Something is missing from the debate over educationally suitable literature
āSo let me get this straight. Weāre here to rescue a princess.ā
āThatās right.ā
āAt the request of a princess.ā
āRight again.ā
āAnd you, who will be leading the expedition, are also a princess.ā
āYouāre very perceptive.ā
āHow big is your royal family, again?ā
āWe donāt have one.ā
āButāā
āWe overthrew our monarchy centuries ago, but we kept most of the titles around. The rank of āprincessā is held by the directors in charge of various civil service branches.ā
āHuh. And the princess weāre rescuing today is in charge ofā¦?ā
āPublic sanitation.ā
āThe Lord of Deathās Dominion kidnapped your public sanitation director?ā
āWe think heās a little confused.ā
I laughed too hard not to reblog this.
I mean. If your goal is to cause maximum death, letting trash, sewage, tainted water, and biohazardous waste pile up in a populated area with zero oversight is a pretty efficient way to go about it
See, the idea that taking out the appointed head of the government department in charge of public sanitation oversight would cause the day-to-day business of public sanitation to immediately cease is exactly the sort of confusion weāre talking about here.
Games from older consoles are being made less and less available to the point so much of the industry's history could easily vanish without
Preserving classic videogames from consoles past.
I'm just gonna slide this on in here for anyone that is interested in preserving old games. They take it very seriously too, they want an archive of every single game. Like, they have lists of every game ever released for a system, and once that system gets old enough, they add it to their archive and start collecting. Their latest addition was the Xbox 360, they opened that vault up in September 2022, and proudly announced they'd finished their collection of games for it back in April.
Also, while their game archives are almost entirely complete, they've got another project of archiving the manuals that came with those games, and that is... considerably less well filled out. Their collection of Xbox 360 manuals is especially rough, they've only gotten manuals for three games. So if you've got some Xbox 360 games kicking around, and the manual's still with them, please consider scanning them and submitting them to the site!
Game preservation is important, but people rarely consider preserving the manuals as well; I really respect Vimm's Lair for being so thorough in their archival work.
I've been using Vimm's Lair for years, I have yet to see a single bad link or virus on the entire site. It's arguably the safest and most comprehensive archive of video games in existence. Preserved history
God I love how normal and real everyone looks in Widow's Bay.
No painfully obvious plastic surgery, no blur filters, no uncanny white veneers.
Just regular looking people with wrinkles and gray hair and frumpy clothes

Reblog if youāre 30 or older
This is an experiment to see if there really are as few of us as people think. You can also use this to freak out your followers who think youāre 25 or something. Yay!
This month people have been tearing Flock cameras off their poles.
This month people have been tearing Flock cameras off their poles. Perched above public streets, they are birdlike things, weatherproof, and they photograph every passing car and file it in a searchable national database. Somebody cut two of them in half at Washington Avenue and Westcott in Houston, spray-painted the wreckage, and left an American flag on one of them. Police were notified on the morning of the Fourth of July. Somebody severed a camera in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. The police department posted the photograph itself and collected more than twenty thousand comments. āNot all heroes wear capes.ā āGive them a medal.ā Here is what the cameras do when nobody cuts them down. Cops use them to hunt immigrants and to follow ICE targets across state lines and to find women who ended pregnancies in states where that is a crime and to watch exes and to watch women they want, without a warrant and without a judge. A cop types a reason in a box and the box does not check. A man in Burleson, Texas, told deputies his girlfriend had taken abortion pills. He showed them the photographs, the FedEx envelope, the instructions. Deputies opened a death investigation into a non-viable fetus, and the district attorney told them the state could not charge her, and they searched anyway: 83,345 cameras across 6,809 networks, a month of everywhere she had been. The reason they typed was had an abortion, search for female. The search reached Illinois and Washington, where what she did was legal. They found her in Dallas. She came into the sheriffās office a week later, and they thought she had come to explain the fetus, and she had come to report that the man who called them had put a gun to her head. A sheriff in Jerome County, Idaho ran his wifeās plate more than seven hundred times in three months. He typed the same reason every time. Test. The attorney general found nothing to charge him with. He retired in April. The Institute for Justice counts at least twenty-two officers who used the system to track people they were romantically interested in, and calls that almost certainly an undercount. And the cameras keep falling.
Become ungovernable.
I think a pet deposit is stupid but at least its a stupid I can understand you know. like sure a pet could cause more damage so extra "in case of damage" money is owed. whatever. at least I have a chance of getting it back. but pet rent is bonkers crazy. like no the amount of rent thats due is what the rent is. my cat isn't like raising property tax. normal rent isn't even calculated by number of people living in the house. you can't raise the rent when an extra person moves in. what. "pet rent". what the hell are you talking about. you sound insane. its a bunny rabbit
āspicy pillowā jokes aside, I think @flowerkroneāās tags deserve a serious reply:
#my old phone looks like this on my shelf lmao #im too scared to touch it to throw it away #idk what trash this even goes into when its at this point
The pillow-shaped object here used to be the phoneās battery. Itās not a battery anymore. Now itās a balloon full of corrosive, pyrophoric chemicals and hydrogen gas and itās one puncture away from burning your house down. I am 100% serious. You should be scared to touch it.
But you gotta touch it, because you gotta get it out of your house before the pressure builds up to the point where the balloon pops. This isnāt going to happen soon ā there is no need to panic ā but it will happen eventually.
And, indeed, it doesnāt go in the ordinary trash. You put this in the ordinary trash and youāre gonna set the garbage truck on fire. Donāt do that to the garbage collectors, their job is hard enough already.
The first thing you need to do is get a fireproof container. The most common household item that qualifies as a fireproof container is a cast-iron cookpot with a cast-iron lid ā often sold as a āDutch oven.ā Any other cooking container thatās unreactive, has a very high melting point, and has a lid made of the same materials will also work: enameled or stainless steel, Pyrex with glass lid, etc.
However: Do not use a pot with a PTFE-based non-stick coating. If the battery does explode, the fire will probably be hot enough to degrade a PTFE coating, producing toxic smoke. (Not that you should breathe the smoke from the battery fire either, but PTFE breakdown products are worse.) Do not use a pot made of aluminium or copper. The fire might even get hot enough to melt those.
Whatever container you use, you might have to throw away along with the phone, so donāt use your good Dutch oven for this. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap one.
Once you have the fireproof container:
Gently pick up the phone and put it in the fireproof container. If possible, gently tape the phone to the bottom of the container to prevent it from bouncing around. Donāt put any padding in there, thatāll just make a fire worse if it does happen. Put the lid on and tape it shut.
Put a label on the container, something like āDEFECTIVE LI-ION BATTERY ā FIRE HAZARDā.
It is now reasonably safe to move the container around. However, if the battery does explode, the container is very likely to leak smoke and get hot, so keep it in a well-ventilated area and away from things that will be damaged by heat. Donāt leave it exposed to the weather, either.
You need toĀ find either a hazardous waste disposal site, or an e-waste recycler that will accept defective Li-ion batteries. I canāt help with that because I have no idea where you live.
However, your local fire department, if you have one, will probably be happy to help. Call their non-emergency number. Nothing is on fire yet, so this isnāt an emergency, but things that can easily start a fire are still within the fire departmentās responsibilities. Tell them you have a phone with a bulging lithium-ion battery, you put it in a fireproof container, and you want to know how to dispose of it safely.
If the fire department tries to tell you this isnāt dangerous or itās okay to throw it out in the regular trash (with or without fireproof container), hang up on them and write a cranky letter to your local government representatives, then keep looking for a proper disposal site.
When you do find a a hazardous waste disposal site or an e-waste recycler, call them and make sure they will take defective Li-ion batteries, before showing up. Thatās also a good time to ask if they will let you have the fireproof container back.
Reblog to save lives.

Reblogging because I would have had absolutely no idea what to do, either.
My personal headcanon for Ash Ketchum has always been that regardless of if his dream ever came true he'd never truly stop traveling and learning. Because despite "becoming a pokemon master" being his goal if you actually sit down and watch like Any episode of Pokemon the thing that always holds true is his curiosity and desire to learn everything he possibly can related to pokemon. And he'll try anything to! He did contests and the battle frontier. He'd do those silly little shows with Serena if they'd let him.
So I like to imagine him continuing on in life as this nomad who people don't automatically recognize as anyone important ya know? Just this goofy guy going from place to place always lending a helping hand and hes got a cute lil pikachu on him. And hes often lost somewhere with a friend just exploring the woods to see if he'll find anything cool. Ya know, as hes always been, but older now. And its only once hes drifted once more do you maybe stumble into an article on the pokeweb about him and are like... that guy??
thereās a dedicated ashandpikachuspotter account somewhere on some social media. You tag a photo or search for a term and boom, thereās pics of this guy. this dude. this man. with his pikachu. and itās thousands of strangers from across the globe coming on line to talk about some stranger that they met briefly and then never saw again. theyāve compiled their stories and their approximate locations and mapped his journey from continent to continent, a long snaking pathway that spans decades and thousands of miles. Heās apparently one of those Kanto kids that the government let just drop out of school. Its working out very well for him.Ā
Thats so funny, to imagine him as a pokeweb criptid type character a la the florida man
the one thing about him is he's also not gonna think he's famous or ever mention it himself

No context spoilers for Fabulous Bodies by Chuck Tingle
Being an adult will have you unironically craving a vegetable
Being an adult will have you unironically sad about a parasite outbreak in fresh vegetables.
So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.
I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.
Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.
So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.
Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in anĀ upcoming design promotion.
Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming šµāš«
Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.
Anyways, if you want to print the wheel guards yourself, you can get the model here or here.
I also made a quiet version you can stick furniture felt pads on.
People love simple, extremely practical things. I hope you win!
itās not weird to find fanfiction from 2021, or 2017, or 2014 that youāve never read and actually taking your time to read it.
itās not weird to love it and comment and leave kudos because the author will probably still see it someday and it will make them happy.
itās not weird to like said authorās work so much that you want to go look for other fics from them.
itās not weird to go through the authors profile and look for other fics from the ships you like (or maybe some that youāll give a chance because you liked the author) and maybe bookmark them for later.
itās not weird to read these other fics and like them too and comment on them because you actually like them and you want to let the author know.
itās not weird to read fanfiction from 5, or 8, or 10 years ago and actually enjoy and engage with it because itās perfectly normal to relate to something thatās less than a decade old!
letās stop treating fanfiction like theyāre instagram posts that stop being interesting in 24 hours! fanfiction is NOT social media, fanfiction is art!!! and art doesnāt get old in one day, one year, or even a decade!
read fanfiction! write fanfiction! comment on fanfiction! letās not let fanculture die people!!!!!
Not only is it not weird, it is ACTIVELY ENCOURAGED. Authors LOVE IT when people do this!!! Its not "weird" and its not "neutral" -- its a fucking DELIGHT. Feel very absolutely free to read though an author's entire back catalogue, leaving kudos and/or comments along the way; we absolutely freaking love when someone does this. There is nothing more joyful than getting a comment notification for an old fic. It will make our day, I promise.
There needs to be a special word for the warm, gratifying feeling that you get when you watch someone kudos everything you've ever written in a specific fandom in backwards order over 3 days. and that word needs a modifier to express the inexpressible joy when they start leaving comments on every story no matter how old it is.
In a sense, it doesnāt matter how ridiculous it sounds to think Pepsi would genuinely honour that. Pepsi said that they would, therefore they have to, or else theyāre guilty of false advertising. Companies canāt be allowed to say whatever they want in adverts, and when asked to pony up pull āit was just a joke, broā. To use a slightly less ridiculous example, Fallout 76. One of the preorder editions can with a canvas backpack. But when they finally shipped, the durable canvas backpacks somehow became flimsy nylon. Complaints to publisher Bethesda got the response that the canvas version advertised was a prototype that was too expensive to make, so they handed out the cheap imitations instead. It took like two years in the courts for Bethesda to give people what they actually pay for. And they won because advertising law says you have to deliver on what you promise, even if itās a Harrier jet. Introducing any level of āitās just a jokeā makes that effectively meaningless.
