Sooooo I just rewatched the Steven Universe movie for the billionth time and asked myself a question about something that I had never really noticed before. When we first meet Spinel, she’s in her dark form. But when we first SEE Spinel (it’s a very quick shot during Steven’s message), she’s in the garden and we only see her foot, but she’s in her light form. Not much time passes between Steven’s message and Spinel landing on earth and she was dealing with a LOT of emotions.

Something had to happen for her to change from this:

To this:

In that time.

I realized all that at once during “Drift Away” when she gets her memories back and changes back into her dark form and asked myself a question out loud.

“Did Spinel poof herself to get like that?”

And then I took a moment to think about what a gem poofing herself would be analogous to.

Now, maybe it’s just shapeshifting and I’m reading too far into it, but I’m pretty sure we learned that gems can’t change the orientation of their gems by shapeshifting.

This show hits on a lot of touchy subjects and does it all very tactfully, and this is no different. I believe that the implication is that Spinel caused enough damage to her own physical form to poof and reform before coming after the Crystal Gems. But she also represents how it’s possible to bounce back from the darkest depths of your own thoughts and feelings.
