Is not that she failed in giving James a redemption arc…she never even tried.
Homegirl just thew in “he got better btw” and called it a day. That´s the literary equivalent of handing in an assignment you scribbled 5 minutes before class started just so you won´t fail.
James Potter is THAT insignificant a character. He basically exists as a narrative tool in Snape´s redemption arc and as an embelishment in Lily´s tale of motherly sacrifice (which would have been the same had she married anybody else or been a single mother)
James Potter was a rich pureblood jock who harassed and blackmailed women and encouraged, facilitated and committed sexual assault on a kid he didn’t like just because they existed.
She wanted Severus to be the boy who stayed victim, who did nothing while her thug boyfriend and his goons, no different than Crabbes and Goyles, tormented someone for being better, quicker and more intelligent than they were.

Notice how he addresses Lily by her surname instead of her maiden name? Snape accepted the fact that Lily didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. He accepted that she chose to marry J*mes. Despite his justified hatred for the latter Snape respected her decision to be with him.
If Snape truly wanted to bone Lily then he would’ve dipped a Love Potion in her drink and called it a day. But he didn’t. If Snape truly wanted to bone Lily then he would’ve asked Voldemort to giver her to him instead of just asking him to spare her like he canonically did. If Snape truly wanted to bone Lily then he would’ve boned her corpse. But he didn’t. Boning Lily was never his motivation.
Guilt over inadvertently causing Lily’s death is Snape’s primary drive for his atonement but it’s not the only drive. He learnt his mistake. He transitioned from a Selfish, Bigoted Douchebag to a Selfless Douchebag.
correct me if i'm wrong, but hogwarts was originally built to be a safe haven for the wizarding community because they were being persecuted by muggles.
so was salazar slytherin actually wrong for not wanting muggle-born children to enter their world, considering the climate at the time? if wizards were genuinely in danger and had to create their own space to be safe, it's not that crazy to understand why he'd see it as a risk to his community.
it's also not that crazy to understand why he might not want any muggle-born child in his house either, because after spending years building a safe haven, he probably didn't want to be responsible for bringing in children whose muggle families could unintentionally become a security risk.
(and just to be clear, when i say "risk," i don't mean the kids themselves. i mean their muggle parents or families, who would obviously be involved in their lives that could put the wizarding world in danger.)

It really super doesn't matter how trans you are, saying that as an excuse to support jkr throws every other trans person who had to abandon a love for a formative series under the bus. It sucks hard, but it's necessary. It doesn't matter how important this series was to you, it's actively and directly harmful to create content for her. There's no ethical way to engage with harry potter. You need to find another book.

Something isn't only right if it fits EXACTLY your morality. Shades of grey exist, critical thinking is required to understand them.
I can absolutely "find another book". I have plenty of books I adore. Queer people are not benefitting from me writing and making art about queer representation in those fandoms, though. It would be pointless to try to include queer people in spaces that are ALREADY queer inclusive.
You think historically queer people managed to obtain what they did by pushing away and ignoring every space that wasn't theirs? They did not. You fight for your place into the world, into any world, even if it's just an online space.
The Harry Potter fandom will NEVER die, no matter what we do. I spend my free time creating queer representation (without giving jkr a penny btw) in an environment that is becoming less and less welcoming BECAUSE queer people are avoiding it.
You know what that means? Not only that old queer fans that can't let go of the saga will feel less and less welcome and safe in the online community. It also means that the new queer generation that will INEVITABLY grow up with the show and interact with the fandom online, will most likely find an intolerant community. Add that to the fact that jkr will surely try to push all sort of bigoted things into their brain with the new series.
Do you think letting something as powerful as the Harry Potter franchise exist WITHOUT queer people in it will do anything good? Cool. Keep doing your thing. Stay out of it.

10 things about Severus Snape’s portrayal in fics that I don't particularly like
(Which means I still fully support you using them, but I simply don't use them in my fics)
1. When he's "big and strong"
Severus Snape is not big and strong in the canon.
He's repeatedly described as thin, almost the sick kind of thin, and rather short. Not too short, but short enough for Sirius to be remarkably taller.
Yeah, I know Alan Rickman doesn't exactly fit this description, as much as l love him. I simply like books Severus more.
2. When he’s a “macho” or a “daddy”
No slut shaming. You do you.
As a media analyst though... Severus is kinda queer coded. The Marauders called him "Snivellus" because he cried a lot (from "snivelling"). Basically because he was a sensitive boy. During a huge part of HBP (book) plot they suggest that the Half Blood Prince may be a woman because of how he writes in Advanced Potions. Also his father was a toxic macho man. I personally can't see him becoming something he hated so much.
3. When he flirts a lot
Now... I'm not saying he's COMPLETELY inexperienced...
(Even though he is in my fics, because he lost every desire to be experienced after Lily's death)
I just can't see him flirting.
The man who looked like he could throw up at any given moment during the Yule Ball? Don't think so…
4. When he's too calm and composed
This is debatable, because he actually is in the movies. They didn't include one of my favourite chapters in POA, "Snape's Grudge", as well as many other scenes from the books in which he's an absolute menace (honorific).

5. When he's completely apathetic
Doesn't happen as often as the other things, but sometimes it does.
Severus is not apathetic.
He's written just like any other INTJ character. He feels a lot, possibly more than anyone else. He's just learned that he can't show it, due to trauma, and due to nature. If the fic is written in his pov, like mines, you have the chance to give a glimpse into his inner self. He feels. He just doesn't accept he's feeling.
6. When he's overly serious
He doesn't joke, he doesn't prank, of course. He's not exactly the life of the party...
But damn my man was funny af.
"You have to kill me, Severus."
"Would you like me to do it now? Or would you like a few moments to compose an epitaph?"
Like come oooon
7. When he suddenly becomes a joy to be around
Specifically in post-war fics.
I understand that he doesn't need to be under cover anymore, and yes, maybe he'd get SLIGHTLY less depressed, but... he's got trauma and 38 miserable years behind him. I don't find it realistic that he's suddenly happy as soon as he wakes up after surviving.
8. When he's portrayed as a hero/as a good person
Please, as the Snape fandom, let's not lie to ourselves. He enjoyed being cruel to the students, especially in the books. He liked it in a kind of sadistic way. And that's okay, he's a fictional character, we can enjoy him anyway. It's part of his charm.
9. When he's handsome
Similar to the "big and strong" one, but not quite the same.
I don't like when he's described as pretty. When the fic explicitly states that his hair is groomed, or that he has muscles, or that he smells like wood and musk, or whatever.
My man is obviously written to have PTSD. As someone who has PTSD... I find it more plausible he barely takes care of himself. He canonically has greasy hair, uneven yellow teeth and people hint at the fact that he's not exactly a fan of showers.
And yes, I like it. I LOVE it.

10. When he hates for no reason
Don't get me wrong. He's a hater. He's the biggest hater.
But he hates with critical thinking. He's quite possibly the cleverest character of the saga. Even if he hates someone for unjustifiable reasons (like with Harry) he needs to rationalise his hatred (stating that it's because Harry constantly gets into trouble and lying to himself).
