here's an idea i got at the city pool today. no idea where it's going
"You should let me take you out to dinner," she says, quickly holding up one hand and taking out her phone with the other. Buck takes back most of the step he took away from her in order to view her screen. It's a selfie, that she didn't take because in it she's asleep, turned safe and trusting into the chest of a man smiling like he found a four-leaf clover.
"Huh," he says, eloquently.
"Jerome is adjunct professor." She stows the phone in her tiny bag with a few crisp movements, always so efficient. "He radicalizes community organizers, social workers, and human rights lawyers. On our second date I had to bail him out after getting taken in for a protest."
"Ethical," she finishes, smiling wickedly. "Don't pretend that's not the word that came to mind. It's okay. Years have gone by since we last ripped each other's clothes off. There's no need to spare my feelings anymore. So, dinner?"
Nothing in her demeanor reminds him of Jade, and her boyfriend, blonde and tan with brown eyes, does not resemble Zane in the slightest, but he can't hold back a wince.
She barks out a laugh, wide-eyed. "Just dinner, I swear. Maybe a few glasses of wine. What kind of life have you been living, Evan Buckley?"
For a little bit in there, he wasn't living at all. "I died," he blurts out, wrong-footed as he forever is with this woman. "For a c-couple minutes. And I fell in love with a man. And- And there was a helicopter chase because of a v-" He clamps his mouth shut. She wrote a book about him and his family. I- I just-"
Her hand, just as diminutive as the bag, covers his forearm. "Relax, big guy. I'm off the 118 beat."
"Yeah," she says, shoving him a little. "ProPublica doesn't care about one team of firefighters. I take on bastards with white collars now."
"Rich guys!" Her grin is wide and fond. "God, you have not changed. Seriously, can we break bread together? You and Jerome will be instant besties. He'll have so many facts for you to get all agog and outraged about."
