it's just tennis (it's not): a collection of the unspoken – part one
four line sentences are good and okay. its cool. you dont need to end your setnence or that thought! add another comma or an em dash. everything will be okay. it makes sense and flows well. #awesome #mybehemothsentence
Big day for annoying people like me

The pic of gerard looking so fucking miserable in front of an arid desert landscape behind a chainlink fence is honestly probably one of the best pics of him. That is literally how it fucking feels
How it fucking feels
In the spirit of New Year and the blessings of wealth, let's calculate how much money Airplane would have made with PIDW:
We know that he posts 10k words updates daily, and would sometimes post extra chapters on weekends. Let's say that on average, he posts 80k words per week, which means he publishes 4.16 million words per year.
At the average rate of 2 cents per 1000 word purchase, his earnings translate into ¥83.20/year (~$12) per regular reader. At the relatively conservative estimate of a quarter million regular readers (it's the top ranking novel on Qidian Zhongdian after all), this would mean a net revenue of ¥20,800,000, or approximately 3 million USD per year.
I've never written on Qidian so I don't know how much their platform cut is, but let's say it's 50%. This means that Airplane is still making a net profit of 1.5 million USD per year, just from webnovel sales. This does not factor in reader tips (some readers tip quite a bit), print publishing royalties, merchandising, franchise adaptation sales etc.
Airplane was not broke, at least not at the height of PIDW's popularity.
Re. exploitative contracts: a quirk of signing on with an e-platform vs traditional publishing is that with a webnovel platform, many only offer exclusive contracts with you as a person, and not on a book by book basis. So for the duration of your contract, which tend to last anything from 3-10 years, you’re obligated to write for and only for that platform. They operate more like a talent agency for a performing artist or something than a publisher. But unlike say music agencies, there’s very little cost on their part to take on new talent, so every year they sign on a shit ton of new writers hoping that at least a couple make it big. Most don’t end up earning much so it doesn’t really matter what the contract contains, but if you do make it big, you’re basically stuck with them for the full duration of your initial contract and are somewhat at their mercy in terms of franchising rights and the like
More context re. cost of living in China. Even if Airplane and Cucumber live in an expensive tier 1 city, with around $5 mil saved up Airplane can absolutely afford a very nice apartment and still have some cash left over. With the exception of housing, living costs in China were and still are extremely low compared to major Western cities. In my experience its something like 1/5.
HOWEVER, I doubt he'd have had the time and energy to move, or make any other drastic change to his life, while he's still pumping out 10k per day. This is a bit embarrassing to admit but decades ago, I also went through a brief period of attempting (not very successfully) to climb the webnovel rankings, which wasn't nearly as competitive then. And oh boy. I was pretty much either thinking about writing or actively writing from the moment I woke up to the second I passed out after posting the latest update.
In all likelihood he was holding off on a lot of things for after he fully finished PIDW, at which point he'd be able to take a short break from writing My understanding is that he was still actively updating (extras?) when he died.

When i was 13 i decided to become penpals with the surviving members of the heavens gate cult who were still maintaining their email/website/book sales and they responded to me a couple of times before my mom found out and i genuinely couldnt fathom why she would be upset with me
So I watched the movie

Dan liking this comment, like 'yeah checks out'
all sports is rpf on some level so sports rpf is the only logical next step
the games are real, the stakes are real, the players themselves are unknowable except for what they carefully want you to know. the narratives are real, but the league knows you care about them, so they amplify them. the graphics next to the player's heads to tell you this is how their season is going, the camera lingering on them as they lean down to tie their shoes or their skates, looking solemn, the commentators tell you this is important, the marketing tells you this is important, in case you didnt know. the stories are already there but theyre also well-crafted. you care about these players. you care about how they perform. not just because you want to see your team win but because you want to see the conclusion of the narrative being built around them.
not everyone is doing sports rpf the way you might be familiar with it in fandom spaces, but sports is always, on some level, rpf. the people are real, but the reason you care about them is because a story is being told about them, through numbers, satistics, win/loss ratios, championships. there is an interest in amplifying the drama and centering the narrative so you care more about what you're seeing while watching the game. and is that not simply rpf...........
