pov: you're sokka and you just made a hilarious sword joke
(based on this photo of sifu kisu)
In contrast to Toph, Aang had a landslide winner with H!
Katara was funny to do because she famously has very little variation between her outfits. Her main inspirations were:
Mongolian deel + Inuit parka
Women's fashion
Practical, but not strictly so
Settled but uncertain

I probably have the most thoughts about Katara's life after the show so it goes under the cut:
it is so baffling when people claim movie sokka was voiced by the guy from voltron. like comparing the characters is stupid but at least that's explainable as "people are racist and think all brown guys are the same", this is just being confidently wrong about an easily googleable fact
i take that back it is also racist bc what do you mean you were willing to believe a white guy was voicing an indigenous character without any further confirmation

big tshirt that says MY INTERPRETATIONS MUST HAVE A STRONG BASIS IN THE SOURCE MATERIAL on the front and THIS IS FUN TO ME on the back
a doodle before i sleep
round-faced katara is so precious to me... when ppl draw her with a kpop face, especially that tiny upturned nose, i personally ascend to heaven to rip an angels wings off π
more people should write alloromantic characters in qprs tbh. i mean more people should write qprs in general in all circumstances but my particular hill to die on tonight is more alloromantic characters in qprs. in qprs with aromantic partners, in qprs with another alloromantic partner, in qprs with other characters where they could technically have compatible orientations romantically but that's not what kind of relationship they have or want anyway.
there's just a lot of fun stuff there.

So an old man meets an old friend with a new face...
SOKKA AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER (2026)
even leaving aside how bender/nonbender conflicts don't make sense 10 years after atla and that trying to bring back the airbenders while antagonizing the last airbender is a stupid plan it's also kinda wild how "the denied" want to be benders bc they believe they don't have value or power as nonbenders and the movie just doesn't refute their beliefs at all. like in atla when a nonbender felt inadequate compared to benders there was a whole episode about how you're worthy as you are & have so much to offer meanwhile the resolution for this group of people who think they're worthless without bending is to give them special status based on the .2 seconds they were benders
sorta unrelated but i also don't know why we needed an explanation for how the air acolytes started. like, it's not that hard to imagine people being interested in learning about the air nomads and helping revitalize the culture. people with distant air nomad ancestry, historians, people like teo and the mechanist who live in/near air nomad sites, people who want to do something to help heal the world after the war, etc.
in fact, i think the way to fix the movie would be to replace "the denied" with air acolytes. like aang sets off on his quest because he & the acolytes uncover sonam's story in their historical research, some of them volunteer to be the new airbenders and he's very hopeful. but these early air acolytes are people who care about the air nomad genocide to the point of leaving their original nations to work on air nomad restoration, plus they're fresh off a war and now they're doing work that's teaching them exactly how much the war took. some of them end up sympathizing with tagah and thinking an air nomad empire sounds like justified payback for the atrocities, and they volunteer to join that empire just as they'd once volunteered to join aang's new nation.
i think tagah's army being made up of people explicitly traumatized by the war (instead of some vague "my life has been hard") would give the movie's message about revenge more weight. tagah's trauma is thinly sketched in one little flashback scene, meanwhile we've had a whole show seeing the toll of the war. and the finale of the atla had that same message about revenge, that you have to break the cycle and not let what you've been through make you cruel. can't hurt to say it again!
the movie would end with tagah's army being re-integrated into the air acolytes, who are now - in addition to the historical preservation - focusing on helping people heal from trauma via air nomad beliefs and practices. after all, we've learned that bringing back the air nomads of the past isn't the answer. instead, the love the air nomads gave aang must be reborn in new love, and the best way to honor them is to build a new future
