“Jumprope pulled me out of a psychological slump when I started a bit over a year ago. After a pretty bad breakup, I gained a lot of weight and just wasn't feeling right. I burned 99 lbs jumping. Jumprope is truly an amazing pastime! Anyway, here is a short, low-intesity freestyle workout of mine.”
music, a panacea?
Long story short, I had googled “covid misanthrope” / “misanthrope” twice in the past week or so. Sometimes I’ll google things in an effort to figure out if I’m ok.
(I also made an appointment with my therapist. But do I share everything with them?)
I had also ordered my first drum machine, a used Roland TR-8S (”with recreations of the 808, 606, 909, 707, and 727...These are not sound-alike sample-packs or mere recordings of TR drum sounds—each machine is a detailed, down-to-the-circuit model that sounds and behaves exactly like the original hardware”) from someone in San Francisco.
Ever since, song have started to play again in my head. Songs I had completely forgotten about. Throughout the first semester of my dual masters program, I had forgotten essentially everything outside of school. But more recently, these songs have started to come back even stronger.
Youtubing Theo Parrish’s “Overyohead” led to “Lost Angel” and an accompanying comment:
A few minutes prior, I had finished my very second practice-session of the very first song from my very first jazz piano book. I had asked the hospital volunteer-pianist about the books she was playing from, we had connected through our classical background, and she had convincingly sold me on the collection that this book came from.
My three closest friends all also play the piano. Two of them are pre-med and all of them have helped me get to where I am today.
My dad has and continues to spend most of his free time in front of the tv watching music performances. My mom told me not too long ago, that he told her that if he could be anything it’d be a singer. I should get them tickets to an event before it’s too late.
This past week, my classmates and I had gotten excited and reinvigorated by a zoom reappearance from one of our Anatomy professors from last semester and a long overdue encore of his ukulele jam during one of our 10-minutes breaks. After his performance, always overflowing with words of wisdom, he reminded us to practice every day.
I’ve been looking forward to my drum machine.
(Also, just before Overyohead, I had happened upon Justice Der again and his cover of Empire State of Mind. Der had inspired me about a year ago to get my first electric guitar and amp, another instrument for me to learn eventually. I also revisited my reddit post history (while trying to figure out a platform to organize links to inspirational songs) and found posts from not too long ago where I was l first learning how to jam on the piano, chop samples, and upgrade my synthesizer to fit my growth)
