honestly aside from piandao living in the fire nation he'd actually make more sense in ba sing se than jeong jeong. like i can imagine a guy with a million hobbies and a commitment to sharing knowledge enjoying a bustling diverse city

googled it and it turns out there were piandao and hakoda casting announcements bc seasons 2 & 3 were filmed around the same time. there was no guarentee which season any of the announced characters would be in, i just got lucky(?) jeong jeong was in this one

i also fucking called it on azula blaming herself for ursa being taken. fuck yeah

i like this long feng. he's like still definitely a sinister villain but he's kinda operating on his own agenda where he's sorta sympathetic and we root for him against azula

i think it's silly to read the changes in natla as the result of pushing one ship or another when the changes go WAY deeper but like. replacing the secret tunnel kataang with katara&sokka. zuko blue spirit and katara painted lady parallels. the way zuko supports katara being the painted lady when in canon it was aang. the crystal catacombs scene - THE iconic ship scene to the point of being canonically acknowledged as such in "ember island players" - being more emotionally intimate (scar reveal). and now, finally, when aang and iroh show up to free them aang doesn't hug katara. and this small thing is the most obvious of them all, because in the original there's a shot where aang and zuko glare at each other over katara and iroh's shoulders and that shot is still there - except that aang is standing alone. to replicate that beat so exactly but only change this one detail feels very deliberate. and while i don't WANT to get in the middle of the war i do have a side and it is not this one and i am. annoyed

there's probably something actually thematically wrong with katara learning about his scar in canon but i'm mostly just like. noooo the gaang's only supposed to find out about zuko's scar in fanfics!

sokka's speech about failure to the mechanist is giving zuko's speech about failure to sokka at the boiling rock and hey. zuko's the failure not sokka

i guess the mechanist not showing up again DID mean he wasn't taken away to be brainwashed at lake laogai but like. really? this is it? the dai li take people who are troublemakers and just stick them in prison? no freaky mind control? i hope i'm wrong and it shows up eventually but we're almost halfway through the episode

don't want to get in the middle of the great ship war but katara being down on herself for secretly helping people bc aang didn't approve and zuko being the one who's supported her in that work (fighting alongside her in that one scene & doing similar secret good deeds) does in fact feel like annoying ship-that-must-not-be-named propaganda, especially since a) aang was mostly just upset she was sneaking around and lying to him and b) in canon when aang found out what katara was doing he was like wow that's awesome can i help and they did ecoterrorism together
