Trying to convince people to play Return of the Obra Dinn but unfortunately my opening with the line “you are an insurance investigator” isn’t exactly whipping people into a frenzy
As a student, I was terrified of those crab riders. So much so that I couldn't sleep at night x)) But I also wanted to draw one. After who knows how long, I finally got around to it
Inspector...?
Here is an excellent video essay on the fandom's reaction to S3 revealing that Lestat "the abuser" is a victim of abuse himself, the claims that this is an attempt to erase his abuse of Louis and Claudia or excuse it, and a general unwillingness to acknowledge that these two things can be true at once (I.e. fans really wish to put every character into the box of hero or villain, and their uncomfortableness when this is challenged).
Watching this I was actually reminded somewhat of my relationship with my mother. I wouldn't call it abusive, but my mother had a lot of problematic behaviours, some of which I didn't even realise until I was an adult and discussing them with other people. My mother in turn had many awful things happen to her in her life.
Her life experience was the *REASON* she behaved the way she did, but it did not *EXCUSE* it. I could have empathy with her and what she had gone through, whilst also choosing to go no contact for the sake of my own mental health.
Anyway without getting too personal here is the video, it's an excellent and thought provoking watch if you're into long-form content, and I plan to watch more from this creator.
TW: it goes without saying this video contains in depth detailed discussions of rape and other forms of abuse.
I do have a fondness for how gothic and erotic lit had a certain barrier to entry. Like I do love more ppl getting into the vampire chronicles and I'll always be happy to have more Loustat fans but those books are weird and melancholic and erotic and philosophical and constantly testing boundaries and asking questions. And it feels like ppl are expecting or wanting "the vampire diaries but gay". The books have uncomfortable moments and the characters will do and say and believe things that make you double take but so much of the books are just "how moral can I be when nothing matters and I'm immortal?"
This isn't just a tale of gay vampires. It's a haunting philosophical treatise about life, mortality, morality, death, depression, incest, rape, love, regret, and the Pain Of Time. It can be fun and it can be gross and it can be wonderful but it's not for the timid.

the writers did so fucking well at portraying and deconstructing the over abundant amount that lestat in the text romanticizes his abusers. he calls it the "seduction of magnus" multiple times throughout the vampire chronicles instead of admitting he was preyed upon. when you read the books you have to look between the lines of his flowery prose and avoidance but the show took a corny over the top music video style approach and then slammed it next to a full blown ptsd flashback to make sure the audience did not have a chance to misinterpret or mock anything and i respect them for that
Op, the tags deserve to be here too!
living under a rock is so fun i love watching a movie that’s been famous for decades and being like wow this is so good.. did you guys know about this
really struck by how claudia grieving madeleine seems to be the thing that gets most to lestat during the seance. he only starts to cry when claudia tells them that she can’t find her companion, that’s she’s been alone this entire time. and of course this is what would get to him. the thing he fears the most is loneliness. so knowing that his daughter found a companion only to lose her again in death. it’s devastating
I miss when ads were a single click and then they’re gone. Now every ad has a minimum of three phases where you watch a video, exit the still frame of fake gameplay, and then exit the app download. That doesn’t even touch on the ones that forcibly take you to another app after opening a tab in safari without you ever touching the screen.
I hate advertising. I hate that you can’t do anything without companies jumping down your throat with mostly bullshit ads. I hate that billboards exist. I hate that every company unanimously decided to make their ads longer and longer. I hate that ad blockers try to charge you money and there are in app purchases to remove ads. I hate that my attention has become commodified. I hate that there’s nothing I can do about it.
Actually relentlessly thinking about Lestat and Louis' total acceptance of Claudia's fury and grief as one of the realest acts of love we've seen on this show. So much of this story has been about chasing the idea of her and making her something palatable or twisting her to fit their lives or their memories or making others wear the costume of her, and none of it works, because none of it is her. They render her a slip of life, when she was a full bodied, full spirited woman, and no song or doppelganger can ever truly capture her.
The beat where Claudia knocks Merrick forwards, knocks out her front tooth, and both Louis and Lestat lean forwards, lean into it - - it's a heartstopper, because they know, we know, it's actually her. The killer down in New Orleans who clogged the Mississippi with corpses, the girl who slit one of her fathers' throats, who wore the ring of his mistress, who goaded her other father to Europe and nearly left him in No Man's Land, who ridiculed him long, long before this episode (and in similar terms). This fanged and ruthless woman who they love enough to welcome at her worst. They don't want her filed down, they want the spark in the dark, in her eyes as Louis said two episodes ago.
Claudia's anger makes her real to them, and no door closes here. The circle's broken. They want her back, they're gonna have her back, and the undercurrent of this episode to me is that Louis and Lestat actually won't be mad about that because they really do fucking love her. They love and miss the worst parts of her, not just the best, and now that's what they'd bring forwards to the point they won't let her rest. They will have her miserable and as a malevolent spirit and they will call her daughter regardless, and none of her fury will ever actually matter so long as they can throw their heads back and laugh and commiserate with one another about her because they do love her, but they love her second to each other.

THE VAMPIRE LESTAT "Montreal"
Now that the episode is out, can I just say something that's been bothering me about this season? I think the writers are too terminally online, or at least someone in the staff is, because some of the things this season feel like replies to the fandom and the discourse.
The best the writers can do is ignore social media and just do their thing. Just focus on their vision. Acknowledging this or that fandom discourse is pointless because those people won't change their mind and the majority of their audience doesn't know about what iwtvtwt or tumblr is whining about this week and doesn't care.
... not an ounce of self-awareness in some of you.
I don't mean that in any ill way to you particularly, but please, for the love of god, think about all the commentary this show has done before, about how they comment on REAL LIFE ISSUES and then think about what has been said about the writers, the cast and the crew, and that WE KNOW THAT THEY KNOW and how it affected Sam, who has spoken about it, and how the writers abandoned their Twitter account, how they had extra security at SDCC because of the shit some pulled and how allllll that fandom SHIT SHOW IMPACTED THEM IN REAL LIFE.
Like, seriously.
This season deals with someone being used and abused constantly, and people only see him as an object, not as a someone to see beyond the cardboard villain or sex object to use or insult as they see fit.
