cuties🥺🥺
so iroh stops a guy in ba sing se from robbing him not by like, showing compassion towards someone from the city he once sieged as a powerful symbol of his personal transformation but just by making sad wet guilty-colonizer eyes at him until he feels bad and admits he's just hungry? booo
i just realized that this "letting him go bc he's just too sad and pathetic to harm" is exactly what i said about jeong jeong & jet and between jeong jeong defending himself from jet and iroh being so visibly broken up and miserable about his participation in the war it's like they've swapped. i thought it was weird how first season iroh was aiding zuko in his quest but it kinda fits with iroh only JUST now feeling guilty instead of having processed his guilt & made peace with it the way he seems to have in atla. we'll see how it develops obviously but tbh i'm not entirely mad at having a more tormented iroh. if anything it's kind of flattering as a jeong jeong fan that they've given his traits to a more major character

My impatient ass couldn’t wait to show this off. Is it my best work? No. Do I love it? Yes. Enjoy the nip.

imagine🤔🤔 you are a hardore jetko shipper 🤯🤯 and youve been excited 🥺🥺 about season 2 adapting your ship for years 😋😋😋 but then 🫣🫣 they fucking ERASE YOUR SHIPS ENTIRE PLOT
maybe there's still hope that jeong jeong will be in character. i mean maybe when you're being cornered by an angry mob and you realize you actually don't want to die (despite thinking the world would be better off without you) you start spouting off nonsense about how you're one of the good ones and don't deserve to die. idk. i just want them to bring back the self-loathing
that said. i feel like if i was begging for my life in front of a crowd of people from a nation that i'd once waged war against i would stay on the point of "i deserted to protect people like you" instead of going on about men and boys who died under my command. like why would they care i saw my soldiers die? they saw people die because of my soldiers. if i'm desperately trying to convince people i'm on their side i'm gonna talk about being on their side, not just share everything i've been through.
but this is less a problem with specifically natla and more just generally an issue with american "anti-war" texts, like it's always about how the soldiers of the imperial army felt about it, that they died and suffered, and not about the people who were the victims of that aggression. the writers just went for a standard "why a soldier grew jaded with the war" spiel instead of actually considering the situation he's in (facing down people who won't care about some parts of that) or how he was written originally (as part of an episode about realizing your capacity to cause harm to others)
Repping a particular niche in a fandom is a weird experience. Yes, I'm here and yes I'm part of things but the majority creates mainly for the popular fandom darling who I like but who doesn't live within my brain in any substantial capacity, which naturally distances me from most of my fandom peers and most common fandom-specific tropes. I'm running a roadside stand outside of the main discourse peddling my favorite side characters like they're the main ones. I am a scholar with only one school of literary criticism at my disposal and it's the one I made up. I am going to analyze and reinterpret this work of fiction from an angle exclusively focused on characters and a relationship no one else, least of all the original narrative itself, cares about. Who even knows what I'm talking about anymore, I've got 300 AUs about them. I'm sitting in a sandbox with my action figures. Enlightenment is often confused with madness
Sokka has 50+ tabs opened in his browser at any given time and yet knows the order of them all
count seems a little low tbh
he has 50+ tabs in one browser window. but he has multiple browser windows
natla jeong jeong being in ba sing se is mostly just "shove all the characters into one city" (e.g. mechanist and jet in omashu) but it also feels like one of those adaptational changes to fix a "plothole" that nobody actually thought was a plothole. like, if hiding in ba sing se was an option for fire nation dissidents with white lotus connections why didn't jeong jeong do that instead of squatting in the woods? plothole! and it's like well first off they hadn't fully established the white lotus lore by his episode (heck, they hadn't even nailed down water-healing yet) and second and most importantly: perhaps there is a reason that someone who feels like they're teetering on the edge between human and monster would choose not to live in a city where there are like. other people. maybe a person like that would like. isolate themselves. bc they think they're a threat to everyone around them

btw i'm not gonna use she/her pronouns for natla jeong jeong until i see some signs of egg. sometimes characters change gender in adaptation, just look at general fong
also re: being resolutely optimistic about future jeong jeong - the liberties taken with the plot of atla plus piandao being in this season means that there is a non-zero chance jeong jeong & piandao will actually interact
maybe there's still hope that jeong jeong will be in character. i mean maybe when you're being cornered by an angry mob and you realize you actually don't want to die (despite thinking the world would be better off without you) you start spouting off nonsense about how you're one of the good ones and don't deserve to die. idk. i just want them to bring back the self-loathing
wait last post just made me realize they cut smellerbee and longshot from the jet ba sing se plotline in natla :( we don't get to actually see how jet's obsession with revenge on the fire nation is alienating his friends and preventing him from starting a new life in the city we just have him offhandedly reference that he's no longer hanging out with them. boooo
Longshot and Smellerbee! (Watercolor + gouache)
Really relate to Smellerbee getting misgendered and wish i had a friend like Longshot who would remind me that “as long as i am comfdent with who i am, it doesn’t matter what other people think”
