Counter point, those machines can make me a peach sprite.
guys did you know the tech in that nefangled machine revolutionized preemie healthcare
yeah the guy who invented them made incredibly precise infusion pumps (as opposed to gravity fed ivs) which not only meant they could give medications to teeny tiny babies safely, it's also used for insulin pumps and portable dialysis machines. the key element is that it's a peristaltic pump so the liquid stays in sterile tubing for safety
(unholy drink cloaca uses it to dispense precise amounts of flavored sugar syrup)
Then how the haters loved him,
As they shouted out with glee,
"Unholy Drink Cloaca
You'll go down in history!"

a sore throat is the dumbest immune system response ever. like oh yeah, there's a germ! gotta defend the body against it! let's make it unbearably painful to eat and drink, two of the most necessary things for survival!
Thinking about fate in Beowulf and Lord of the Rings. How it involves taking a pagan concept of fate and applying Christianity to it. You're not a slave to a cruel and merciless universe, but your fate is still outside of your control. Your fate is now in the hands of an all-knowing, all powerful God. And knowing that, you still have to make good choices.
So now, sometimes you meet your fate, not because you can't see it coming, or because you can't escape it, but because you have to choose it. You know this course of action will lead to your death, but you can make no other choice--morality, virtue, honor, decency, dignity, and God all say that you have a duty to do the right thing, no matter what it costs you. You have to meet your fate with your eyes wide open, understanding that no man can live forever, but you can live as God wants you to live, and trust that you'll die when it's your proper time.
And this leaves open the door for hope. Instead of the tragedy of trying to escape fate and failing, the story can be about submitting to fate and being saved. Not always. Sometimes the story is that you meet your fate, but you died doing the right thing. But sometimes, refusing to take the selfish action, refusing to run means that something beyond the expectations of human reality can intervene and save you. Either way, you end the story as a hero, instead of as a victim or a villain.
I'm thinking about this again after rereading Revenge of the Sith, because when Palpatine tells Anakin about Sith defying fate vs. Jedi submitting to fate, you'd better believe that this post came to mind. It shows why the Jedi way is the right way. "Let go of attachments" is not saying, "Become an emotionless husk who doesn't care about anything bad that happens." It's, "Recognize that there are some things worse than losing someone."
You can't be willing to do anything to save people, because that means you might do things like murder dozens of children to save one woman. There has to be a line that you will not cross, no matter what, even if it's to save yourself or someone you love. You can't rely on your own power to save everyone. Even if doing the right thing seems to lead to destruction, you have to do the right thing. Submitting to fate isn't about giving up, it's about having hope. It's about refusing to do wrong and leaving open the possibility that something beyond everyday reality could save you in ways you couldn't possibly imagine. And even if you aren't saved, you haven't added to the darkness.
A frustrating part of the mainstream vegan “love all animals and protect the environment” mindset is the fact that things need to die in real-life ecology all the time but deer hunting season makes icky feelings and carp culls aren’t cottagecore
The vegan “any animal death ever is morally wrong” mindset doesn’t hold up when:
We don’t have any of the large predators we used to (black bears, mountain lions, or gray wolves) but still retain large deer populations. If nothing is removing animals, they’ll quickly overload the carrying capacity of the environment and have massive losses to starvation and disease that can also pass on to livestock. Human hunters replace the large predators that our landscape can no longer support.
It’s kinder to euthanize an un-releasable hawk rather than try to find it a permanent home with humans. Wildlife rehabs have extremely limited space and resources and are usually run entirely on donated money and volunteer time. Only a few are large and stable enough to care for permanent residents long-term, and those spots are few and far between.
An invasive species poses a danger to threatened native wildlife. I will admit- Australian possums are adorable. But not in New Zealand, where they’re an invasive species that eats the eggs of ground-dwelling birds that previously had no such predators. The landowners I worked with replanting native bush, all native Maori, had no qualms about setting the dogs on them.
I don’t know how to end this except. Sometimes things just gotta die and acting otherwise just isn’t a realistic expectation.
Highlights from the notes over the past 6 months include a lot of angry vegans saying “you’re blowing things out of proportion, no vegans actually think like this!” and a lot of people who work in conservation and education saying “Every day. I have to fight people who think like this.”
As a bonus this post was originally inspired by the vegan who called me racist for saying we should kill invasive species
Die temu ad die
Hmm. Accidentally looks like latin.
It accidentally is latin
Accidental latin is my new favourite thing.
Found this in the margins of a medieval manuscript.
This is a very charming illustration and I do approve of Accidental Latin, but unfortunately, that is not what this (Fake) Accidental Latin actually says. Google Translate seems to think "temu" is identical to "timor" (infinitive, "to fear"), which would then be conjugated in first-person singular as "timeo" ("I fear"). "Temu" is not a word in Latin. So that is a very weird leap on Google Translate's part to turn gibberish into... something vaguely etymologically similar sounding? Hmm.
Next, "die" does mean "day," though nominative singular is "dies," i.e. "dies irae." It could be conjugated "die" if it was in ablative or locative case, but "die ad die" would mean something more like "day to day." "Ad" is in a "to" direction and "ab" is from, i.e. "ab urbis," and ablative case is used to indicate the movement of a thing. In short, "by" is not really a way to translate "ad"; we might want "per" here? (Through, by means of, etc.)
Not to mention, it would be weird to put one "die" at the start and another at the end The verb also usually goes at the end in Latin sentences, just for that extra bit of fun. So yes, in short, this is not actually Latin, and Google Translate is very bad at Latin in particular. Nonetheless, still charming.
@theshitpostcalligrapher
Agree, @qqueenofhades, except on the matter of breaking “die ad die” apart. It’s a common structure in poetic and oratorical Latin to jam one phrase in the middle of another. I can’t think of an example exactly parallel to this construction, but I could believe a Roman poet would write it!
Ah, that is true. My Latin is of the reading-medieval-documents (particularly charters and/or chronicles) variety, where the sentence and usage structures are often more formulaic and there is less poetic license to move words around. There is obviously far less fixity for word order in Latin, since the conjugations explain how they grammatically relate to each other rather than placement in the sentence. (Coincidentally, this is why I used to say that the best feeling in the world was walking past a Latin classroom and not having to go inside it. Ahem.)
So yes: true that poetical Latin might be more at liberty to split the "die"-s up that far, though "timeo" (verb) is still more likely in most cases to go at the end, which would place them together anyway ("die ad die timeo," "day to day I fear" if translated in strict word order, which would make sense to an English speaker and sound more poetic anyway). Keep in mind, however, that my Latin is a) fairly rusty and b) mostly used for said formulaic legal document reading rather than freeform verse, so don't super-hard quote me on this.
I saw that ablative “die” and that final -u on “temu” and thought of the ablative supine (as in “mirabile dictu”) but as you observe, there isn’t a verb that “temu” could be, and then also, the ablative supine requires an adjective, as far as I know.
But perhaps “temu” is a hapax legomenon (in which case we would need the rest of the text to gloss it) or a scribal error for temeratu, from temero, “I defile or disgrace”. In that case, and in true Tumblr form, I might translate it as “daily I disgrace, in the manner of the day”, with some errors attributable to the scribe.
....oh my god. You might be a genius. Because what else does Tumblr do but daily disgrace [itself, oneself, and/or numerous others] in the manner of the day, and make numerous scribal errors.
how dare you say we error on the scribes
this is what happens when you buy your latin on temu
Loving pink and hyper-girly/hyper-feminine things these days is rough because you end up encountering (and sometimes following) either the R@dfem "Toxic Hello Kitty Girls" who brag about controlling and abusing men (🚩🚩🚩🤮) or the Conservative "Pick Me" girls who talk about serving and honoring your husband and father (🤮).
Where are my girly-girls with basic human decency and sense?? 😭

Tumblr's guide to religion
Christianity- evil white people probably republicans
Judaism - rich privileged white people all support Israel secretly rule world
Islam- perfect religion beyond all criticism
What about Hinduism, Buddhism, Shintoism, Zoroastrianism, and all those numerous pagan religions? What does Tumblr say about them?
Hinduism/Buddhism: Brown people religion/aesthetic that must be appropriation if a light skinned person does it. I get the impression that many people can’t tell the difference between them and they get lumped together frequently.
Shintoism: anime thing. I’m not sure if it actually registers as a religion, but then, I’m not sure if it actually registers as a religion in Japan either.
Zoroastrianism: wha? Seriously though, does anybody who is not currently taking a Comparative Religions class know that Zoroastrianism exists?
Paganism: either sweet precious cinnamon rolls or Nazis. No in-between.

I tried a different style than what I usually do! I normally render a lot, but this time I went for flatter colors.
I kept the linework messy and unpolished because I wanted it to feel more organic and loose.
Trying different styles like this helps me grow and understand my creative process better, even when I don't understand what I'm doing most of the time.
if u call urself a misandrist I'm going to assume ur homophobic. I'm gonna assume that ur at the very least weird about trans women like me, that you're going to judge them based on how they pass, on how out they are, on what level of transition they are at. I'm gonna assume ur racist too. like. idk "misandry" very feels like the sorta "feminism" someone is really into when they're in high school and carefully making sure to never think about anything.
why does sequential art require you to make multiple images? does anybody understand this?
