You mentioned that you would like having a case in the court to defend someone like Severus against what the maradeurs did. And that you would do it, even if these rich folks tried to do something against you. That made me curious... Has that ever happened to you? I'm sure it happens all the time to lawyers, but have you ever been personally threatened? Like, someone tried to hurt you in some way because of your job?
No, I mean, itās not something that normally happens. Unless, I donāt know, the people involved actually want things to escalate into legal consequences. Because obviously, if you threaten a defense lawyer while theyāre handling a case or a trial, thatās not exactly going to work in your favor.
Iāve had my share of conflicts. Iāve been advised to settle cases before, and Iāve refused because Iām incredibly stubborn when it comes to my job. I have a problem: I really, really like being right. And if I genuinely think Iām right, Iāll fight it all the way to the end. That has definitely gotten me into a few disputes over the years. But actual threats? Not really.
Although, honestly, I think it would be hilarious to take on one of those child bullying cases, go all in, and have the wealthy parents threaten me. I genuinely think that would be iconic. I have this weird view of life where I believe everyone should have a bucket list of bizarre experiences before they die. I donāt know, like sleeping with a priest, getting threatened by a rich family promising to ruin your life⦠those are the kind of ridiculous experiences Iād find funny to tick off the list before I die. It would genuinely amuse me.
That said, itās not actually common for some ultra-rich-type family to show up and threaten to break your legs. What usually happens is much less dramatic: they offer way more money than you or your client originally asked for. They negotiate. Sometimes they offer things besides money, too, just to make the problem disappear.
Iāve never believed in that approach. I want the compensation and I want to win the case so the person ends up with a criminal record. Thereās something deeply satisfying about seeing people with enormous privilege actually face legal consequences for violent crimes. Even if they donāt end up in juvenile detention, I think itās important that thereās an official record showing they were convicted. Otherwise, if wealthy parents can just pay settlements every time their kids commit crimes, those kids never learn the lesson they need to learn, that being rich and coming from a āgood familyā doesnāt exempt you from the consequences of your actions.
So in a case like that, Iād go for everything: the conviction and the money. And if the family wanted to threaten me afterward⦠well, weād see how that went. Rich people donāt intimidate me because I also know people with influence. Everyone has cards they can play if they decide to. Thatās why Iāve always believed you should understand your opponent before you make them your enemy, know what theyāre actually capable of.
