Fred has very wide shoulders, and if he kept his arms down at his sides he would take up a disproportionate amount of space, so he drapes them across the back of whatever heâs sitting on to be considerate to those around him. Itâs the moral and philosophical opposite of manspreading.

E/R, Modern AU, Love is Blind AU (bad reality TV AU for anyone unfamiliar with the source show). Developing relationship speedrun, with all the misunderstandings that follow.
Read Part One Here.
In the pods, our couples fell in love and got engaged â sight unseen. After finally seeing each other for the very first time, theyâre now with us in Mexico for a romantic getaway.
Here, theyâll discover if their physical connection is as strong as their emotional one. Up until this point, the only thing thatâs mattered is who they are on the inside. Now, their love will be put to the test.
Their weddings are just four weeks away. Will their looks, backgrounds, and real world insecurities be too much for them to overcome?
Or will love be enough to get them to the altar â and to their happily ever after?
Enjolras didnât even bother trying to stop his grin when he saw Grantaire get out of the cab at the resort. He ignored the producer off-camera trying to get him to wait for Grantaire to come to him, instead crossing the lobby of the main hotel building in three long strides and pulling Grantaire into a hug. âCareful now,â Grantaire said, his voice a little muffled against Enjolrasâs shirt. âMy fiancĂŠ might see you.â
âCareful yourself,â Enjolras returned, still grinning, âI resemble that remark.â
Grantaire smiled crookedly at him before leaning in and kissing him, a sweet, gentle kiss. âYeah you do,â he agreed. âItâs really good to see you, Apollo.â
Enjolras wrinkled his nose. âStill on the nickname thing?â
Grantaire shrugged. âWell, the last time I called you that, the conversation ended in a marriage proposal, so I figured it couldnât hurt.â
âMaybe weâll have to work on finding a better nickname while weâre here,â Enjolras said, frowning slightly as he looked down at Grantaire. âDid you get taller?â
Grantaire arched an eyebrow. âBeg pardon?â
Enjolras flushed slightly. âI just remember being a little taller than you, thatâs all,â he said. âBut weâre almost the same height.â
âYou just like the idea of me looking up to you,â Grantaire teased.
The producer cleared her throat. âWhy donât you two go check out your suite?â she suggested, in a tone of voice that suggested there was a schedule, and the longer Enjolras and Grantaire stood making small talk in the lobby, the more delayed that schedule became.
âWe might as well,â Grantaire told Enjolras, his smile turning dirty. âI want to see what our options are, after all.â
Enjolras rolled his eyes before offering Grantaire his hand. âSure,â he agreed, âletâs go see how much unusable footage we can film for them.â
Grantaire laughed, and Enjolras grinned, leaning in to kiss his cheek.
This was just like the pods, only better, because now he got to see Grantaire laugh instead of just hearing it through the wall.
He could definitely get used to this.
â â â â â
âI could definitely get used to this,â Grantaire said with a happy sigh, leaning against the railing on their balcony, the sea breeze tousling his hair.Â
Enjolras wrapped his arms around his waist from behind, resting his chin on his shoulder. âThe suite, the view, or the free drinks?â he asked.
Grantaire turned to face him, grinning. âAll of the above,â he said. âThough I think the view is better from this angle.â
Enjolras laughed, leaning in to kiss him before letting go of him to cross over to where the hotel staff had brought their suitcases. âSo which bedroom do you want?â he asked.
Grantaire made a face as he picked up his drink, some tropical monstrosity in a tiki glass, from where he had left it and took a sip. âKind of strange of them to give us a suite with two bedrooms, donât you think?â he asked. âConsidering I doubt most couples will be spending their time doing much other than consummating their relationships.â
âConsummating their relationships?â Enjolras repeated with a snort. âWell, when you put it as romantically as that, I guess it does seem a little strange.â
âOn the other hand, I suppose it is practical to have one room to bone in and another to sleep in,â Grantaire said evenly. âLess messy that way, though I sure hope the show is tipping the cleaning staff extra.â
Enjolras nodded slowly. âAre you ever actually going to get to the point where you ask if weâre spending the night together or not?âÂ
Grantaireâs expression didnât so much as flicker. âIâm not the one who decided to broach the question by asking which bedroom I wanted in the first place,â he said, taking another sip of his drink.
Enjolrasâs lips twitched and he shook his head slowly. âShouldâve known better than to try to pull one over on you,â he said, a little ruefully, sitting down next to Grantaire.Â
âYou would think, after the crash course in the pods, yeah,â Grantaire said, nodding. He offered Enjolras a sip of his drink, and Enjolras shook his head, his stomach already doing somersaults without the aid of rum, or tequila, or whatever liquor was disguised by sugar and fruit. âSo what are you thinking in that pretty head of yours?â
Enjolras hesitated. âHonestly?â
Grantaire arched an eyebrow. âThatâs pretty much all Iâve asked from you, yeah.â
âIâm not a prude,â Enjolras said, unsure if he was trying to convince Grantaire or himself. âIâm definitely not a virgin. Iâve had sex on a first date many times over.â He hesitated again. âBut somehow this feels too soon.â
âEven though weâre literally engaged?â Grantaire asked, not looking at Enjolras as he stirred his drink. âAnd have spent countless hours talking to each other?â
Enjolras nodded. âYeah.â He glanced at Grantaire. âIs that â is that going to be a problem?â
Grantaire pursed his lips. âYou know thereâs no way for me to say yes to that without sounding like a complete asshole, right?â
âSure there is,â Enjolras said. âBecause all I want from you is honesty, too.â Grantaire didnât quite look convinced, and Enjolras sighed. âAnd if youâre worried about pressuring me or whatever, itâs not going to change my mind to know that youâre, I donât know, disappointed that Iâm not ready yet.âÂ
âIâm not disappointed,â Grantaire said quickly â a little too quickly, and when Enjolras gave him a look, he added,
âIâm not! Iâm horny as hell and would really like to have sex with my incredibly hot fiancĂŠ, but Iâm not disappointed that youâre not ready because I want this to be good.â
Enjolras couldnât quite stop his smile. âOh yeah?â he asked, pitching his voice low.
Grantaire nodded. âYeah. I want this to be better than good, especially since this very well may be the only dick you get for the rest of your life.â
Enjolras snorted. âAgain with the romance. Stop, a man can only take so much.â Grantaire laughed and Enjolras took his hand and squeezed it. âI want it to be better than good, too. I want it to be perfect for you.â He leaned in to kiss Grantaire. âI love you.â
âI love you, too,â Grantaire told him before setting his drink down. âOk, so sex is off the table for tonight. How about sleeping together?â
Enjolras frowned. âDidnât we just have that discussion?â
Grantaire rolled his eyes. âNot euphemistically sleeping together, literally sleeping together. You know, sharing a bed. Maybe some spooning if weâre feeling up to it.â
Enjolras nodded slowly. âThat depends.â
âOn what?â
âAre you the big spoon, or the little spoon?â
He said it teasingly, but Grantaire looked like he was considering it. âI can go either way, depending on what my partner feels like,â he said, before nudging Enjolras. âSpeaking of, big spoon or little spoon?â
âI donât know,â Enjolras admitted. âIâm honestly not sure Iâve ever spooned with anyone.â
Grantaire blinked. âWait, really?â
âReally,â Enjolras said. âIâm not opposed to it or anything, but very few of my past relationships were really like that.â
âLike that meaningâŚâ
Enjolras shrugged. âOpenly affectionate, I guess,â he said, suddenly feeling self-conscious. âI â well, this probably wonât surprise you but I donât exactly have a reputation as a warm person, and I suspect that discouraged my past partners from trying to be physically affectionate with me other than when we were having sex.â
He said it plainly enough, but something in Grantaireâs expression darkened. âThat does surprise me, actually. Youâve been nothing but open and warm with me.â
Enjolras barked a laugh. âThat is entirely untrue, or else you have a pretty selective memory.â
âWell, that may very well be, but I stand by it.âÂ
Enjolras just shook his head. âAs much as I appreciate the perhaps misplaced loyalty, you should know that I can be cold. Indifferent to the point of being borderline cruel. Capable of being terrible.â
He meant it to sound joking, but judging by the look on Grantaireâs face, he hadnât quite succeeded. âYou say that as if youâre quoting someone,â Grantaire said quietly, and Enjolras nodded. âIf I ever meet whoever told you those thingsââ
âWhat, youâll kill them?â Enjolras asked, with another sharp, dry laugh.
Grantaire smiled slightly, but it didnât reach his eyes. âNo, but I will hurt them,â he said, almost pleasantly. âAnd I will enjoy doing so.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I have known you for less than two weeks and I already know youâre a good man,â Grantaire said simply. âA man whose sole question after I brought up trying to kill myself was to make sure that Iâm ok now. A man who cares so much about strangers and friends alike, and has an equal desire to protect and fight for them.â He shook his head. âI donât think someone like that could ever truly be a cold person.â
âMaybe not, but you havenât spent any time around me when Iâm focusing on other things,â Enjolras said quietly. âI meant what I said in the pods: I havenât always prioritized romantic partners, and that can absolutely make me come off as cold to someone who expects more.â
Grantaire shrugged. âThen thatâs a problem of expectation management. And believe me, my expectations are not that high.â
Enjolras rolled his eyes. âYes, but as weâve established, itâs because you think you donât deserve to be showered in love and affection so you therefore donât expect it.â
âAnd on the flip side, I rather suspect that since you seem to think I do deserve to be showered in love and affection, youâll try more than you may have in the past which will subsequently exceed my expectations and make us both happy,â Grantaire told him, a little smugly.
Enjolras just shook his head slowly. âWell, weâll see about that.â
âYes, we will,â Grantaire said firmly. âAnd now that weâve gotten thoroughly off-track⌠Big spoon or little spoon?â
Enjolras laughed again, but it was a gentler laugh. âHonestly, I donât think itâll matter much. Because no matter which way we go, weâll find a way to make it fit.â
âSap,â Grantaire whispered, but he was grinning. âStill, I admire your confidence. And if itâs all the same to youâŚâ He hesitated, suddenly shy. âIâd really like to be the one to hold you tonight. To feel you in my arms, so I can remind myself that this is real.â
Enjolras swallowed around the sudden lump in his throat. âI think I can manage that.â
âBut weâre not going to bed yet, right?â Grantaire asked. âBecause itâs still sunny out.â
âVery true,â Enjolras said. âWhich is why I thought we could sit out on the balcony and engage in some good, old-fashioned necking.â
âGoodness gracious me,â Grantaire murmured, his grin turning dirty. âI just didnât think you were that kind of man.â
Enjolras leaned in, whispering in Grantaireâs ear, âHow about I show you just what kind of man I am?â before sucking almost languidly on his earlobe.
Grantaire let out a noise like a mixture between a moan and a growl. âI like the sound of that.â
â â â â â
Enjolras rolled over in bed the next morning, blinking sleepily at Grantaire, who was already awake, lying on his side in the sunlight streaming through the window. âGood morning,â Grantaire murmured, leaning in to kiss him.
âGood morning to you, too.â
âYou know, Iâm surprised,â Grantaire remarked. âYou always struck me as an early riser.â
Enjolras shifted to be closer to him. âI am when I need to be. But weâre on vacation, so I figured it couldnât hurt to sleep in a little.â He ran a hand through his curls. âHowâd you sleep?â
Instead of answering the question, Grantaire drew his fingers up Enjolrasâs side, smiling slightly when Enjolras shivered at the touch. âRemember how you said we would work on finding you a better nickname? Well, I think I have one.â
âDo tell.â
Grantaire grinned. âI was thinking maybe foghorn.â
Grantaireâs grin widened. âIâll take it that you had no idea that you snore?â
âI do not,â Enjolras said, affronted.
âYou really, really do,â Grantaire told him. âDonât worry, I find it cuteâŚmostly.â
âCute enough to put up with it for the rest of your life?â Enjolras asked, only half-joking.
Grantaire pretended to consider it for a moment. âWell, letâs just say I find you cute enough to put up with it until Iâm able to buy myself a pair of ear plugs.â
âAss.â
âYeah, but you love me.âÂ
Enjolras sighed. âYeah, I do.â He kissed him once more before asking, âSo whatâs on the agenda for today?â
âAgenda?â Grantaire repeated. âDidnât you just say we were on vacation?â
Enjolras sat up and stretched. âYes, which applies to things like sleeping in. But it doesnât mean we need to throw all order out the window.â
Grantaire followed suit a little slower, shaking his head almost ruefully. âWow you really are a control freak, arenât you.â
âNo!â Grantaire gave him a look, and he amended, âOk, well, maybe a little. I just donât like being bored. And to be entirely honest with you, the idea of doing whatever it is people do at a resort, of sitting in the sun doing nothing is kind of my worst nightmare.â
âWell, yeah, look at how pale you are,â Grantaire said reasonably. âYouâre bound to get sunburned even with some SPF 200 applied every half hour.â
Enjolras gave him a look. âInevitable sunburn aside, I donât do well when I have nothing to do. I go a little stir crazy.â
âSo I guess a trip to the beach is out of the question?â
âNot out of the question,â Enjolras hedged. âIâm sure Iâll find something to do.â
Grantaire nodded. âYou know, I bet the hotel has a library or some books that you can borrow, and you can bring something with you to read.â
Enjolras brightened. âThat doesnât sound terrible,â he said. âBut what will you do?â
âWhat else?â Grantaire said, grinning. âIâm going to sketch you.â
â â â â â
At first, Grantaireâs plan worked.
Emphasis on âat firstâ.
But by the second hour of sitting on the beach, Enjolras so bored that he was tempted to shred the shitty novel heâd grabbed into confetti just to give himself something to do. âAre you allowed to talk to us?â he asked the cameraman hopefully, having already been shushed four separate times by Grantaire.
The cameraman hesitated. âWeâre really not supposed to,â he hedged. âI mean, we can offer suggestions for what you should do if we think itâll help your story arcââ
âOur what?â Enjolras asked.
âYou know, like what kind of story the show is going to tell about you.â Enjolras stared blankly at him, and the cameraman sighed before elaborating, âLike if youâre the couple that fights all the time, we can suggest a good shot for shooting an argument or something like that.â
Enjolras nodded slowly. âAnd what is our story arc?â
âIâm pretty sure Iâm not supposed to tell you that,â the cameraman said. âIt might make you act differently.â
Enjolras just looked flatly at him. âIsnât it mostly about the editing anyway?â
The cameraman laughed and shook his head. âFine,â he relented. âAt the moment, the producers are leaning towards you two being the âmeant to beâ couple of the season.â
âMeant to be, huh?â Enjolras nudged Grantaire. âDid you hear that? Weâre apparently meant to be.â
âThatâs nice,â Grantaire murmured, not looking up from his sketchbook.
Enjolras sighed. âCan I ask how much longer youâre planning on doing that?â
âSketching?â Grantaire asked, finally looking up. âHonestly I could do this all day, provided the drinks keep coming.â He glanced carefully at Enjolras. âBut Iâll take it youâre about 30 seconds away from losing your mind?â
âSomething like that,â Enjolras muttered.
Grantaire nodded and added one last bit of shading to his sketch before closing his sketchbook and tossing it down onto the sand. âOk,â he said, stretching. âSo how about we take advantage of the sun and the heat and the proximity to the ocean and go swimming?â
Enjolras made a face. âIâm not a huge fan of swimming,â he said.
Grantaire winked. âFor what itâs worth, by swimming I more meant making out in the water, but if youâd rather not get those gorgeous curls wetâŚâ Enjolras scowled and Grantaire laughed, holding his hands up defensively. âPoint taken. How about we go for a walk, then?â
âWalk to where?â Enjolras asked, knowing that he sounded petulant but unable to stop himself. âWe can see a mile down the beach in either direction and thereâs nothing to walk to.â
For a brief moment, a look of frustration flashed across Grantaireâs face, so quickly that Enjolras half-thought he mightâve imagined it, especially since it was replaced by Grantaireâs usual smile. âWell, in that case, thereâs only one thing left to do.â
He leaned in, kissing Enjolras, cupping his cheek and opening his mouth against Enjolrasâs to turn the kiss hot and heady. For a moment, Enjolras returned the kiss, but then he saw the cameraman shift out of the corner of his eye and he was suddenly keenly aware that they were surrounded by other people.Â
Ordinarily, this wouldnât have bothered him â ordinarily, heâd enjoy the moment even more knowing it would undoubtedly make some homophobes squirm â but something about it threw him off and he pulled back. Grantaire frowned, searching Enjolrasâs expression for a moment before asking, âEverything ok?â
âYeah, fine, just â not here, yâknow?â
This time there was no mistaking the frustration in Grantaireâs expression. âSo is there anything you would like to do here?â he asked, a little sourly.
âRight here on this beach?â Enjolras asked. âNot really. Iâd kind of rather be anywhere else than here.â
Grantaire recoiled, his expression darkening. âWow, ok,â he muttered.
Enjolras frowned. âWhat?â
Grantaire shook his head, reaching for his sketchbook. âNothing. Just, youâd rather be anywhere else than here with me.â
Enjolras rolled his eyes. âThatâs not what I saidââ
âYou know what?â Grantaire interrupted. âI have an idea of what you can do. You can follow me as I go to the bar and get a fucking drink.â
The sudden change in tone took Enjolras by such surprise that Grantaire was on his feet and twenty feet down the beach before Enjolras scrambled to follow him. He trailed silently after him, trying to find something to say, but he couldnât seem to find the words.
He waited until Grantaire had ordered a drink at the bar and taken a sip before asking, his voice low, âAre we going to talk about what happened back there?â
âWhat do you mean?â Grantaire asked.
âI mean you getting irritated and needing a drink to deal with it.â
Grantaire rolled his eyes. âI always need a drink, Apollo.â
Enjolras hesitated. âShould we talk about that, too?â
âNo.â Grantaireâs voice was sharp, and Enjolras flinched. âThis is not a cry for help. This is an acknowledgment that sometimes life is shitty and sometimes itâs easier to deal with that shittiness when youâre not fully sober.â Given the look Grantaire gave him, Enjolras could only imagine what his own expression looked like. âAnd I can see Iâve done exactly nothing to put you at ease.â
Enjolras shook his head slowly. âNot to much, no.â
Grantaire made a face. âWell let me put it to you this way â of all my coping mechanisms, my shrink isnât particularly concerned about this one, ok?â
âIâm not entirely sure thatâs as reassuring as you think it is.â
Grantaire held his drink out to Enjolras. âHave one yourself and maybe youâll be more reassured.â
Enjolras frowned and shook his head again. âNo thanks.â
Grantaire shrugged and took a sip before asking, âWhat are you, some sort of teetotaler?â
âNot really, no,â Enjolras said. âI just personally donât enjoy being drunk.â
Grantaire let out a dry, humorless laugh. âAnd I donât enjoy being sober, so Iâm not entirely sure where that leaves us.â
Enjolras jerked a shrug. âAbout the same place we started in, I guess.â
âYeah. I guess so,â Grantaire said noncommittally.
They werenât, of course. The day had started so well and now it felt like there was a mile of space between them, and Enjolras wasnât even sure how theyâd gotten to this point. He cleared his throat. âWell, I think Iâm going to go back to the hotel room, maybe take a quick nap or something.Â
Anything to get away from the situation.
Grantaire took another sip of his drink and leered at Enjolras. âWant some company?â
In past relationships, Enjolras mightâve taken him up on it, attempting to clear the tension with sex, but he had meant what he had told Grantaire yesterday. He wanted to do this right. And this certainly wasnât it. âNot when youâve been drinking, no.â
âWait, seriously?â Grantaire said, incredulous. âIâve had like a sip, itâs not like Iâm too drunk to consent.â
âStill,â Enjolras said, his tone leaving no room for argument. âI would just prefer that we were both sober for our first time.â
Grantaire let out a low whistle. âSo I guess weâre just never going to have sex, then.â
He said it almost snidely, and Enjolras flinched. âAt this rate, probably not.â
Grantaireâs expression hardened. âWell, if it bothers you so much to be around me when Iâm drinking, Iâll make myself scarce.â
Enjolras sighed. âI didnât say thatââ
âAnd I can sleep in the other bedroom tonight.â
Enjolras felt stung. âIâ Thatâs your prerogative,â he managed, even though he felt like heâd been punched in the gut.
âYeah, it sure is.â Grantaire raised his drink in a mock-toast. âIâll see you later.â
Enjolras stared after him as he walked away, completely at a loss for how they had gotten to this point, and, perhaps more importantly, how they were going to find a way to move forward. He glanced over at the cameraman, who had followed them from the beach. âSo much for the meant to be couple, huh,â he said, his own voice sounding hollow to his ears.
â â â â â
True to his word, Grantaire spent the night in the other bedroom, not that Enjolras would have noticed since he stayed out well past when Enjolras finally went to bed.
Given how late heâd stayed out, Enjolras was surprised when he got out of bed the next morning and found Grantaire sitting in the kitchen of their hotel room, cradling a mug between his hands. âHey,â Enjolras said, a little cautiously.
âHey,â Grantaire returned.
âHow long have you been up?â
Grantaire shrugged. âA half hour, maybe,â he said, jerking his chin over his shoulder as he added, âI made coffee.â
âThanks,â Enjolras said. He poured himself a mug before joining Grantaire at the table. He took a long sip of coffee before asking, a little hesitantly. âDo you want to talk about yesterday?â
âWhatâs there to talk about?â Grantaire asked mildly, before making a face. âOk, dumb question, I guess.â
Enjolras took a deep breath. âWe promised each other honesty, so I have to tell you: yesterday was the first time I thought we might not make it.â
Grantaireâs eyes snapped to his. âBecause of my drinking? Because no offense, but you already knew about that.â
âNo, not because of that,â Enjolras said, though he paused before adding, âOr at least, not just because of that.â He shook his head. âYou shut down and you shut me out, and if you do that everytime we donât agree on somethingââ
âI wonât,â Grantaire said, a little too quickly, and when Enjolras gave him a look, he told him, his voice low, âI promise. Yesterday was justâŚit was a lot.â
âYouâre telling me,â Enjolras muttered. He took a deep breath before asking, âSo weâre ok?â
Grantaire gave him a hesitant smile. âWe are more than ok.â
Enjolras nodded before asking, a little awkwardly, âSo what did you do yesterday after weâŚâ
Grantaire shrugged. âNot a whole lot. Went for a walk, sat in the hot tub for a bitâŚand I signed us up for sightseeing tour of Chichen Itza.â
âYou â what?â
Grantaire managed a real smile. âWell, I got the message yesterday. Youâre not really a sit around and do nothing kind of guy, so I thought at least this way, we could look at a cool pyramid while roundly abusing the conquistadors for ruining everything.â
Enjolras laughed. âThat does sound like a good time.â He hesitated before adding, âAnd to be clear, Iâm perfectly happy sitting around and doing nothing, at least, when I have my phone or my computer. Believe me, I can doomscroll with the best of them.â
Grantaire laughed. âNow that I do believe.â
Enjolras drained the rest of his coffee and stood. âWell then, I guess we should get showered so that we donât miss our tour.â
âGood call,â Grantaire said. âDo you want to shower first, orâŚâ
Enjolras shrugged. âI was thinking we could save time,â he said casually, and when Grantaire just stared blankly at him, he added pointedly, âAnd share.â
A slow grin spread across Grantaireâs face. âThatâs the best idea Iâve heard yet.â
âI thought youâd be amenable,â Enjolras said smugly.
Grantaire rolled his eyes so hard it looked like he pulled a muscle. âAmenable, Jesus Christ, who the hell talks likeââ
He broke off as Enjolras pulled his shirt off. âAre you joining me or not?â
âOh yeah,â Grantaire said, stariing at Enjolrasâs bare chest. âIâm right behind you.â
He stood, crossing to Enjolras in two long strides and kissing him hungrily. Enjolras just laughed as he and Grantaire stumbled down the hallway to the bathroom together, unable to keep their hands off each other, the events of the previous day at last behind them.
â â â â â
Between the shower and the trip off of the resort, Enjolras felt much better when they returned to their room that afternoon, in no small part because their trip had been entirely unaccompanied. âYou canât just leave the property without telling us,â one of the producers had told them, exasperated, as they waited to board the tour bus.
âNot according to our contracts,â Enjolras had replied, just a little smugly. âThereâs nothing about not being allowed to take resort-sponsored trips offsite.â
âBut we donât have permission to shoot offsite!â
âDamn, that sucks,â Grantaire had said, in a tone that suggested he could not possibly care less about their filming permissions. âSee you when we get back, I guess.â
To his credit, their cameraman didnât look too put out when he rejoined them after their bus returned and followed them up to their hotel room. Enjolras pulled out his key card, glancing back over his shoulder at Grantaire as he opened the door. âI was honestly half-expecting them to kick us out,â he confessed.
Grantaire laughed. âWhat about our contracts?â he asked. âYou sounded so sure earlier.â
Enjolras waved a dismissive hand. âYeah, I mostly made that up, butââ He broke off as they caught sight of the gift basket waiting for them on the table with a bottle of champagne and a note. âOh, boy. What do you think that says?â
âOnly one way to find out,â Grantaire said bracingly, picking the card up and reading out loud, âGentlemen, now that youâve gotten to know your partner, itâs time to get to know the other couples. Please join us for a party by the beach this evening.â
They both looked at each other. âCould be fun,â Enjolras said cautiously.
Grantaire made a face as he tossed the card back down on the table. âRelaxing on the beach may be your idea of hell, but this is mine,â he said.
âReally?â Enjolras said. âIâdâve thought youâd enjoy the free drinks.â
Grantaire shrugged. âFree drinks, sure, but a cocktail party means small talk. And I hate small talk.â
âThat surprises me.â
âWhy?â
âBecause normally you love to hear yourself talk.â
Grantaire gave him a look. âHa, ha,â he said dryly. âWhat about you? I canât imagine small talk is something that engages your mind.â
Enjolras just shrugged. âMaybe not, but Iâm used to it. In my line of work, I have to attend a lot of networking events, campaign fundraisers, and the like, so mastering the art of small talk was kind of necessary if I wanted to actually get anything accomplished.â
Grantaire looked like Enjolras had just told him he enjoyed getting bamboo shoots shoved under his fingernails. âWell then in that case, you can do the small talk for me while I just stand there, looking cute and drinking drinks.â
Enjolras laughed. âDeal.â
An hour later, both men were showered, dressed, and ready to head to the party. Grantaire had managed to finish the entire bottle of champagne in this time, but Enjolras knew he was trying to calm his nerves and so decided not to make a comment about it.
And when they arrived at the party, he began to regret that he hadnât had the same idea.Â
âI need a drink,â Grantaire muttered, eyeing the tiki bar set up in the corner, and Enjolras took his hand.
âFor once, I agree with you,â he said, letting Grantaire lead the way to the bar.
Once they both had a drink in hand â some brown liquor in a glass with no ice for Grantaire, something bright blue that tasted like coconut for Enjolras â they made the rounds, introducing themselves to the other couples. Most were folks that Enjolras barely remembered even meeting in the pods â and in one case, someone he had hoped to never meet in real life, which, judging by the side-eye Grantaire gave the man as they brushed past, was a sentiment he thankfully shared. But then they stopped to introduce themselves to a couple hovering in the background, and even before he spoke, Enjolras knew who one of them was.
âFeuilly?â he asked, and the man in question lit up.
âEnjolras? Oh, man, I didnât expect to see you here!â
Ordinarily, Enjolras wasnât much one for hugging, but Feuilly was the person he had spoken with in the pods most besides Grantaire, so he couldnât help but reach out and pull him into a one-armed hug. They had realized within about the first fifteen minutes of talking that there wasnât going to be a romantic connection, but Feuillyâs life journey was fascinating to Enjolras, and he had assured him that he was going to track him down once the show was over so that they could be friends in real life.
âI didnât expect to see you here, either,â he said, releasing him. âHow are you? How have things been going?â
The person next to Feuilly cleared his throat, and for the first time Enjolras looked at the frankly menacing-looking man standing at Feuillyâs shoulder. âIâm Bahorel,â he said, holding a hand out for Enjolras to shake, âsince it seems like my fiancĂŠ doesnât plan on introducing me.â
Feuilly rolled his eyes, but it was with obvious affection. âLast I checked you didnât need anyone to speak for you,â he said, and Bahorel laughed.
His grip was surprisingly gentle as he shook Enjolrasâs hand, and Enjolras quickly added, âOh, and of course, I should introduce my fiancĂŠ, Grantaire.â
Bahorel looked Grantaire up and down. âYou box?â He asked.
The question seemed entirely out of left field to Enjolras, but Grantaire just half-smiled. âSometimes.â He nodded toward the empty glass in Bahorelâs hand. âYou drink?â
âSometimes,â Bahorel shot back, his smile widening. âRefill time?â
Grantaire threw back the remainder of his drink. âRefill time,â he agreed. He wrapped an arm around Enjolrasâs waist and leaned in to kiss his cheek. âYouâll be ok?â he asked, glancing at Feuilly, an unreadable look on his face.
âOf course,â Enjolras told him with a smile. âFeuilly and I will just catch up while youâre gone.â
Grantaireâs smile seemed brittle. âIâm sure you will,â he muttered, and was gone before Enjolras had a chance to ask him what that was supposed to mean. But he put it from his mind as he and Feuilly started talking again, picking up exactly where they had left off in the pods.Â
In fact, they were so caught up in talking to each other that it took them both an embarrassingly long time to realize their respective fiancĂŠs had never returned with their refills. Enjolras glanced down at his watch, surprised to see that well over an hour had passed, and he glanced at Feuilly. âAny idea where they ran off to?â
Feuilly shrugged as he finished his beer. âKnowing Bahorel? Nowhere good, thatâs for sure.â
Enjolras laughed. âYou seem to know him pretty well already.â
Feuilly shrugged again, a slow smile creeping across his face. âYeah, well, heâsâŚâ He trailed off as if looking for the right words. âHonestly, heâs kind of my best friend already, which is insane considering I didnât know him all of twelve days ago.â
Enjolras nodded slowly. âI know what you mean,â he said. âI genuinely didnât think that feeling like this was possible in this timeframe, if ever.â
âWell, Iâm happy for you,â Feuilly told him.
âMe too,â Enjolras said. âAnd now I suppose we should go try to find them.â
âProbably,â Feuilly agreed, before adding, a little archly, âGood luck.â
For lack of anywhere better to look, Enjolras headed back to their hotel room, fully expecting to find Grantaire either passed out or waiting for him, but to his surprise, the room was dark and Grantaire was nowhere to be seen. For half a moment, he considered going to look for him, but considering how large the resort was, and without having any idea where heâd gone, he figured his best course of action was just to wait for Grantaire to return. Â
He wasnât particularly worried, at least not at first, but as the time stretched from fifteen minutes of waiting to a half hour to an hour to three, Enjolras had surpassed worried and gone straight to panicked. He was just about to contact the production team and demand that they hunt Grantaire down when the door to their hotel room opened with a bang. âOops,â Grantaire said with a laugh, a little too loudly. His smile faded slightly when he saw Enjolras sitting on the couch. âThought youâd be in bed by now.â
âAnd I thought youâd be back here long before now,â Enjolras said, frowning slightly. His frown deepened when Grantaire stumbled into the light, revealing the beginnings of what promised to be a magnificent black eye, as well as a split lip. He was up on his feet before he knew it, crossing to Grantaireâs side instantly. âWhat the hell happened?â he demanded, reaching out to cup Grantaireâs cheek, surprised when the other man jerked away.
âYou know, itâs not the good of a story,â Grantaire told him, and for the first time, Enjolras recognized the stench of alcohol that seemed to emanate from him. âAnd if itâs all the same, Iâd rather it waited until morning.â
âAnd Iâd rather you explain why you smell like a distillery and look like you got your ass kicked,â Enjolras said sharply.
Grantaire rolled his eyes. âPlease,â he scoffed. âI gave as good as I got.â Enjolras didnât look remotely amused and he sighed, brushing past him to flop down on the couch. âIf you must know, Bahorel and I went down to the beach and, after several more drinks, we decided to beat the shit out of each other.â
He said it casually, as if it was as normal as deciding to play video games or watch a movie, but Enjolras just stared at him. âYou â what?â he said in disbelief. âBut you two seemed to hit it off.â
âOh, we did,â Grantaire assured him. âThough obviously not as well as you and Feuilly.â
Something about the way he said it made Enjolras pause. âFeuilly and I are friends,â he said cautiously. âAnd I donât see what that has to do with deciding to get in a physical altercation with each other.â
âWell,â Grantaire said, drawing the word out slowly, a horrible smile twisting his expression, âit seemed like a better idea than watching our fiancĂŠs flirt with each other all night.â
Enjolras stared at him. âWhat are you talking about?â
âSpare me,â Grantaire practically spat. âYou could barely take your eyes off of him.â
âI â that is not true,â Enjolras spluttered.
âOh yeah?â Grantaire said, smiling that horrible smile again. âHow long did it take before you realized that I was gone?
âThatâs â thatâs notââ
Grantaire barked a laugh. âSure itâs not.â
Enjolras took a deep breath, trying very hard not to lose his temper and make the situation even worse. âLook, I donât have to defend talking to a friend to you, but even if we were flirting, which we werenât, that doesnât excuse you getting drunk and getting in a fight. I mean, Christ, do you have any idea what Iâve been through, not knowing where you were or if you were ok?â
It was the wrong thing to say. Grantaireâs eyes flashed as he snapped, âAnd do you have any idea what Iâve been through? To watch the person you love flirting with another man without even sparing a second thought to the person heâs committed to spending the rest of his life with?â Enjolras flinched and looked away as Grantaire added, âBecause if this is what the rest of my life is going to feel like, Iâd rather get the shit beaten out of me, thanks.â
âAnd if this is what the rest of my life is going to be like, sitting at home and waiting to see if you make it back alive or not, maybe we shouldnât bother.â
The words were out of his mouth before Enjolras could stop them, and he knew from the look on Grantaireâs face that he had crossed a line. âThen maybe we shouldnât,â Grantaire said quietly.
Enjolras sighed. âIâm going to bed before I say something that I regret,â he said, before adding, âYou should put some ice on that eye.â
Grantaireâs expression twisted. âItâs not like a black eye is going to detract from anything my face has to offer.â
Enjolras threw his hands up in frustration. âYou know what â do what you want. You always seem to, anyway.â
With that, he turned and left Grantaire in the living room, heading for the bedroom he had claimed as his own. It took all his self-control to not slam the door after him, and took even more self-control to stay in bed staring up at the ceiling for the next few hours without going to check on Grantaire.
â â â â â
Needless to say, Enjolras didnât sleep well, and was out of bed well before the sun, making a pot of coffee and waiting for Grantaire to join him.
Eventually, the man emerged from his bedroom, looking even worse in the morning light than he had the night before. âGood morning.â Grantaire just grunted, and Enjolras watched him shuffle over to the coffeemaker to pour himself a cup. âAre you ready to talk about last night?â
Grantaire groaned. âCan I at least get some coffee in me before you start yelling at me again?â he asked.
âI wasnât planning on yelling,â Enjolras said, as evenly as he could. âBut we do need to talk.â
Grantaire rolled his eyes. âFine,â he huffed, âthen talk if you want to so fucking badly.â
âThatâs now how this works. Iâm not going to sit here and lecture you. This is a conversation.â
Grantaire took a sip of coffee. âSure sounds like a lecture to me.â
Enjolras ground his teeth together. âThen maybe it is a lecture, because maybe a lecture is what you need. I was scared last night, Grantaire, and if this is going to workââ
âMaybe we both need to be honest about the likelihood of this working,â Grantaire said flatly.
Enjolras stared at him. âWhat do you mean?â
Grantaire shrugged. âI mean, maybe we are just too different. Maybe the things that you thought you found charming are actually just irritating now.â He took another sip of coffee before adding, âMaybe weâre not actually meant to be.â
Enjolras swallowed, hard. âIs that actually what you think?â he asked quietly.
âI donât know. But at this point, maybe itâs worth discussing.â
Enjolrasâs chest felt like it was being squeezed in a vice, and he took a moment before telling Grantaire carefully, âI know we both said some things last night but that doesnât meanââ
âThen what the hell does it mean?â Grantaire asked tiredly. âBecause you knew what you were getting into and for you to say last night that you donât want to spend the rest of your life like thisââ
âI donât!â Enjolras snapped, frustrated. âBut I also donât think that things have to be like they were last night. How things were last night was, I donât know, not normal for either of us, and I donât think weââ
âWas it, though?â Grantaire interrupted. âAbnormal, I mean? Because thus far, outside of the pods, weâve spent more time fighting than anything else. Maybe thatâs not what a lifelong relationship is built on.â He shrugged. âBesides, you seemed pretty ready to end things last night.â
Enjolras took a deep breath. âIf thatâs the impression that I gave you, then Iâm sorry, butââ
Grantaireâs expression hardened. âItâs not the impression you gave me. Itâs exactly what you said.â
âNo, itâsââ Enjolras broke off, frustrated. âI need a break,â he said. âThis conversation is clearly not working, soââ
âSo youâre done,â Grantaire said, his expression twisting. âGreat. Well, do you want the ring back now or later?â
He stood, not waiting for a reply, and Enjolras rolled his eyes. âThatâs notââ he started impatiently, breaking off when Grantaire ignored him, heading toward the door. âGrantaire. Grantaire!â
But Grantaire was already gone, the hotel room door slamming after him. Enjolras swore under his breath before running a hand through his hair.
Half of him was tempted to just let Grantaire go, to just call it quits and go back to his life without having to deal with this. And truthfully, if it was anyone but Grantaire, thatâs exactly what he would do.
But it was Grantaire, and despite everything, Enjolras knew that if he let him go, he would regret it for the rest of his life.
Which meant the only thing left to do was to go after him.
â â â â â
It didnât take long to find him, perched on top of a sandy dune down by the beach. It was too early for the beach to be crowded yet, which Enjolras thought was probably a good thing as he trekked over to him.
Grantaire didnât look away from the gulf as Enjolras approached. âWhat are you doing here, Apollo?â he asked tiredly.
âWe didnât finish our conversation,â Enjolras told him, sitting down in the sand next to him. âShould I read anything into you once again trying to use that inane nickname?â
Grantaire glanced over at him. âOnly that you looked more like a vengeful God than ever before, coming down from on high to smite a mere mortal.â
Enjolras didnât smile. âI didnât come here to smite anyone.â
âThen why did you come here?â
âI told you, we didnât finish our conversation.â
Grantaire huffed a sigh. âIt sounded pretty final to me.â
âWell, it wasnât,â Enjolras said, drawing his knees up to his chest and wrapping his arms around them. âThatâs not something you get to unilaterally decide. And from here on out, you donât get to just leave when things get hard or complicated. Not if we want this to work.â
Grantaire shook his head. âAnd as I told you, maybe itâs time we were honest about the likelihood of this working.â
Enjolras gave him a look. âAnd Iâm telling you that I am. Iâm not saying this is going to be easy, but I still think it can work.â He hesitated before adding, âProvided you still want it to, anyway.â
He didnât know what he expected Grantaire to say, but it warmed his entire body when Grantaire looked over at him, surprised. âOf course I still want it to.â
As much as Enjolras wanted to leave it at that, he knew he couldnât. âYou have a funny way of showing it.â
Grantaire sighed. âWant it to and think that itâs going to are two very different things.â
Enjolras nodded slowly, beginning to see where Grantaire was going. âSo you want us to work but you donât think weâre going to?â
âI havenât seen a whole lot of evidence to the contrary,â Grantaire said, looking back out at the water, his shoulders tense. âSo I guess I just figuredâŚI donât know. Maybe itâs easier this way.â
âEasier what way?â
Grantaire jerked a shrug. âIf we just call it quits now.â
Enjolras took a moment to answer. âI know youâre a cynic, but I never got the impression from the pods that you were this self-defeatist,â he said finally. âDonât you think this is worth fighting for?â
Grantaire shrugged again. âOnly if this is a fight we can win.â
âWhat makes you think that itâs not?â
Grantaire managed a faint smile. âWhere do you want me to start?â
âAt the very beginning, a very good place to start,â Enjolras said, though he sighed when Grantaire didnât laugh. âCâmon,â he said, nudging him. âWhy do you think that this isnât a fight we can win?â
âBecause I know Iâm not good enough for you!â Grantaire burst, and Enjolras stared at him. âAnd I have just been waiting for you to figure it out and leave.â
Enjolras felt like he had just been blindsided. âWhat are you talking about?â
âOn the beach, and then last nightââ Grantaire shrugged miserably. âIâm not enough for you. You were bored hanging out with me, and then you were so excited to talk to Feuilly. And you barely want to even touch me in public, and you donât want to have sex with meââ His voice broke and Enjolras was so tempted to reach out and hold him, but he he hesistated, not sure if it would do more harm than good. âI told you, in the pods, that I was scared that you wouldnât be attracted to me when you saw me and I guess, I guess I just feel like maybe that worst fear is coming true. And so I figured I might as well help it along.â
âNo,â Enjolras said fiercely, and now he did reach out, pulling Grantaire to him and wrapping his arms around him. âOh my God no, no, absolutely not.â
Grantaire shook his head, though he didnât try to pull away. âItâs ok, you can be honest with me. I want you to be honest with me. I know Iâm not exactly a catch.â
Enjolras clenched his jaw. âRemember a few days ago, when I was quoting what someone said about me, and you said if you ever meet themâŚâ
Grantaire half-smiled. âWhat, if you ever meet whomever told me that I wasnât a catch, youâll hurt them?â
âNo, I will kill them.â
Enjolras said it unflinchingly, and Grantaireâs smile faded. âBe serious.â
âThatâs my line.â
For a moment, it looked like Grantaire might smile again, but he settled for shaking his head. âLook, whoever said that to me isnât important. Whatâs important is that they weren't wrong, especially compared to someone like you. No one in their right mind would find me attractive or want to be with me.â
His words had turned bitter, and Enjolras took a deep breath. âI really wish you wouldnât talk that way about me.â
Grantaire looked at him, startled. âWhat?â
âSaying that Iâm not in my right mind,â Enjolras said gently. âBecause I do find you attractive and I do want to be with you.â Grantaire opened his mouth to argue but Enjolras didnât let him. âI love you.â
Grantaireâs expression flickered. âIn spite of everything?â
âBecause of everything.â Enjolras stated it plainly, like he was stating a fact instead of trying to convince Grantaire. âI fell in love with you in the pods and that hasnât changed since getting to finally see you. The only difference is that now I can kiss you whenever I want.â
âBut you havenât seemed to want to do that very much lately.â
For the first time since they had started talking, Grantaire sounded unsure, and Enjolrasâs heart clenched. âLook, Iâm not good at this,â he blurted. âAt relationships. I donât always read the signs correctly, if at all, and Iâm really bad at knowing without being told when my partner needs more from me. So you have to tell me, at least at first. You have to tell me when Iâm doing something that makes you feel bad, at least at first. Itâs the only way this is going to work.â
Grantaire nodded slowly. âIâll try,â he offered, a little tentatively.
âAnd I will try to be better,â Enjolras told him. âBut you also canât just walk away or pick a fight when things get hard. We have to both put in the work to keep going.â
âI know,â Grantaire said, hesitating before adding, âbut when you said you needed a break, I thought you meant from this, from me, from us.â
Enjolras winced, regretting his previous choice of words. âMaybe break was the wrong word to use. I needed a time out.â
Grantaire managed a shaky smile. âTo keep from throttling me with your bare hands?â
Enjolras returned his smile. âSomething like that.â
Grantaire leaned over to rest his head against Enjolrasâs shoulder. âSo where does that leave us?â
âAt the moment?â Enjolras asked. âWell, right now Iâd very much like to kiss you. And past that, I meant it â I love you and I want to make this work.â
âI love you, too,â Grantaire said quietly. âAnd I also want to make this work.â
Enjolras glanced over at him. âAnd do you actually think that itâs going to?â
Grantaire hesitated. âI think that it could,â he hedged, and when Enjolras just arched an eyebrow, he laughed and said, âItâs as good as youâre gonna get from me.â
âThatâs ok,â Enjolras said. âIf I have to, Iâll believe in us enough for the both of us.â He laced his fingers with Grantaireâs before raising their joined hands to his lips to press a kiss to Grantaireâs knuckles. âI love you.â
Grantaire smiled. âI love you, too. Now about that kissâŚâ
Enjolras laughed, leaning in and kissing him. It was almost tentative at first, both men holding back, but then Grantaire sighed against Enjolrasâs mouth and Enjolras cupped his cheek, licking into his mouth as if he was trying to drink him in.
Because he was. Because he wanted this â because he wanted Grantaire.
And he wanted Grantaire to never again doubt that.
But Grantaire pulled back, just slightly, just enough for Enjolras to hesitate, though he stopped when he saw the soft look in his eyes. Then Grantaire leaned in again, his nose just brushing against Enjolrasâs before he again captured his lips in a soft, unhurried kiss. As if they had all the time in the world, as if they could live forever on that beach in Mexico, the warm sea breeze as their only companion.
Grantaire nipped lightly at Enjolrasâs bottom lip and he let out a groan that was probably not appropriate for a television audience. That thought was enough to ground him, and enough to force him to pull away before they went too far. âYou know what Iâm thinking?â he asked, a little breathlessly.
âWhat?â Grantaire murmured, his eyes not leaving Enjolrasâs lips.
âWe should move this somewhere more comfortable.â
Grantaireâs eyes darkened. âYour room or mine?â he asked.
âOurs,â Enjolras told him simply. âLetâs go back to ours.â

Well, this wound up about twice as long as I was anticipating. There will almost certainly be more (my outline has this at 4 parts), but I very highly doubt any of the subsequent parts will be as long as this one.
E/R, Modern AU, Love is Blind AU (bad reality TV AU for anyone unfamiliar with the source show). Whatever the opposite of slow burn is, given the nature of the show. Check the tags for a few minor TWs.
Welcome back to the social experiment thatâs set out to prove, once and for all, that Love is Blind.
This season will be a little different. Our contestants are all LGBTQ+ men, and so unlike in seasons past, they wonât be able to compare notes â or see who anyone else is forming a connection with.
But theyâre all here for the same reason â because they think the dating world nowadays has become superficial, and they want to be loved for who they truly are.
Over the next ten days, these guys are going to finally have the chance to fall in love based solely on who they are on the inside, not because of their looks, their race, their backgrounds, or their incomes.
There will be no devices and zero distractions. The only time they will be able to interact are in the private pods. Theyâll be separated by one thin wall, and wonât ever get to see each other.
All decisions are theirs. Each guy will get to choose who he wants to spend time with, and when he picks the person he wants to spend the rest of his life with, heâll propose. And if the other gentleman accepts, they will each see their fiancĂŠ for the very first time.
After the pods, the engaged couples will head to Mexico to spend a week getting to know each other outside the pods. Then theyâll move into an apartment together back in the real world for the final step of their relationship.
And four weeks later, they will be at their wedding, where theyâll have to make the most important decision of their lives: will they say âI doâ to the person they fell in love with right here, sight unseen? Or will the real world sabotage that love and will they walk away from that person, forever?
people who only speak languages that donât make compound words by smashing multiple existing words together into one big mess of letters with no spaces will never experience the epic highs and lows of reading a salad recipe that calls for âkerstomaatjesâ, which depending on where your brain thinks the cutoff point should be could mean either cherry tomatoes (kers-tomaatjes) or small christmas grannies (kerst-omaatjes). itâs âletâs eat, grandma!â vs. âletâs eat grandma!â all over again, but concentrated into a single word, which, as two prominent examples of humorous language mishaps, should set one thinking about the international linguist communityâs apparent repressed desire to cannibalize their maternal forebears. in this essay i will

the flyer would hit so hard the people attempting it would box and slap their hands against wooden blocks to toughen their skin and hitting a quadruple in the air magnified the power behind tiny nine-year-old Dickâs strikes to the point where it could have probably stunned a metahuman and this was probably a large reason behind his ability to be a crimefighter at an earlier age than any other person in the DC universe and in this essay I will

There is a child in this Walmart being removed from it throwing an absolute tantrum. But instead of typical tantrum raving, this maybe 5 year old kid is *bellowing* "I know my Rights! I know my Rights! I have the right to legal counsel! I have the right to a jury of my peers! I know my Rights! I know my Rights!"
Terribly pronounced. But that's the gist. It's adorable and hilarious.
