But humans are making cyclonic storms (hurricanes, tornados, nor'easters, typhoons, etc) a lot worse right now, which means that records keep getting broken. cyclonic storms are shockingly powerful, shockingly large, and shockingly deadly at higher frequencies than ever seen before.

And if you're paying attention, then the impact of climate change becomes very obvious and extraordinarily harrowing. But when you try to talk to someone who doesn't generally concern themselves with the weather, and especially not weather outside their region...they just have no idea whats happening.

Hurricane Melissa is a category 5 storm. It has (as of the time of writing) sustained wind speeds of 185 mph and a central barometric pressure of 892 mbar, meaning it is currently tied for 3rd most intense hurricane ever. It is imminently going to make direct landfall in Jamaica -- meaning the eye of the storm will pass directly over the island nation -- the first time a storm has done that in 44 years. The ocean in the region is 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal, which is what allowed Melissa to more than double its wind speed in 24 hours over the weekend.

Jamaica is going to be devastated. There is no doubt about that. 185 moh winds and a predicted maximum of 40 inches of rain would devastate any country. But to quote their Prime Minister, Andrew Hollness (via AP news):

There is no infrastructure in the region that can withstand a Category 5. The question now is the speed of recovery. That’s the challenge.

Our building will be demolished in 2026, and we need to identify a new location (or locations) for 7 labs and over 1,000 animals, many of which are endangered and part of critical conservation programs.

We've identified a new location for most of AF, but not our research and conservation programs. We have an amazing lead, but it's not confirmed yet.

Our first fundraising project is the AF Emergency Fund as the minimum cost estimates to move this many labs and animals safely is $50,000. (It costs about 50 USD per animal to move them)
