I feel like the CGI in Marvel movies (and most movies for that matter) would look a lot better if they focused on making it look good rather than making it look realistic.

Like ok walk with me here: a human being can’t shoot lasers out of their eyes or shoot fireballs from their hands. The effects artists working on Marvel movies attempt to ask the question “what would those things look like if they were real?” But the problem is those things aren’t real. You can’t make something with no basis in reality look realistic, it will just end up looking uncanny (ie the live action Sonic design, the fixed version was less realistic but better to look at).

Sure more cartoony effects may look slightly kitschy, but audiences can stand to watch something that’s kitsch, the same cannot be said for something that’s uncanny.
