free my girl she did all that and that’s what makes her such a compellingly complex character. that’s her essence
(ID in ALT Text)
listen i am here fully admitting that that one, THAT ONE really short moment where zuko activates his fire jets underneath his feet, are like two second that i keep watching on repeat over and over if i stubble upon on youtube edit, for.... well uh... REASON! and yeha adult gaang is hot and snatched, and buff, and attractive, and its all in their cheekbones. (may or may not more doodles in the future).
but my brain is the whole time "gosh none of them drink enough water"
my noble and wise rare pair vs your crazy reaching stupid crack ship
a corner i've accidentally written myself into with young pianjeong is that since they're different ranks and military divisions they can't really do a lot of the plausible deniability homoerotic friendship things. no communal showers bunkmates comrades in arms etc. it's just like "why is the admiral spending time with some random soldier?" and then "oh wait the admiral's never really seemed interested in women and that soldier is the most beautiful man ever"
of course it's not really a corner because the power dynamic is the whole point. piandao brings a sword to a fire fight and wins and piandao is thrilled he can take down a powerful bender and jeong jeong is thrilled that someone's actually willing to challenge him. and by thrilled i mean horny about it
@erisenyo oh my god i can't believe i've never considered this before. i think maybe bc they're army and navy i thought they couldn't work alongside each other but hey, maybe the admiral visits an army base and meets a promising soldier and pulls strings for a transfer. piandao is underestimated as a nonbender but he IS talented, it wouldn't obviously be the admiral selecting a hot guy for his staff.
also piandao as an aide/secretary is kind of that strategist sidekick role sokka excels in (always love adding more parallels) and it's maybe considered a more acceptable role for a talented nonbender than the front lines. which would probably annoy piandao despite being good at it and enjoying the proximity to jeong jeong. idk if i've mentioned this before but at some point i realized that hamilton was a big inspiration for the pianjeong storyline - the central narrative foils of "ambitious orphan kid" & "reserved disciplined rich kid" - and being a secretary instead of on the front lines like he wants is certain a part of hamilton's story. so we've got a thematic throughline there. and jeong jeong wanting to keep piandao off the battlefield to keep him safe...my heart <3
and then, of course, this all ends in tragedy. jeong jeong tries his best to make sure his desertion doesn't reflect on piandao in any way, not by outright ending the relationship (because that in itself might flag for piandao that something was going on) but by pulling away a bit towards the end. so he gives piandao what he wants, gives him a command and lets him go fight instead of being an aide. piandao isn't there when jeong jeong deserts. he hears about it in a letter out to his remote posting weeks later. his hands are clean. nobody will ever know what they were to each other
I do really love how the whole 'admiral pulls strings for a transfer' thing plays into the power dynamics of it all too -- who has the power on paper and in everyone else's eyes vs who is able to put who on his ass. Plus the thin plausible deniability of it not *obviously* being the admiral selecting a hot guy for his staff, but maybe, you know, his staff just happens to often be quite attractive, and now there's the power dynamics of all *those* perceptions too.
I like putting Piandao into that little torment nexus too of putting him in a role he does actually like and is very good at, but one that everyone else thinks is more acceptable to him so obviously he doesn't want to do it, then. And how does it feel to be gaining honor and recognition and accolades for something he is good at, what that isn't what he wants? Or for basically his ability to fit really well into the box people want to shove him into?
I think Jeong Jeong trying to keep Piandao off the battlefield could also be a really interesting ongoing theme/tension point leading up to the desertion. Like its about Piandao's safety but slowly it starts to become about the war. Keep Piandao off the front lines, keep himself off the front lines, keep everyone off the front lines. But also, if Jeong Jeong can only maintain Piandao as his secretary or whatever as long as he's in the general position, because for administrative reasons Piandao is on loan or whatever and will revert back to his original unit when Jeong Jeong releases him, so Jeong Jeong has to stay on the front lines to keep Piandao and slowly starts to question that/resent it...something something bureaucracy having them in a trap, and then how Piandao might feel on the receiving end of that, maybe not fully knowing Jeong Jeong is thinking of deserting/feeling that way, but just picking up on the resentment and thinking its about his posting on the front lines and then he hears about the desertion and that won't get emotionally complicated at all, definitely not lol
i'm not sure i imagine jeong jeong filling out his staff with handsome men as a rule - he's so concerned with discipline and self-control he wouldn't seek out "distractions" - but piandao being hand-selected does probably flag for some people, and the "leader and his aide" brand of plausible deniability closeness they're working with does imply a certain dynamic that is Not accurate to their actual dynamic.
and it's not their professional dynamic either. another aspect of Piandao's Torment Nexus is that as jeong jeong's aide he actually has a degree of power and influence. sure, jeong jeong is a strict boss, but he expects good work from piandao because he genuinely believes in piandao's abilities. he asks piandao's opinion on major decisions, takes his input seriously, and even gives him some leeway to do tasks on his own without oversight (a big deal for such a noted control freak). piandao resents his role to some degree, but would he be allowed to speak his mind to any other superior officer? would his ideas be taken as seriously? would he have the same level of agency over his work? is this, maybe, the best he can hope for?
jeong jeong trying to keep piandao off the front lines is 100% a point of tension - because piandao assumes that eventually, jeong jeong will let him go. jeong jeong believes in him, not like everyone else who underestimates non-benders. jeong jeong knows that's what he wants. but when piandao finally confronts him about it, jeong jeong just talks about how hard it would be to replace him and the heavy workload they're dealing with. maybe later, he says, but he keeps pushing the conversation down the road. and he just seems so tired all the time, and even more brooding and prickly than usual.
piandao knows that jeong jeong is a bit disillusioned with the military. jeong jeong has always freely complained to him about incompetent commanders and undisciplined recruits. of course jeong jeong's seen some painful things on the front lines. but it still hurts that he's treating piandao like someone who needs to be protected. piandao knows war is dangerous. he's not Stupid.
(i mean he is, a little. piandao wanting to be on the battlefield is very much "i will prove my worth by fulfilling the imperialist ideal" meanwhile jeong jeong is like "being the embodiment of the imperialist ideal is fucking miserable, i'm trying to keep you out of it")
(also i've definitely implied in fics that piandao has front-lines experience but maybe in this version of events he's been stuck in non-combat or minimal combat roles for his whole career so it really is something jeong jeong has experience with and piandao doesn't)
but then, finally, jeong jeong gives in. he lets piandao go. piandao feels a bit guilty, but he's finally getting what he wants. and this isn't goodbye forever, they'll see each other again soon, right?
...right?

If only the Avatar’s Address were Written on that Flyer…
寻飞天野牛 名阿柏有六足重十吨 如有消息请联络 降世神通安昂 上环九十六区第二百一十七栋
Searching for a flying sky bison. Name: Appa; has six legs; weight: 10 tons. If you have any news (about Appa) please contact: Avatar Aang, Upper Ring, 96th District, Building 217.
I know I say this a lot, but it’s crazy to me that the atla fandom has any sort of tendency at all to portray zuko as rational, levelheaded, clever, knowledgeable, studious, meticulous, practical, reasonable, logical, or otherwise intelligent. while he does possess certain strengths, his greatest are his grit and tenacity, resilience built up through a lifetime of failures born of a tendency for heedlessness, rushing into choices without thinking through the consequences or weighing his options whatsoever. he has his moments, to be sure, but that’s largely because he happens to be far luckier than he gives himself credit for. oh, and while we’re at it, he’s also certainly not stoic, aloof, even-tempered, mature, or quiet. the fact that he’s foolhardy and impulsive and reckless and dramatic and loud and emotionally expressive and myopically driven and strong-willed are sort of his defining qualities, actually. they’re also the traits that make his character actually endearing, so im not really sure why people seem so determined to negate them.
I was at the market today and a young man was very rude to the tea vendor. He said the tea was "just hot leaf water." Then proceded to laugh at the vendor.
He is correct. It is hot leaf water. And the leaves matter. And the temperature of the water matters. And the vessel you drink it from matters. And who you share it with matters most of all.
Everything is "just" something, if you are determined to miss the point.
Uncle stop vaguing me
Teethies <3
They make me sick/affectionate
In Avatar fics the seems to be a trend where Toph put her hand on peoples face's (usually Zuko's?) to see them and I can't help but imagine that if she wanted to see someone's face she would get them to lie in the dirt (or trip them into it) face first then put her hands on the ground to let earth sense see for her
This combines beautifully with the very real world fact that blind people DO NOT want to see more of the "blind people touching other people's faces" trope in media
So someone offers to let Toph touch their face
But being Toph, she is sick of merely explaining, again, that Blind People Don't Want To Paw Your Greasy Face
So she just makes them eat dirt instead
"Thanks, I got a great look."

The gaang go to JCPenneys
First day of Spring 🌿
I’m a sucker for dad mode Aang 🙂↕️ Bumi is in his special SWT clothes that Grangran and Hakoda had made for him. My headcanon is that Katara made Aang a betrothal necklace in the shape of his arrow and carved her own necklace design into it bc I think that’s cute af (and also really wanted to draw Aang with jewellery heh)
I’ve been playing around with linework and colouring — trying out a more minimalist style — highly inspired by some comic illustrators. I want to try more stuff like this. What other avatar art do folks wanna see???
reason 1 million why i love zukka: how extra insane it makes hakoda's family tree
(links // tip jar!)
@narrativelysignificantturtleduck Hakoda W
lol i have made my brand Known. honestly i feel like hakoda never fully wraps his head around the avatar and the firelord being his family. like he has to block it out for the sake of his sanity. they're his fun son-in-laws aang and zuko definitely NOT two of the most powerful people in the world. hakoda isn't friendly with the fire lord that's crazy! someone asks him "what it's like to have the avatar as a son-in-law" and he has to take a moment to go oh right you mean aang. uh yeah it's great i always get to pet his bison when he visits
one thing i am unironically looking forward to in natla s2 is jeong jeong admiring katara's healing abilities & expressing a desire to be a waterbender AFTER the show has established that waterbending healing is considered feminine. accidentally makes her MORE transgender
i mean unless they fully cut that part of the storyline. it's always a toss-up with natla whether they're going to doggedly hit every beat of an iconic scene or chop it up and throw it at the wall

Okay, real talk now. People love to tag male characters in posts about women, but this post is gonna take this seriously. Is there actually a canonically male character you believe is a trans woman? Or at least has made into a trans woman for a fanart or a fanfic? Excluding the ones canonically implied.
Sound off in the tags! Link to the fanart or fic if available. Do it. Give me the girls. Make more women.
