Metropolis (1927) Set Preserved in the German Cinema Museum
I’ve been skimming John Francis Daley’s (director on D&D: Honor Among Thieves) twitter and I continue to be so completely blown away by the movie’s commitment to practical effects and/or minimized CGI where feasible. I mean holy shit look at all this
Practical effects mean that the creators were largely unionized.
i want 10000 hours of bts for honor among thieves
This youtube channel has a substantial library of videos about the miniatures built for various movies. You'll be surprised how many effects were done with real models!

Big-atures: Rivendell
“One of the wonderful treats that came as a by-product to the building of Rivendell was that - while we were building it - Alan Lee was so… attached to this miniature that he’d come down regularly and work on it - with us.” - Richard Taylor
oH RIGHT This was before LotR pioneered cgi for massed crowd behavior
There was so much cool cgi in those movies I just assumed all the clones were too but back then I guess they still couldn’t really be

In this video Adam shows how to build a simple and cheap prop sword for low budget productions or cosplay and hobby purposes.
Wait—the podracing arena from THE PHANTOM MENACE was a miniature? Filled with thousands of Q-tips, and characters like Prince Xizor and Chewbacca?
THE PHANTOM MENACE is 20 years old this year. That is, as they say, nuts. I’ll occasionally feature some things from it this week.
PROPS can be categorized by:
Hand Props. Items an actor carry onstage and off, has or will have interaction with. Anything from pens, journals, dishes, to bags.
Furniture. Couches, sofas, desks, chairs, tables, etc.
Set Props. Set Pieces depicted on the groundplan.
Set Dressing, furnishings. Props used to help make the set feel "lived" in. They can be a messy pile of books on a coffee table, carpets, lamps, etc. They can be interacted with by the cast. Inform your props person if business includes such. Props and Elex consult on practicals like lamps and chandeliers that require electrification.
Trim. Curtains, valances, moldings, etc. attached to the set. Very stylish.
Personal/Costume Props. Items that one has on their person such as pocket watches, umbrellas, handbags, backbags, canes, etc. They may or may not be stored along side the actor's costumes rather than on prop tables. Props and wardrobe consult on these items.
Greens. Artificial plants, vines, shrubs, and other greenery used to decorate the scene.

THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL model shop
Another quick look behind the scenes of The Grand Budapest Hotel in Studio Babelsberg (near Berlin), where the models were made
Irving Sindler was not an actor but his name appeared in many films. He was the property master at Sam Goldwyn’s Studio. In 1925, he started slipping his name into films, on warehouses, bottle labels, store signs, trucks, and factory facades.
This prop master is revealing what really goes on behind the scenes of your favorite shows and movies 🎬
