Someone reminded me that J.K. Rowling’s dad’s middle name was James and everything fell into place, so I made a post on another platform that I’m putting here, too:
Me when I’m J.K. Rowling and I name James after my dad (Peter middle name James) who had dark hair and a thin face and wore circular glasses (and kind of looks like my abusive ex-husband who had the same hair shape/color and eye color and face shape and ears and glasses) and sold the signed copies of my books that I had given him when the books got famous enough for them to be worth something, and married his secretary two years after my mom (whom Lily is based on) died…
…and then I base Snape who was in love with Lily (again based on my mom) off of my really cool feminist social justice warrior (as described by friends) Chemistry teacher who was close friends with my mom and built a disabled access restroom into the building she worked in so that she didn’t have to walk to another building because she had multiple sclerosis…
…and then I obsessively dye my hair dark red to emulate the version of my mom that I wrote into my fantasy novels in which my parents actually loved each other and my recently divorced chemistry teacher who I thought threatened their relationship was a cuck (he remarried and was obsessed with his wife. His relationship with J.K. Rowling’s mother was reportedly undoubtably fully platonic).
This is a crazy take but I fuck with it 😭
It’s not even a take. I just said a bunch of stuff that is absolutely and completely true and drew some logical conclusions from those things.
First paragraph: JKR’s dad’s middle name is James. He objectively resembles her abusive ex-husband and canon James Potter (thin face, dark hair, brown or hazel eyes, circular/ovular glasses). Her dad sold the signed Harry Potter books JKR had given to him. He married his secretary not two years after his wife, JKR’s mom, died from complications with chronic illness (the same year JK Rowling was writing The Philosopher’s Stone). Lily is inspired by JKR’s mom and is the quintessential mother figure in JKR’s mind.
Second paragraph: Snape was in love with Lily. Snape was based on JKR’s chemistry teacher. It was extremely obvious to everyone who knew him (to his great chagrin, because he thought he was a nice teacher and was extremely upset that this meant that JKR probably didn’t like him very much), and she admitted it herself (see the third paragraph of the linked essay). He was the head of the science department at JKR’s school, where her mom also worked, because he hired her when no one else was likely to because she was disabled and it was the 1970s. Her mother had multiple sclerosis, and the bathrooms in the science building didn’t have disability access, so the chemistry teacher and head of the science department who had hired her, Mr. John Nettleship, had bathrooms with disability access installed into the building so that JKR’s mother wouldn’t have to walk across campus with her chronic illness that made walking difficult. All of this is stated in the last paragraph of the first section of the linked article.
Third paragraph: JKR is a natural brunette (as can be seen in pictures of her as a child and young adult, MAYBE leaning auburn on a good day depending on lighting, but that’s a reach. My hair is just as red and it’s practically black), but in all pictures of her as an adult after, she has red to dark red or bleached hair. You can see the brown roots growing out in some photos. It’s safe to say that she has an obsession with dying her hair red or blonde. Specifically dark red, like Lily in Harry Potter, who is supposed to reflect JKR’s mother, who was friends with JKR’s chemistry teacher, whom Snape is based on.
Conclusion: Everything I stated was true, apart from a few easily made logical assumptions, such as JKR dying her hair to resemble Lily, based on her mother, and a teenage J.K. Rowling being afraid that her kind, handsome, recently divorced chemistry teacher might steal her mom, his friend, from her mean and emotionally abusive dad who would later sell his own daughter’s signed books and marry his secretary in 1992, not even two full years after the death of his wife, who had only been forty-five. Classic asshole move.
It looks like they’re dropping a teaser trailer for the new Harry Potter reboot tomorrow
Just a few important and gentle reminders:
🫶🏻 DO NOT WATCH THIS FUCKING SHOW 🫶🏻
If you claim you support human rights - not just trans rights but human rights in general - yet still plan to watch this show, unfollow me. You’re a fucking hypocrite and I don’t want you following me.
Do not watch it even if you’re hate watching it, it still contributes to streaming revenue and views!
The adults in this reboot of the franchise are FULLY accountable for choosing to do this show and accepting a pay cheque over supporting a minority group. Even if they claim they support trans rights, they’re cowards and don’t actually support them at all.
The kids do NOT deserve abuse or hate, whether it’s because you’re comparing them to Dan/Rupert/Emma or because you’re boycotting due to the author’s views. They are literal CHILDREN.
Your nostalgia over a children’s series about kids going to school is NOT more important than trans people being respected and having rights. As long as JKR is still alive, she profits off of this.
I love Tonks so much ❤️
I think the conversations about J.K. Rowling and Neil Gaiman on here show that one of the problems on here is that fandom tends to be very all-or-nothing about creators. It's not that I think it's bad that fandoms have completely turned against creators who are bigots and rapists and abusers, I think that's a good thing - though the attitude that "this must be present in everything they've written in some way, so if you hold any attachment to that media you're just as bad!" is not helpful (and kind of anti-intellectual and sets you up poorly for recognizing problematic things in other media with creators who haven't done horrible things, but I've already written that post). But I think one conversation that needs to be had here is how their fandoms treated them like perfect angels who were beyond reproach before the bad things became too big to ignore - including, in both cases, initially denying that those bad things were happening. I think if people were more able to accept that people are nuanced - I'm not going to say it would've stopped either of these people's horrible things and I don't want to victim-blame, but I do think it would make intra-fandom dynamics a lot healthier, and also foster in more of you a much healthier and smarter relationship with the media itself.
Under the cut for ye olde fandom discourse, but also the conclusion of the post (so if you're not interested in hearing me vent about HP discourse from a decade or two ago, just scroll to the last 3-4 paragraphs before the caveats)

When I criticize jk Rowling do not assume I always hated Harry Potter. I knitted hogwarts house scarves. I got my first binder to dress as Draco Malfoy for Halloween. I reread the books multiple times. I read probably every pottermore article there was at the time.
I’m not here to validate your smug feelings about not liking a children’s book series 20 years ago. I’m here to discourage others from spending money on it and to give myself and others words and space to work through some feelings. I’m a trans person that made Harry Potter one of my cornerstone interests. One of my favorite things. I’m not some cis person doing cope.
Harry Potter was a big thing. Like. Big in a way that’s difficult to fully understand. It still is. If you were caught up in it during your formative years it’s normal to need to process all of the horrid things now associated with it.
Having to burn down the house you grew up in is going to be hard even if it turns out that the house was always rotten from the inside out. Even if it turns out that the foundation was made of straw. But the destruction and deconstruction must happen if one hopes to move on and move forward. That’s why I talk about it at all.
Karkaroff pulling his ultimate move and T-posing Snape into a corner after he’s had enough of Snape avoiding him during the Tri-Wizard Tournament.
LMFAO
I binged a lot of Finn Wolfhard's interviews and he just keeps getting settled as my idea of, not only young severus, but especially severus's humor when he is on the elixir to induce euphoria
Finn Wolfhard as a high Severus?
Legit
So severus being happy is equivalent to being high...well seems to fit.
Just wanting to find a way to color without everything looking like it’s too much 🤔 (timelapse video below)

That strange classmate of yours
in the simplified Chinese edition, the "spinner" in "spinner's end" is translated as "spider" rather than "people who make yarn", which always reminds me of Louise Bourgeois' spider sculpture Maman

My take on the Slytherin's uniform, especially in Severus' time at Hogwarts.
