piandao prefers to be selective about his students. he is NOT happy when he gets a letter from the fire lord like "you're training my failson and this is non-negotiable" but defying the fire lord probably means fleeing the country and he doesn't feel like doing that so he's like UGH FINE I GUESS. zuko comes to his place and he's like "okay kid so why do YOU want to learn the art of the sword" and zuko's like "bc i suck at firebending and my dad wants me to learn" and piandao's like "so you're not interested in swords, it's just that your dad wants you to learn?" and zuko's like "no i like swords i love the cool fight scenes in plays" and he starts mimicking stage combat moves the way kids will explain their favorite superhero fight scenes and piandao's like okay cool i can work with this. he knows the guy who works with the local theater troupe on stage combat and is like hey the fire prince likes stage combat you wanna come teach him the dual blades? the fire lord's paying me a shit ton to train his kid i'll split it with you. and of course this guy's like FUCK YEAH and comes to piandao's place and piandao's like "hey so this guy's gonna help me teach you swordplay, he's an actor with the local theater troupe isn't that cool?" and zuko's starstruck and delighted and doesn't really notice that piandao's pretty hands-off about the whole sword training thing and mostly just teaching him calligraphy and painting. he comes back from piandao's a much better firebender (turns out learning to be more physically coordinated in a supportive environment helps) and ozai's like great this worked and zuko never ends up using his swords in front of anyone. zuko goes around confidently saying "i was trained by master piandao" and nobody ever calls him on it until years later he's sparring with sokka and sokka's like huh weird piandao taught me a totally different style? and zuko's like well yeah i was trained by piandao and also his assistant who was more of an expert in this style and sokka's like huh i didn't know fat was an expert in dual blades and zuko's like no this guy's name was [x] and sokka's like??? are you sure you were trained by piandao? and zuko's like yeah! he was there! and sokka's like zuko i think piandao scammed your dad
