queerbaiting is an incredibly complex subject and i do believe its ramifications expand beyond cinema and television – that is to say i do think it's 100% possible, in the context of a specific industry, for a real person to profit off of the lgbt community by faking or exaggerating interest and membership. but it's in equal amounts ironic and sad that, for the most part, the queerbaiting accusations are being hurled at teenagers and 20 year olds (bisexuals being the most obvious targets) on the internet who simply do not profit from it. "queerbaiting" has become a semantically empty word. or at least it went from "marketing technique for fiction/entertainment in which creators hint at but do not depict lgbtq+ representation" to "young actors/musicians owe it to me to be openly gay regardless of personal circumstances and they must be gay in a way that is acceptable and pleasing to me lest they betray my misplaced trust that is borne out of a parasocial relationship they have no say in" and let me tell you. it's fucked up
