Imagine if you met someone who can't eat watermelon. Not that they're allergic or unable somehow, but they just haven't figured out how to do that. So you're like "what the hell do you mean? it works just like eating anything else, you open your mouth, sink your teeth in, take a bite and chew. If you can bite, chew and swallow, you should be able to eat a watermelon."
And they agree that yes, they do know how to eat, in theory. The problem is the watermelon. Surely, if they figured out where to start, they'd figure out how to do it, but they have no clue how to get started with it.
This goes back and forth. No, it's not an emotional issue, they're not afraid of the watermelon. They can eat any other fruit, other sweet things, and other watery things ("it's watery?" they ask you). Is it the colour? Do they have a problem eating things that are green on the outside and red on the inside?
"It's red on the inside?"
Wait, they've never seen the inside? At this point you have to ask them how, exactly, they eat the watermelon. So to demonstrate, they take a whole, round, uncut watermelon, and try to bite straight into it. Even if they could bite through the crust, there's no way to get human jaws around it.
"Oh, you're supposed to cut it first. You cut the crust open and only chew through the insides."
And they had no idea. All their life this person has had no idea how to eat a watermelon, despite of being told again and again and again that it's easy, it's ridiculous to struggle with something so simple, there's no way that someone just can't eat a watermelon, how can you even mange to be bad at something as fucking simple as eating watermelon.
If someone can't do something after being repeatedly told to "just do it", there might be some key component missing that one side has no idea about, and the other side assumed was so obvious it goes without mention.
Yep.
https://drmaciver.substack.com/p/how-to-do-everythingĀ had a nice list of additional examples like this, with (non-)obvious major insights with regard to opening stitched bags, cleaning your bathroom floor, using a search engine, catching a ball, pinging somebody, proving a theorem, playing sudoku, passing asĀ ānormalā, improving your writing, generating novel ideas, and solving your problem.
If youād asked me six months ago how to get better at something, Iād probably have pointed you to how to do hard things. I still think this is a good approach and you should do it, but I now think itās the wrong starting point and Iāve been undervaluing small insights. [...]
I think my revised belief is that if you are stuck at how to get better at something, spend a little while assuming thereās just some trick to it youāve missed. You can try to generate the trick yourself, but itās probably easier to learn it by observing someone else being good at the thing, asking them some questions, and seeing if you have any lightbulb moment.
My fiance played the clarinet when he was in school. When he was first learning to play, he rented an instrument from the school to learn on. He was the last chair clarinet, had been for years, because he could not make notes that required the register key. For years, they kept making him do embrature exercises and he started to get a few notes, with lots of effort. Eventually he had to get private lessons to stay in band.
Every time he tells me this story, his frustration by this point in the story, years later, is evident. He still sounds frustrated by it, despite all the time that passed. Teachers had been giving him crap for years because he hadn't been making much progress with the instrument.
When he got to the private instructor, she acknowledged his frustration, and asked him to try to play for her. He did, and she saw all he was doing. She then did something no one else had done before. She asked him to put his mouthpiece on a different clarinet and try to play the same notes. Like magic, it worked. She looked at the clarinet he had been using and found that the school's clarinet needed it's pads replaced.
He went from last chair to first chair nearly overnight, having been taught far more techniques than typically taught at that age just to overcome the broken instrument preventing him from making noise.
Sometimes you don't need to brute force a problem. Sometimes your clarinet is just broken.
Not quite sure why the clarinet addition got me crying, but here you go people: just in case, let's get you some new pads.

NO WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT šššššš
Not to be a Boomer but your social media should be your own space, not something employers are allowed to look at to judge you beyond the qualifications stated in your resume and cover letter
Resume has my qualifications. Cover letter states my intentions and goals within the job. Interview is for any other information relative to the job and shows my professionalism.
Thereās nothing else you, as an employer, need to know.
The level of entitlement employers feel over our private info is insane. I remember my own employer sitting across me on his laptop, bitching endlessly over the fact the candidate whose Facebook profile he wanted to check had it set strictly to friends-only. He was serously annoyed her posts and photos and whatnot were not available for him, a total stranger, to see.
Just the previous day, he had gone on a rant about how women need to be Cautious in this Dangerous World and have a Responsibility to Keep Themselves Safe.
He did not see the irony.
I had a job interview where they insisted you hand over your social media links so they could look through your stuff to ensure you did not āreflect poorly on the brandā. I told them that I didnāt have any, and technically, if you use my legal name you will get three women. None of them are me (one is twice my age and runs an antique store in FL, one is 5yrs younger than me but has a PhD in something unrelated to anything like what I studied, the third lives in London and posts a lot about pubs), and the interviewer looked up my name. He showed me these three accounts, asked me which was mine. I told him the truth. None of them were me.
Your online experience should be yours to enjoy. Iād suggest using a nickname, handle, or pseudonym in order to help maintain that line. If youāre Nik Smith in real life, Iād suggest being like Nik Writes A Lot or Htims Kin. Keeps old high school classmates, annoying cousins, and nosey HR dudes from snooping.

This comic makes me so stupid emotional. She might have never known.
saw this comment and i had to
all conversations about bruce being responsible for jason's death drive me insane not even necessarily in a like "this is a bad point" way but in a like. everything about this in a meta sense makes me crazyyyy way.
what if you lived in a universe where child sidekicks could not die because child sidekicks were intended to be a marketing ploy to attract child readers by presenting a child's power fantasy of "what if i could be the teammate to my favorite superhero (and not get grievously hurt/killed)". so you have a child sidekick because, in a meta sense, there's no actual serious risk of them dying and thus this doesn't really pose any serious ethical questions.
and then changing social norms and a changing media landscape lead to the universe you exist in getting tonally darker; your beloved ward who you've always had a great relationship with is suddenly someone you're arguing with constantly, the crimes are getting more real and less cartoony, the world is becoming scarier and more dangerous. and one day the people who control your universe decide that they want to really drive home this new tonal shift by undoing that most fundamental rule, that child sidekicks cannot die, and they kill your son.
this is not something that was supposed to happen. this was not supposed to ever be a possibility. you took on a child sidekick in a universe where child sidekicks could not die, and now you are being framed retroactively as a horrible person for doing something that is only now a questionable decision because the rules have changed. and, oh, by the way? child sidekicks are still necessary for marketing purposes. so you are fated to always continuously have a child sidekick even though you are now famous for the fact that your second child sidekick (who is also, again, your beloved son) died. and everyone blames you for this. and everyone hates you for this. and everyone in universe and out mocks you for your son's death and tells you it's your fault. because some comic writers decided to make a Dark Edgy Decision that retroactively made you culpable for child endangerment.
Also, can I just add... it makes perfect sense that within the narrative, Jason blames Bruce for his death. Because the fundamental premise was that he was supposed to stay safe, like Dick did. He's not necessarily justified in his anger (additional reasons apply), but it makes sense. I would feel betrayed too. What is not justified is everyone else taking Jason's anger to dogpile on Bruce. Especially when I look at some very shitty takes from readers. š
Do you guys enjoy my new profile
Does anynyan nose that one Undertale fanfic where the reader is Flowey the Flower and helps Frisk out on their journey but there's actually two Floweys in the Underground?
I can barely remember but if you DO nose of it, hit a kitty up bro I wanna reread it bad.
When Zuko apologized to uncle Iroh in the tent cause he was so ashamed of his actions and what heād done to the only person who unconditionally believed in his ability to do good >>>>>
So okay, Iāve given this rant before but this is another good time for it.
Structurally speaking, ATLA did something important with Zuko that, in a purely mechanistic sense of narrative development, I think a lot of people donāt notice immediately, and that even fewer people who want to emulate what was done with him get.
Which is Zuko is made a protagonist VERY early, and the show goes out of its way to continually place Zuko into situations where the audience empathizes and roots for him.
This happens in literally the second episode of the series, if we count the two-part premiere as a single episode, which I think we should. The A-plot of that episode, āThe Southern Air Temple,ā is Aang reckoning with the genocide of his people⦠but the B-plot?
The B-plot is the introduction of Zhao, and more specifically, his introduction in a way that is calculate to shift the audience, whose introduction to Zuko did NOT engender a ton of sympathy to him, directly and forcefully onto his side. They want Zuko to kick Zhaoās ass.
This continues all through book one and book two. Remember, Zuko is never, ever the main villain of this series. Thatās initially Zhao, followed by Azula and Ozai. (Plus various temporary players like Long Feng.) Whenever Zuko isnāt placed into direct conflict with the other protagonists, heās always written and presented in a way that is careful, VERY VERY careful, not to make him too monstrous, and to make us root for him. Heās placed right next to Iroh, who is designed for people to like, and that reflects back onto Zuko; we want Zuko to be better than he is because we want Iroh to have good things.
Put aside for the moment whether any specific character, including Zuko, deserves their redemption. If youāve decided youāre going to do that, you have to erect the proper narrative scaffolding around them, and it extends to far more things than ādid this person not do things that were too horribleā and āis this person genuinely sorry and is working really hard to atone.ā Thereās a difference between protagonist and white hat, but if you want someone to eventually wear that white hat, you REALLY need to establish them as a plausible protagonist early on.
Yeah, it was made obvious from the get go that Zuko is definitely nowhere near Zhaoās level of nasty, which in turn means heās nowhere near Azulaās and nowhere in the scope of Ozaiās.
1.)Ā
He made a deal with Aang to leave the Southern Water Tribe alone if Aang went with him. When Aang escaped with help from two of those tribe members, Zuko didnāt demand they go back and destroy what was left of the tribe as revenge. He didnāt even think of it as an option. There was no split second where he went, should I/shouldnāt I?
2.)Ā
This is repeated. He corners the Avatar somewhere, causes some damage to the area in the ensuing fight, but does not stick around to raze the village/monastery to the ground and kill the people when he doesnāt get what he wants. Doesnāt consider this a necessary action even once.
3.)Ā
The Iroh&Zuko relationship is juxtaposed with the Zhao&Zuko relationship. Both older men have more power over him. Iroh is a retired War General and Prince who is not banished. Zhao is a Commander in favor of the Firelord, who is also not banished. We could tell early on that Iroh is wise and despite being on the bad side, seems to be pretty chill. We took a liking to him immediately. Zhao is the opposite. He is very much like early!Zuko. Impulsive, rude, loud, cocky, etc⦠But why is he more annoying? Why do we root for Zuko as opposed to him?Ā
Because we see what Zuko is like with his Uncle Iroh. Iroh does not rub in the fact that heās banished. He doesnāt use that when reprimanding him for his attitude or his failings. That is a hot iron and he knows it. Itās to the point where Iroh can bend fire in Zukoās face and Zuko is perfectly relaxed over it and doesnāt once believe his uncle will hurt him. There is a lot of faith in Iroh, from this angsty teenager, and itās very obvious with their interactions.
Zhao is not trustworthy from the start. Weāre shown this by how both Zuko and Iroh are hesitant to interact with him and donāt want to linger in areas he has control over, for too long. They even lie to him despite him obviously having more favor in the Firelordās eyes than either of them do. Zhaoās personality opposes both Zuko and Iroh. And as we like Iroh, we want him to win and have nice things, as stated above. But Zuko&Iroh is a package deal. And as Zhao reveals himself more and more to be nasty even if itās subtle, we want Zuko to win even harder.
And even when Zuko wins and heās in the prime position to do to Zhao what Ozai did to Zuko for also āspeaking out of turnā⦠he doesnāt do it. He walks away. He is the bigger man in that scenario. And Iroh further puts shame onto Zhao when he goes against the sacred rules of the Agni Kai because he canāt handle a loss to a banished teen. We are shown that Zuko follows rules and has honor, which is reinforced by Irohās, āeven in exile, my nephew is more honorable than youā. Irohās Word is basically Law at this point. Sf he says it is so, then he must be right and the audience accepts that. He knows Zuko better than us and hopefully weāll get to understand more as the story progresses.
Already by the 3rd episode, weāre shown that Zuko is in no way the worst person from the Fire Nation. In fact, weāre given a sort of scale now from the four major Fire Nation people we know of. IrohāZukoāā-ZhaoāFirelord.
Weāre also hoping that Iroh rubs off on Zuko enough for him to also become wise and learn to chill out.
4.)Ā
WhenĀ āThe Stormā finally rolls around, weāre pretty invested by then in the Iroh&Zuko relationship and that episode gives us so much more info into Zukoās character and we are shown that Iroh is right. He has honor and he cares for others. And yet itās obvious the Firelord doesnāt because we see Zuko do the right thing(protesting the plan to treat new recruits as cannon fodder) in the wrong place, and then his face gets burned off by his father because of it. And further, heās banished for refusing to fight his own father. What sane parent wants to do battle with their own child? What sane parent banishes their child for speaking out of turn at the defense of their own peoplesā lives? What the fuck is wrong with the Firelord?
Zuko was punished severely for showing compassion and having a kind heart. And Iroh(and the ship crew even) is properly mortified by the punishments his nephew received for it, which in turn affects the audienceās perception of this situation. Iroh doesnāt like it, itās especially bad then.
Now we start wondering why does Zuko wants to go back to the guy who burned his face off?! Iroh, talk some sense into him! PLEASE!
Halfway through S1, they got us to the point of wanting Zuko to have a redemption arc.Ā
Making the audience want a character to be redeemed is also very important in this. We were shown he has redeemable qualities. We want that pay off! Do it justice!
I love him!!!
