a lot of aspects of gilead society read as plausible to me (the mention at the end of hindu elements to the state religion was a clear reference to the nazis, which i’d been thinking of through the whole book as historical basis for a govt seeking to overturn how a society views marriage and reproduction) except the name gilead itself, because US american conservatism is so tied to patriotism as an identity more than a belief that i don’t believe any radical US-based consevative religious movement would ever discard the name America. perhaps this was less so in the 80s. not that fiction needs to be entirely realistic anyway, but as cultural critique it weakened for me there.
