kids deserve so much more respect and it turns out that saying that is a great way to locate the horrible people in any community <3
you'll say something as simple as "no child deserves to be hit" and people will crawl out of the woodwork to explain why they should be allowed to beat a 6 year old for spilling some water
you'll say "i think it's weird that adults literally have control over when children are allowed to use the bathroom" and up pops a teacher to say that when they're not shouting at the kids they teach, they're trying to stop them from hiding in the bathrooms
you'll say "i think children shouldn't be forced to eat food they hate" and here comes someone who feeds their kids plain rice and boiled chicken (while eating a nicely seasoned stirfry) claiming that it's okay actually and kids shouldn't be allowed to taste things
you'll say "i think kids should have bodily autonomy" and in comes someone who pierced their babies ears before it was even 24 hours old, frothing at the mouth because their kid wanted a haircut and thats somehow an insult
children are an oppressed class and everyone should be looking back at their own childhoods and making sure they don't ever make a child feel the same way they felt.
being anti ai is making me feel like in going insane. "you asked for thoughts about your characters backstory and i put it into chat gpt for ideas". studies have proven its making people dumber. "i asked ai to generate this meal plan". its causing water shortages where its data centers are built. "ill generate some pictures for the dnd campaign". its spreading misinformation. "meta, generate an image of this guy doing something stupid". its trained off stolen images, writing, video, audio. "i was talking with my snapchat ai-" theres no way to verify what its doing with the information it collects. "youtube is impletmenting ai based age verification". my work has an entire graphics media department and has still put ai generated motivational posters up everywhere. ai playlists. ai facial verification. google ai microsoft ai meta ai snapchat ai. everyone treats it as a novelty. every treats it as a mandatory part of life. am i the only one who sees it? am i paranoid? am i going insane? jesus fucking christ. if i have to hear one more "well at least-" "but it does-" "but you can-" im about to lose it. i shouldnt have to jump through hoops to avoid the evil machine. have you no principles? no goddamn spine? am i the weird one here?

do you want love or do u want proof that you are loveable
šæ My Name is Rola, and This is My Story šæ
I never thought I would be writing this. I never thought I would be begging for help just to keep my children warm, just to feed them one more meal. But here I am, reaching out to you, because I have no other choice.
My name is Rola. I am a mother of two beautiful children, and before October 7th, we had a life filled with love and laughter. We had a home. My children had their own room, filled with their toys and drawings. We would sit together on our balcony, drinking coffee in the early morning light. We had dreams, just like any other family.
But in an instant, it was all gone.
A missile struck. The earth shook beneath us. The air filled with dust and fire. My husband and son ran, stumbling over each other in terror. I stood frozen, the ringing in my ears drowning out my own screams. Our home was shatteredāwindows blown out, doors ripped from their hinges. And when I looked outside, our neighborās house, a place that once echoed with children's laughter, was nothing but rubble and ash.
That was just the beginning.
The bombs never stopped. Every night, I held my children close as the sky rained fire. The sound of explosions mixed with the cries of mothers searching for their babies in the darkness. I covered my children, whispering words of comfort, but how do you comfort a child who is terrified of dying in their sleep?
We had to leave. We walked away from everythingāour home, our memories, the warmth of our life before. My children left behind their favorite toys, their books, their safe space. Now, we have nothing.
No home.
No food.
No clean water.
No way out.
I went to buy sugar the other day. It cost $20 for just a kilo. Food is disappearing, and the little that remains is impossible to afford. Every day, I fight to find just enough to keep my children alive.
I am exhausted. I am scared. I need your help.
I never imagined I would have to beg for my familyās survival. But today, I am.
Please, if you are reading this, help us. Help me save my children. Help us find shelter, food, a way to rebuild even a small piece of the life we lost. If we ever have the chance to leave, we need support. If we are forced to stay, we need a home again.
Every donation matters. Every share helps. Every voice that speaks for us keeps hope alive.
š Please donate if you can. Share our story. Help us survive. š

Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.
as a gilgar gunditj woman, i was not expecting to see my culture on my dash.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Oh, no, there are lots and we've found traces of them.
As already noted above, Australia and the Torres Strait Islands provide us with several who have actual substantial continuity through until today.
But our oldest stone tools date from three point three million years ago.
And we have paint-making and bead making marked at 100K years ago. The oldest confirmed art on a rock is 73K years ago. We have musical instruments starting 42K years ago, and ivory sculpture starting 40K years ago.
And it's important to note that this doesn't mean we know that they were only drawing on rock 73K years ago, or making musical instruments 42K years ago. They may have been making them for tens of thousands of years before that - it just means we know that by 42K years ago, someone had made flutes. On purpose. Very very much on purpose. There might have been sculptures much older than 40K years, but we know that by 40K years, we were sculpting figures out of ivory and wood.
Writing is young. We had civilizations for thousands and thousands of years before the ancient peoples of the land between the two rivers started using clay marks to keep track of their tithes and taxes to their leaders, and started down the road to writing. So yeah, the Sumerians looked back into a mythical once-upon-a-time; most of our entire past as human beings is unknown and unknowable, because between war and famine and migration and upheaval very few cultures get to have stories stretching as far back as Gunditjamara, ones that we still recognize and understand as that history, that we can link to a place and a time when a thing happened.
For most of us it is just those days those most ancient of days and sparse tiny fragments of imagining the minds behind art on cave walls and carved lion-headed figures.
But more of the human story happened before writing was even an idea, than after. A lot more of it.
Zora Neale Hurston was a luminary of the Harlem Renaissance but was relatively unknown and very poor when she died. ā£ā£

Hurston was born in January of 1891. As both a writer and anthropologist, she committed her life to studying and celebrating African American folklore and culture. ā£ā£

Hurston moved to New York after a Harlem-based magazine presented her with a literary award. From there she formed a network, earned a scholarship, and studied English and Anthropology at Barnard College. ā£ā£

She traveled throughout the American South to conduct interviews, record folklore, and collect objects of cultural significance. Her work, which included interviews with enslaved people and their descendants, provided the basis for her novels, including "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (1937). ā£ā£

Hurston was an important voice in the largely male-dominated literary world of the Harlem Renaissance. Her work inspiredāand continues to inspireāfuture generations of artists, authors, and anthropologists.ā£ā£

Mel is so manipulative! Mel is so manipulative!
Yes, we know that, we all watched the same you did which is why we also realized that she actually fell in love with Jayce and stopped trying to use her leverage over him so much
Sheās classist!!
Unfortunately, like many pilties, sheās classist. She and Jayce are quite similar in that area where theyāre not as outwardly aggressive against Zaunites, but they show quite a bit of unconscious bias and donāt care about Zaun until they have to.
SHEāS ABLEIST AND HATES VIKTOR!!
She was rude to him in that scene because she was trying to lure Jayce into making weapons and Viktor wasnāt going for it. She purposefully ignored him and made eye contact with Jayce and talked to him specifically, so she could draw him in.
If she was ableist sheād have been rude to Viktor because heās disabled. She was rude to him because he was vehemently against her ideas and she couldnāt manipulate him like she could Jayce.
I see so many people say these things in support of JayVik and Iām like?? Those two characters can be together without villainizing Mel. You can say Jayce never forgave her for manipulating him when they first met and thatās the reason they didnāt work out (very valid)
But theyāre not the better couple because Mel was an evil manipulative narcissist like Ambessa
Most people donāt like her because sheās canonically with Jayce even though Jayce is most popularly shipped with Viktor. But that doesnāt even make sense because in the end itās alluded that Jayce and Viktor had an extremely deep connection and interpretation is pretty much up to the audience.
Mel is far from perfect (Ekko is the only one who does good and good only) but she has had some character development and also sheās never done anything extremely anti-Zaun and sheās certainly not as bad as some people try to make her o ur to be

do you love winter?
yes
no
While this might be a simple poll for many of us, Gazans do not have the luxury to sit and think if they like winter. The rain which swept through Gaza a few weeks ago washed away many of the tents which were situated by sea-side and thus destroyed resources that were acquired after months of raising funds. My friend Amal Ashour ( @amalashuor ) urgently needs to replace the soggy blankets and she needs to buy warm clothes for winter too. It is dreadfully cold right now and Amal is worried about her little daughter Mariam. She requires these funds to keep her daughter safe during these terrible months of winter. Additionally it has been hard to access any rations. A month ago when I spoke to Amal, she said that flour bags were costing around $150 USD- this has increased to almost $250 USD now!! That too at a time when Amal is not only bearing the responsibility for her own little family, but she is also helping out her extended family as well. So please boost and please donate to Amal's fundraiser. She is going through an extremely difficult time and is responsible for more than twenty people.
Currently at ā¬57,156. Help out however you can. No donation is too small.
