Dear Tagah,
I hope this letter finds you well. Although I love me an aggressive, muscly, ripped, fine ass, beefy king, I think you may be misunderstanding what I actually meant. Anyways, seeing as you’re a million years old, and killed me and my friends on the first date, I think it’s pretty obvious it’s you not me and it was never going to work out between us.
Thanks for nothing I guess?

Bonus:
you know much talk about zuko and the male members of the gaang being overly buff and dehydrated looking in the movie but have we considered katara. the WATERBENDER

i think the reason i can't get behind the bender/nonbender conflicts as they're presented in the atla movie & lok is that in atla, the primary bending-based oppression is firebending vs literally every other type of bending - the genocide of the air nomads and southern waterbenders, the treatment of earthbenders in "imprisoned". in the southern water tribe and many parts of the earth kingdom, the idea of nonbenders being oppressed by benders would be completely ridiculous. you're hiding your bender loved ones from the people who want to take them away. maybe fire nation nonbenders would feel oppressed by benders in their own country, but they're not exactly being oppressed by water and earth benders. the idea that people 10 years after this war would think of bender and nonbender as more meaningful distinctions than nation just does not make sense to me. i can maybe be a bit more forgiving of lok bc it's later in the timeline & specific to a city with more unity amongst nations (thus allowing new divides to emerge) but i still don't feel like there was a ton of acknowledgement that nation was the primary axis of oppression for 100 years
At least in the Earth Kingdom we are shown that bending soldiers who aren’t actively on the front lines / engaging in combat against the Fire Nation were fully willing to abuse their power and authority against a largely non-bending villager population. Probably those divides went fairly deep and went deeper once the war ended, so it makes sense for at least one nation to feel that way.
that's a great point, soldiers in both earth & fire are predominantly benders and that means when the soldiers come home there's going to be a sudden influx of benders into civilian society and that adjustment could be hard. maybe there's a sort of men-coming-back-after-WWII dynamic where benders come back to find nonbenders occupying roles usually filled by benders and get upset that the nonbenders are "taking their rightful jobs", and then there's a sort of return-to-tradition push to get nonbenders out of prominent positions. i can totally see a phenomenon of former soldiers used to having their asses kissed being upset at their perceived loss of power and trying to maintain the wartime hierarchy.
but see, this is why i said i can't get behind bender/nonbender conflicts as presented. this conflict makes a lot of sense - it comes out of existing divides we see in atla. it's not all nonbenders vs all nonbenders, it's specific to certain nations and their post-war environments. the obvious villains are the people trying to oppress others, not people fighting against oppression. there could be good bender vs nonbender storylines in atlaverse but the bender vs nonbender conflicts in the atla movie and lok just feel so disconnected from the society established in atla
