt interact with or really speak to his Misasa. Like he is in his own world and I dont think any words or compliments from Omori would mean to much to him other than a simple "heh thanks Omori" from Misasa but even that is kinda of shrugged off. Not because Misasa thinks he doesnt need it but simply Misasa is very nonchalant and goes with the wind. He can hold his own and is kind of in an odd positon not being an acutal bodyguards but extermination, the mentor and teacher to Retsudo, and then Fang.

And Omori doesnt mind that, he is still there but he can take that time he would give to Misasa for a break for himself or focus on the rest of the extermination squad. Dispite their personal distance relationship within their "family" there is Mandatory check ins and sparring for each quarter that Omori does. Under no circumstances will anyone who is a captain or in high status be allowed to miss these appointments with Omori even if you are sick or have a dare emergency, your life duty and priorities are for the master understood. But even those between Omori and Misasa are simply going over procedures and basic updates that they already know both as Fang and Left Crow while Omori smokes a cigar. "yup" ... "uh huh so". "I see" "yes I understand" with some small talk about young master Retsudo.

My own headcanon is that The Crows, Omori Takayama and Agito are not as close to Retsudo just because Retsudo wants it that way and as a young man with something to prove to both his own father Metusdo and to the rest of the Kengan Assoication they understand and respect Retsudo's choices.

Also to add onto this, Retsudo since he thinks so highly of Misasa because Misasa is his teacher and apart of his squad also tries to copy his "lone wolf" can stand on his own two feet but that sometimes leads to Retsudo not be taken to seriously or can led to Retsudo being out of a loop a little when it comes to his fathers business and the rest of the guards. While Misasa really can stand on his own two feet and also coexist within the guards world. Retsudo comes off as wanting to be strong and edgy...and young. He can be rather smaug at times about his own decisions that he has made on his own just to prove something. Doesnt mean he is looked down on, but it also doesnt add to his favor either. Retsudo want to take over the Kengan Association one day but he isnt quite suited for it though he wants to work towards that.

Omori also reports back to Metsudo about his new information and opinions on Retsudo. Metsudo then will call Retsudo for a lil drinks and chattt

I actually really want to get into Retsudo and Misasa because they both have odd poistion in Kengan as characters outside of everyone else like they used to have set roles and then got pushed into the water and left...even Omori replaced both of them in recent chapters and arcs

the up and coming ones seem to have their own places (I mean like a barracks/dormitory mansion) but what about the main ones? retsudos team? the three crows? wouldn't that leave Metsudo severely vulnerable at night if so? do one of them stay while the other two go home? do they still live in the mansion?

I HAVE SOOO many questions and the orphanage and stuff you went into makes u the most smart about this subject.

personally I like to believe they have rotating shifts and omori being the oldest stays with Metsudo most of the time. but agito is a contender.

(HC first time agito guarded Metsudo while he was asleep Metsudo had to wake up and tell agito to stop staring so intensely. it was so bad agito blinked one eye at a time to "stay vigilant")

We have only seen Metsudo's personal mansion three times. First is when Ryuki broke in to meet Metsudo and we got to see Nikaido has a new guard. Second, Takayama was getting his hand fixed and we saw Omori and Misasa in his garden area. Lastly, we got to see Retsudo's office when he was helping put a team together to Retrieve Ryuki from "The Inside" with Ohma Koga and...?? Ice King dude (I hope I remember to put his name in before I post this)

But that doesn't mean we cant come together to make more worldbuilding ☀️👏 I also added HCs for the women that work for Metusdo there are 500 plus men but only 3 women? They need some attention too!

Rotating Night Shifts (Your HC Makes Perfect Sense)

Your idea of rotating shifts is exactly how it would work. Even elite fighters need rest but Metsudo can’t afford to ever be unguarded. He has to much influence which means he has even more enemies . So, imagine a rotation like this:

One guard is on night watch (usually Agito or whoever Metsudo trusts most). They stand directly outside of his door, sometimes inside if there had been a public disturbance. Metsudo likes to test his luck and has been known to walk out of his room to meet the disturbance and they cannot risk anything happening.

One guard is on-call, lightly sleeping but armed and ready to respond. Their instincts are sharp enough to sense danger without the phone call though. This role requires speed and sharp intelligence. Sometimes jumping into the vents to get a better look at the target is required so only select guards are able to take this role.

Guard Teams are off-duty, either resting or handling outside assignments (shadow surveillance, intel gathering, etc.). These teams are always in groups of 3 or more. The schedule sheet for this role is always overflowing to requests.

That system keeps the compound secure 24/7 without exhausting anyone. It’s practical and consistent with how disciplined, militarized groups operate, especially in an empire like Metsudo’s.

Many guards are willing and are eager to go on security but it is Metsudo himself who is giving the orders to have everyone go on a shift. Half so they all stay strong and prepared. And half simply because Metsudo doesn't want to be bothered or feel bothered and limited at all. One thing about Metsudo is he isn't going to put himself in a cage, he needs that freedom.

I can also see him having "meetings" in his bedroom if he feels that the guards are getting too eager to protect his space or constantly being around. It's so they will get that social cue to leave this old man be.

When he feels he is being watched or surveillance in his own space then he will simply call for Omori. Omori is a seasoned grown man who understands the desire for freedom with Omori's outside worldly experience. He also knows that Omori is older so he too also wants his own space.

Now what I really liked about the Nikaido scene when Metsudo first met Ryuki are his stairs! They were massive so much so that 20 people lined up could stand together on one step. I think his steps could play a huge role in your Night Watch Headcanon because:

They’re a test, a statement, and a weapon all at once. So cool

Intimidation-by-Scale They are massive. The width allows 20 men to stand shoulder-to-shoulder. It makes every visitor feel small. Every step forces you to look up at Metsudo.

Visibility of Threats from the top landing. They can see everything anyone approaching has no cover. Guards line the stairs like statues assassins can’t sprint up without being exposed . It’s a perfect killzone.

Symbolic Ascent to anyone who climbs those steps! Because in a way they are submitting, acknowledging Metsudo’s height humbling themselves beneath him. Every business rival, fighter, and executive has to literally climb to reach him. It’s dominance!

Where the Bodyguards Live

You’re completely right it wouldn’t make sense for Metsudo to live alone with only distant security, considering how powerful (and old) he is, and how many enemies he’s made.

Elite guards (like the Three Crows, Retsudo’s team, and Agito) would almost certainly live within the Katahara compound itself, but not in the same living quarters as Metsudo. Think of it like this:

They have their own wing or annex, almost like a high-end barracks–villa hybrid that is private, but close enough to respond within seconds. They are also customized to the liking of each living group. Metsudo takes almost all requests they make for adding to their living areas. He is worried about the lack of roles though for entertainment.

Each of them would have personal quarters, training facilities, and a shared briefing.

hhmm, I would say that there's a difference between The Crow Living Courters and then another wing for Agito separately for when he is in his head after evolving like how we saw in Kengan after his fight with Gaolong. It contains three private suites, meant ONLY for Metsudo’s most trusted protectors.

Agito’s Quarters

Massive private suite (like a quiet, empty training temple)

Minimal but immaculate

Reinforced walls (he IS thee Fang sometimes you protect him from the building)

Steps away from Metsudo’s bedroom wing

Direct access to hidden hallways leading to emergency routes

Agito is the only guard with proximity so close it’s almost symbolic of Metsudo's shadow, even while sleeping. (I added this because of your HC)

Omori’s Quarters

He’s the oldest, Omori has also retired from Metsudo and is now working under assignments from Metsudo on a new personal contract.

He can stay in his own home, he does have his own home

But he has a reserved suite in the inner ring for multi-day assignments

Larger, more traditional Japanese styling

Full of books, calligraphy brushes, neatly folded clothes, a corner with sparring mats it's very “old warrior in quiet retirement” vibes

A place for him to rest between high-level operations

Omori’s suite is closer to Agito’s than to "The Crows." He is the icon for seniority. Old man...

Takayama is a Crow but he is also an orphan of Metsudo and is closer to the captain than the other two. While there are "The Crow Quarters" only Takayama really stays there and even then he is really occupying it he is out at work or around The Captains he grew up with.

The Crows are special! So not quite officers, not standard guards either. They’re elite executioners, which means their living situation is both communal and separate.

They share:

an isolated wing at the edge of the compound

three individual rooms arranged around a common living space

each room adapted to their personality / preferred weapons

a private gym optimized for agility, stealth, and assassination drills

reinforced soundproofing (because their training can get unhinged)

Their wing has a “do not disturb” aura. Most staff avoid it. You can feel their wings coming up when staff are simply walking past or around that area. Captains make up stories about their wing that adds onto the scary aura their hallway and door carries.

They’re trusted but also… dangerous.

Guard Barracks (Standard Forces)

2 guards per room, dorm-style but high quality

Full sized Bed

Weapons racks

Shared bathrooms

Centralized common room

“Night-rotation” sleeping schedules

A whiteboard of assignments updated every morning

They’re treated well, but the hierarchy is unmistakable.

They have a shared Kitchen similar to how we saw The Kure's gathering for a community meal once Ohma had been revealed to be alive. Lower ranking guard have to eat together. This was taken as a practice from the orphanage since most of them have all grown up together under Metsudo. From childhood to training they are expected to cook together, eat together, and clean together.

Rank does play a part in this however, Captains are not required to eat with their squads but most do for bonding and meetings.

I don't think that Retsudo and Sayaka growing up lived with Metsudo, while they were under his care they still went to school so they couldn't have lived in his mansion but they lived with those who were employed by Metsudo like a nanny or guard of their own.

The "Agito Night Watch" Headcanon

That detail of Agito blinking one eye at a time to “stay vigilant” is perfect! Literally gold. I can almost picture it: Metsudo, in his silk sleepwear, cracked open one eye in the middle of the night, only to see Agito standing statue-still at the foot of his bed, face lit faintly by moonlight. But that overshadow covering his face is even worse. Soul haunting even.

Metsudo: “Agito… stop staring. You’re supposed to guard me, not haunt me.” Agito: “Sir, I am guarding. Both eyes must not close.” Metsudo: “For God’s sake, at least blink together.”

It’s unintentionally hilarious, but it also fits their bond too! Metsudo’s amusement at Agito’s rigid devotion, and Agito’s complete inability to turn it off. Agito’s first night on duty, learning the difference between guarding and hovering. Maybe Retsudo or Omori even has to quietly explain the etiquette later to him. Of course a book would be even better to help Agito understand.

THE WOMEN’S WING (Private, Secure, and Shared Among All Three)

Metsudo assigns them their own micro-residence inside the compound.

Think of it as a mini-apartment complex built into the estate compact but high-quality.

Private Rooms (3)

Each woman gets her own:

queen-size bed

desk, storage, weapons safe

personal bathroom

small sitting nook

door with reinforced locks (same as captain-level rooms)

These rooms reflect their personality and rank. We have Mei who is a part of the new edition Special Forces with Nikaido. We have Nawa who is the 6th squad's Captain. Then formerly Metsudo had Kushiba who was a spy assigned by Metsudo to keep an eye on Nogi while Nogi assigned her to keep an eye out on Yamashita.

Shared Space

All three share:

Large kitchen (high-end, well-lit, always spotless because the secretary is the organized one)

Cozy common room (sofa, table, soft lighting, a TV they barely use)

Small laundry space

Tiny balcony overlooking the inner garden

Fitness alcove (punching bag, free weights)

It feels more like a classy off-duty safehouse rather than a barracks.

So I am also going to give them Headcanons as well!

Kushiba Rin cooks or bakes as a stress relief after she comes back from an international traveling trip to find a fighter to join the association

Nawa meal preps like a soldier and gives her leftovers to share

Mei only eats drinks teas unless someone forces her to have a real meal

They gossip about male guards CONSTANTLY. Nawa and Mei never thought of themselves to actually chime in on the gossiping but they have the most to say as Kushiba giggles and agrees.

They complain about the compound's testosterone-filled chaos. They swear they can feel the walls shaking when the men's spare or toilet paper has been all used and they have no replacements.

Late-night tea and wine when one of them comes back from a mission

Nawa falls asleep on the couch with paperwork on her chest so Kushiba wakes her with gentle scolding

Mei sneaks in quietly after night watch, Nikaido's special forces often take on night watch near the entrances. She gets hugged whether she wants it or not when she comes in later than normal.

It’s warm, supportive, feminine, but still part of a dangerous, masculine world. They are outnumbered 500 to 3 goodness they have wildly different personalities! They work in different wings with different pressures. Lastly they all carry different kinds of strength

Their bonding becomes intimate, rare, and incredibly warm, the kind of closeness you only get when there are so few people who truly understand your world.

Let's not mistake anything though! They are properly treated and well respected when they walk down the hallways. They belong their and everyone knows and acknowledges them.

Off topic but halfway through drawing this a fatass spider crawled on my arm and scared the hell out of me. That didn't stop me from drawing though. The only thing that will stop me from drawing gay old men is myself.
