âWhatâs got you down, Mon Chaton?â Ladybug says, kicking out her legs from the strut of the Eiffel Tower that theyâre sitting on and holding her feet against the Paris skyline. âWe did good today. Akuma went down, nobody was hurt, no property damageââ
âYeah,â Chat says, curling up, holding his knees against his chest. âAnd I nearly killed you again.â
Ladybug halts, holds her feet up for another few seconds, then lets them drop. âYeah, you did,â she says. Heâd been brainwashed by the Akuma again, and sheâd had to fight both of them at once. She gently lays her palm on the steel toes of his boots, rubbing with a small smile. âYou took a hit for me, and we made it out okay.â
âOh, Chaton,â she murmurs, scooting over toward him and leaning her side onto his shins, reaching up toward his face. To hold him. To caress him. Toâ
He pulls away, and she can see that his face under the mask has gone splotchy red. âCarapace wouldnât have turned,â he says, quietly.
Ladybug raises an eyebrow. âWhat?â
Chat holds up a clawâhis Cataclysm hand. âIâve beenâI donât know why Fu picked me,â he says. âIâm supposed to defend you, butâŚâ
âBut nothing,â she says, squeezing his bicep. âYou do defend me.â
âReally?â Chat snaps. âBetter than the guy who actually has the power of defense?â
âChatonâŚâ she murmurs, her eyes narrowing. âWhere is this coming from?â
He bites his lip, refusing to meet her eyes. âI⌠thought it was just the two of us,â he says. âAt first. It made sense to send us both out.â He closes his eyes, blowing air out through his nose. âBut thereâs so many other Miraculi. And⌠I justâŚâ He swallows. âWhy didnât Fu send out the Turtle to begin with?â he says. âOr the Monkey?â He flexes his fingers, looks down at his claw. âTheyâre actually useful against Hawkmoth and they donât risk him getting both of us at once.â The corner of his mouth tugs upwards. âAll I can do is break stuff. And be a liability.â
Ladybug covers her mouth, horrified. âChatâŚâ she whispers, but he isnât done.
âI know you see me as your partner, and I appreciate that.â he says. âI try so hard to live up to it, butâI just⌠Maybe it would be safer for you if I wasnât. If you had someone else.â
âDonât tell me you havenât thought about it!â he snaps. âHow much more useful being able to disrupt an Akumaâs powers might be? Or to have someone who can tank for you without having to worry about fighting them?â He throws his hands in the air. âI donâtâI just wanted to be usefulâŚâ
âRoi Singe is our age!â Ladybug yelps.
Chat blinks, flicks his eyes toward her, confused.
Ladybug crosses her arms over her chest. âI just learned heâs someone I know,â she says. âHeâs our age but he still wears Velcro shoes because he never learned to tie them.â She grits her teeth, turns her soft smile onto her partner. âDo you really think he sounds like a great partner?â
âStill more useful than me,â Chat grumbles.
Ladybug shakes her head. âNo,â she says. âChat, the number of times Iâve relied on you to winââ
âYou only rely on me because Iâm the only one there!â he says. âIf you had someone elseââ
Her fingers wrap around the bell attached to his neck, yanking him downward, forcing him to meet her eyes. âJustâforget the powers,â she says. âOkay?â
ââŚWhy?â he says. Heâs transfixed, his green eyes locked on her like a cat on a laser.
âI canât trust anyone the way I trust you,â Ladybug whispers, feeling the words squeeze out of her chest as she says them. âYouâCarapace will always put Rena first. Roi is⌠well, not bright. I can rely on them sometimes, butâŚâ She sighs and looks away, feels the tightness leave his muscles as her eyes leave his. âNobody else sees me the way you do, you know that?â She releases his bell, waves her arm over Paris. âTo everyone down there, Iâm Ladybug. Can do no wrong. Thatâs what the team sees because⌠because thatâs what they have to see.â
She hears Chatâs slow, unbalanced breath behind her. âBut⌠you are Ladybug,â he says.
She feels a chill at his words. âNot all the time,â she murmurs, rubbing her arms. âChat. Minou. You wereâyou were the only one who was there, that first day. Theââ She chokes a bit on her next word. âThe day I failed.â
âYou got back up, though,â he says, hushed.
She shakes her head. âNo,â she says. âYou picked me up.â She tilts her head to look at him. âChat,â she says. âIâve told you before I almost gave up being Ladybug. Did I ever tell you what changed my mind?â
âOne of your friends was in danger,â he mutters, digging his claw into the rooftop.
âThatâs why I put the earrings back on, yeah,â she says. âBut I was going to give them back right after anyway.â She shoves his shoulder. âYouâre the one who convinced me to keep them.â
âYeah, butâŚâ Chat draws his knees into his chest. âThat was over a year ago. You donât need me anymoreâŚâ
She rolls her eyes. âI have been borrowing your courage since day one,â she says. âStill am.â
âWhat about nothing,â she interrupts. âBeing Ladybug is⌠the hardest thing Iâve ever had to do.â She bites her lip, staring into the streets, watching a young couple dance together in the sidewalk, laughing under the streetlights. âIâm responsible for the safety of an entire city, and all my friends, and school, and all of my other commitments, and sometimesâŚâ She shrugs. âWell, sometimes itâs too much.â
Chat sighs. âI know,â he says, sounding like a kicked puppy, and oh sweet Tikki does she want to beat the crap out of whoever made that a normal part of his inflection. âI know Iâm not the most professional, and I make things harder on youââ
âMissing the point again, Chaton,â she murmurs, wrapping her fingers around his hand.
He looks up at her, shocked, and she smiles back at him. âIf not for you showing me the joy in this,â she says, âif not for yourâyour sense of wonder, I thinkâŚâ She reaches up with her free hand, nervously twists one of her bangs between her fingers. âI think Iâd have cracked months ago.â She tilts her head. âAs long as I have you,â she murmurs, âthis isnât so bad.â
Chat says nothingâhis mouth is agape, but heâs not even bothering to hide how stunned he is.
âSo⌠yeah,â she says. âMaybe the Turtle or the Monkey would have more useful powers here. But⌠but theyâre not you.â She squeezes his hand. âMaybe itâs not the powers that need balance,â she says. âMaybe itâs just us.â She lifts his hand, places it on her chest. âParis needs me to protect them, and I need you to keep me sane.â She reaches up, flicks his nose. âThat,â she says, âis a very important job, you know.â She smiles. âNobody else can pun quite like you do, after all.â
He raises an eyebrow. âWait,â he says. âYou like my puns?â
Ladybug leans in with a grin. âDonât tell anybody,â she whispers, âbut I groan because I appreciate them.â
Chatâs head jerks backwards. âBut⌠you always sayââ
âIâd be fine with it if you didnât insist on distracting me in battle!â she growls teasingly, jabbing him in the chest with a smirk. âRest of the time? Iâm all ears!â
âI, uhâŚâ He looks away, clenches his fist. Unclenches. âThey actually⌠theyâre not for you. Theyâre for me.â
He closes his eyes. âThey stop me from thinking about how scared I am,â he says.
Ladybug covers her mouth. âOh.â
âA-and, uh, I mean, I can stop! If you, if you need me to, butââ
Ladybug stops him with a hand on his calf. âBut if you need to,â she says, âthen by all means, keep punning.â
He jerks, breath shooting out of his nose in relief. âThank you,â he whispers.
âOf course,â she says, turning back to watch the man in the street below swing daringly around a streetlamp like a pirate, prompting his companion to burst into giggles at the sight. âWhat are partners for?â
