When I explain cultural misappropriation to children, I use the example of The Nightmare Before Christmas. Â
Itâs effective because especially for children, who donât have enough historical context to understand much of the concept, you can still fully grasp the idea. Â
There was nothing wrong with Jack seeing the beauty and differences in Christmas town, itâs when he tried to take what is unique about Christmas town away from those it originally belonged to without understanding the full context of Christmas things is when everything went wrong.
When Jack tries to get the folk of Halloween town to make Christmas gifts for children, etc., children understand that the Halloween town folk do not have the full context for the objects they are making, and they are able to see that the direct repercussions and consequences are very harmful.
what i like about this is the implication that if jack had taken the time to understand christmas town, bringing christmas to halloween town would not have been harmful. thatâs how it works, folks. cultural sharing is GOOD, itâs only misappropriation when itâs done in ignorance and disrespect.
Thereâs an interesting level here in that Jack tried to understand Christmas town. He could see the magic while he was there, and he did try to explain it that way to citizens of Halloween town.  But they werenât interested in the kind of life he was describing, so he started ârebrandingâ Christmas so that it was not like Christmas but was like Halloween. The people of Halloween town, never having actually encountered Christmas, have no way of knowing that what theyâre being told about Christmas and âSandy Clawsâ is inaccurate. Jack also tried to study Christmas and its culture, though he couldnât quite get it; eventually, he literally decides to take it for himself, even as he knows itâs not really for him.  He started out feeling sad the others in Halloween town didnât âget it,â but he then decided itâs not important to fully âget itâ but instead to have it.
So itâs not just accidentally removing things form their context; he has intentionally disregard the meaning of the rituals he purports to be recreating, making them more fun for the recreaters but not like what the rituals are supposed to be and without the related significance.
This is the best way to conceptualize the wrong way to share culture I have ever seen and I think I finally get where people are coming from when they talk about âcultural appropriation.â
thereâs a website where you put in two musicians/artists and it makes a playlist that slowly transitions from one musicianâs style of music to the otherâs
itâs really fun
lady gaga -> napalm death takes a weird detour through epic rap battles of history
This is actually really useful for finding music thatâs in between genres that I wouldnât know to look for.
Hmm gifts I won't be out of the house anytime ever.
I'm moving out of my house soon (I rent a bedroom but have space in the kitchen and the living room is a common area too) into an apartment across town and I was wondering what the best way to get packed and move just across town is?
Packing Tips
1. Donât pack everything at once. I highly recommend that you start packing at least a month before you move. If you take the time to pack in a slow and steady fashion, youâll never end up feeling overwhelmed. When I moved out of my parentâs house, I made myself a promise to pack at least five things every night. I made it part of my nightly routine, and it felt less intimidating. When the day finally came to move, I had nothing left to pack.
2. Pack by usage. Decide what you wonât use during the rest of your stay at your old apartment, and pack that first. For example - if itâs warm out, you probably wonât need winter coats. Youâll eventually get to the point where the only things that are still unpacked are your clothes and toiletries for your move in day.
3. Double tape. Donât expect a flimsy layer of tape to hold all of your precious belongings in place. Double-line each box opening with duct tape. And I do mean duct tape.
4. Label everything. Donât use general labels like âclothingâ, instead specify âsummer shirts, blue jeans, toe socksâ. The more details, the easier it will be unpacking everything when youâre moving in.
5. Fragile items. Wrap things like glasses, plates, chinaware, etc in your clothing or blankets. I actually like to double wrap things, just on the off chance something gets dropped or handled roughly. Wrapping by using things that are not disposable helps save space.Â
6. Containers. Have lots of storage or tupperware containers? Fill them with things before packing them.Â
7. Move piecemeal. If possible, start moving your furniture and boxes before you start living in your apartment. This is not always possible, so you will need to ask your landlord if itâs okay. If they okay it, start moving boxes and small pieces in a week before time.
8. Master list. Iâm a big fan of lists, as you may know. When moving, I like to make a list of everything that needs to be moved, and cross items off one by one as they get accomplished. This ensures that nothing is left behind.
9. Moving party. If possible, rope some friends/family members into helping you move. Supply some basic snacks, drinks, and music, and turn this arduous task into a party. Or, you could offer to buy everyone a pizza afterwards.
10. Double check. After you think youâve moved everything out of your old apartment, drive back over and double check that everything really has been taken care of. Open every cabinet, check every closet, even check the fridge and freezer. I lost a three foot tall state of a gnome and a panini press because I forgot to double check during my last move. Donât make the same mistakes I did!
Good luck! xx
Just learned about garden path sentences.
Theyâre basically a literary prankâ the sentence starts out in such a way that you think you know where itâs going, but the way it ends completely changes the meaning while still being a complete and logical sentence. Usually it deals with double meanings, or with words that can be multiple parts of speech, like nouns and verbs or nouns and adjectives.
So we get gems like
The old man the boat. (The old people are manning the boat)
The complex houses married and single soldiers and their families. (The apartment complex is home to both married and single soldiers, plus their families)
The prime number few. (People who are excellent are few in number.)
The cotton clothing is usually made of grows in Mississipi. (The cotton that clothing is made of)
The man who hunts ducks out on weekends. (As in he ducks out of his responsibilities)
We painted the wall with cracks. (The cracked wall is the one that was pained.)
I hate this.

How do you accept an apology while still maintaining that it hurt?Like, what do you say, because my default is to say âitâs okayâ and move on, but I feel like that gives the idea, or that my attitude in general gives off the idea that I wasnât hurt by what was said/done.
You donât have to say âitâs okay.â You donât even have to say âI forgive you.â You can say simply âthank you for apologizing.âÂ
Does anyone have any other good ideas in this situation?â Mimi
Depression, Anxiety, Loss, & Rebirth...
I grew up poor, with a younger brother, and a single mother. I lost my father at four, by his choice. I think that day the child in me somehow realized he had to become a man on his own, but knew he was not ready, so the crying, scratching, and desperation started that same day coming from the inside out. Small memories of cries for dad, animosities towards mom, and countless fights and temper tantrums still haunt me today. Itâs not so bad now that I am twenty-three. All of that negative energy went towards my father over the years. Iâve shed a lot of it by now. I found my passion for writing in high school, throughout my middle school years along with the high school years, compliments on my writing across all fields fueled me even more to continue. Around sixteen I was faced with a depression, not knowing why things just never felt right, I spent days after-school with my English Teacher Mr. Lewis who would become an open ear, and a mentor for me. He wasnât too much older at that time, maybe twenty-five. He is a person I will never forget. It wasnât until a recent tragedy that I rekindled my passion for writing. Previously living in manhattan as a Tao Group Nightclub promoter, I left the city and came back to boston for a two week vacation with old friends and family. During that vacation, I went out one night with family and friends having drinks, one too many. I was in another depressed point in life also, which probably contributed to my consumption. Long story short, I flipped over my vehicle while driving home. This was hard on me mentally. Many sleepless nights, anxiety attacks, some PTSD symptoms affected me. I quit drinking for a few months, and found writing again. A year has passed since, and I regret nothing for I have learned so much. Iâm a romantic in a sense, and always will be. Iâm the kind of guy that knows what I want, and I know I will achieve those things one day. Thanks for inspiring me to write today, And again Robert, PS: here is a link to my blog; holehearted.tumblr.com If you have any questions feel free to contact me!Â

Morning After Pill for HIV
I think that people forget that condoms protect you from more than just pregnancy.
And there is no morning after pill for HIV.
ACTUALLY THERE IS.
Itâs called post exposure prophylaxis.
http://www.who.int/hiv/topics/prophylaxis/en/
If youâve had unprotected sex and are afraid of possibly being at risk for HIV, please go to the emergency room and ask about POST EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS.
Works for up to 48 - 72 hours after exposure to HIV.
BOOST!
I wouldnât need this but this is actually really cool and Iâd like to share it in case anyone might need it.
If you see this on your dash REBLOG REBLOG REBLOG!!!! You could save a life
SAVE A LIFE đđđđđđđđ
Thereâs a FDA approved daily medication called Truvada, or the PrEP treatment, that is 92-99% effective in preventing the contraction of HIV.
http://men.prepfacts.org/the-questions/
Private insurance and Medicaid cover it. You can also get it for free in a lot of high risk cities like Atlanta, NY, and San Fransisco.
Itâs the same cocktail they give to medical professionals who have had contaminated needle sticks/blood splashes from potentially infected blood. Very effective.
BOOST Â !!!!!
Please boost. You may think youâll never need it, but you never know what might happen in your life
Signal boost!
Hey! I'm a college student working a part time job and I am able to save ~700$ per month. I still live with my parents so I'm saving to move out; how much do you think I should have before moving out? Because I have to furnish the apartment and buy cooking essentials, etc.. I'm planning to live near college and it's a little far from my parents house so borrowing their stuff is not really convenient. Thanks!
In terms of all the things that you need to purchase- it may be best to create an expense chart and figure out how much you will need to budget per item. We also have some helpful posts about finding furniture and etc on the cheap:
http://yournewapartment.tumblr.com/post/167168398344/hello-again-yna-ladies-i-hope-you-are-both-well
In my mind, you should have 3x the amount that your total monthly expenses will be before moving out. Expenses include: rent, utilities, food, cable, etc. You wonât know for sure until youâre moved out and living in the world, so guesstimate. So if your total monthly expenses will be $600, you should have $1800 saved. This ensures that if you suddenly loose your job and have to look for another one, or some other sort of other emergency occurs, that youâll be able to survive for a month or two without an income.
Do some research and decide your apartment budget, and go from there. đ
The Net Neutrality issue summarized
You (or your parents) pay approx $40-$100 or higher for internet.Â
So that you can all use youtube, google, Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc. etc. etc. This isnât limited to social media. Â
Net neutrality says, âOkay, since you already paid x amount of money for the month, you donât have to pay for each asset individually. Enjoy your internet.â NO net neutrality means that your service provider (comcast, at&t, verizon, whatever it may be) gets to say âACTUALLY, it lines our pockets so give us an extra $5.99 for Youtube, Facebook and Twitter. Oh, but that doesnât include Tumblr; that comes with our premium package. Thatâll be $5.99 on its own as well. Now about your Google docs and emailâŚÂ
Thatâs why itâs important. Thatâs why Iâm spamming Net Neutrality crap. If youâre using the internet, itâs YOUR problem.Â
-Email your congressman (text resist to 50409) Itâs easy, you donât have to talk to anyone.Â

Reblogging for my followers who might have trouble remembering whether or not theyâve taken their medicine!
OH MY GOD, THIS WILL HELP ME SO MUCH. I GET SO SCARED WHEN I DONâT KNOW IF I JUST TOOK MY MEDS TWICE.
THANK YOU, IâM ABOUT TO CRY.
Let me share with you guys a product that super helps me remember if I took my meds or not (because while the above is great, I still would manage to confuse myself):
They count as soon as you put the top back on. So if I donât know if Iâve taken my medication for the day, I can check the cap to see how long ago I opened the container! Itâs brilliant!Â
JFC THIS IS A GAME CHANGER.

Hi!! Iâm learning how to cook bc Iâm gonna be a mom soon! I can bake a few things and put simple stuff together, like hamburger helper, rice and biscuits etc. What are some easy things i can put together without completely destroying my confidence lol. And any tips on grocery shopping would be great!
This is highly dependent on your taste preferences, but here are some ideas based on things I cook for myself:
Asian-inspired
stir fried veggies like carrot, broccoli, bell pepper, and green beans with sauce (rice vinegar+soy sauce+honey+ garlic and ginger), add a protein like tofu, chicken, or salmon
fried rice with brown or white rice (add frozen peas and carrots, onion, green onion, scrambled egg, soy sauce, oil, salt + pepper), can add a protein like chicken, tofu, or ham
Tex-Mex/Southwestern Inspired
chili with canned beans and tomatoes, peppers, onions, and ground turkey or beef
enchilada with cheese
chilaquiles
tacos, of course, any toppings you want!
breakfast burritos, freeze and save for later
Mediterranean/Italian Inspired
kebabs
hummus
roasted veggies wraps with feta cheese
pasta!! pasta marinara (red sauce), pasta bolognese (red meat sauce), pesto, white sauce, pasta primavera (spring veggies), fancy mac and cheese and endless more! Add chicken, fish, beef, pork, sausage, whatever!
eggplant with cheese, veggies, and bread crumbs
Soups!
literally any veggies and/or meat that you want, add beans or grains or noodles to make it hearty, and boil then simmer with vegetable broth. My favorites are: potato, carrot, kale, and vegetarian sausage with lentils.
Casserole/Bakes
shepherdâs pie
pot pie (can use store-bought crust or frozen puff pastry to make it easier)
For grocery shopping, shop the perimeter of the store for the healthiest foods, donât shop while hungry, make a list first and stick to it, and look for bulk/unpacked items for the cheapest selections! Compare a few local grocery stores and see where you can get things cheaper, but convenience and time spent is also a factor. I personally like to shop once per week, but this depends on your familyâs needs. I prefer to go early mornings on Saturday! Sundays and weekday evenings after 5 are going to be the most crowded.
Hope this helps!â Mimi
vaginal hygiene & health - an introductory crash course
pass this on to spread knowledge whether you have one or not, #save-a-coochie
- the vagina is the tubular âinternalâ sex organ that some people have. - the âvulvaâ is the set of external sex organs that people with vaginas have. it includes (but not only):
pubic moundÂ
labia minora and majora (inner/outer âlipsâ)
clitoris and clitoral hoodÂ
vulval vestibule (found in between your labia minora)
urethra (where you urinate from)
vaginal opening
-vaginas naturally contain a balance of different bacterias. this bacteria protects the vagina from external bacteria and fungus, provides natural disinfectants and maintains a healthy vaginal pH of 3.5-4.5.
-vaginal pH varies from person to person, day to day, depending on your cycle, your diet and many other external factors,
-all vaginas have a scent. all of them. no two people smell exactly the same, and you shouldnât expect your vagina (or anyone elseâs) to smell fruity or floral.
- if your worried about your scent, you can place perfume or an essential oil to an area around your vulva but not on it. some places like between your thighs or on your lower stomach, for example,
-your body secretes natural fluids called discharge. discharge is how your vagina self cleanses. it is completely normal and vital to healthy vaginal function.
-discharge can vary in amount, color, texture and scent depending on your cycle. each person is different. if your discharge is unusual or abnormal to you and your unique body - visit a doctor if possible.
-abnormal discharge can be green, grey, very yellow, smelly, itchy, chunky, etc.
-abundant discharge can be annoying. you can remove excess discharge in your shower by inserting one clean finger into your vagina, moving it from one side to another and âscoopingâ the discharge out. repeat as needed. this reduces the amount of discharge found on your panties and in turn, reduces vaginal scent.
- dead skin cells and oil can build up between your clitoris and your clitoral hood, so itâs important to lift your hood up and rinse thoroughly so it doesnt harden.Â
-washing your âexternalâ vulvar areas such as your public mound and outer lips is okay, though some may find skin here more sensitive.
-donât douche. you may think it helps but it only masks any problems while causing more. douching throws of your flora, alters your PH and forces bacteria into your cervix.
-water and a soft, clean wash cloth is all you need to clean your vulvar areas that contain a mucous membrane. you do not need to wash these areas. applying soaps or cleaners to these areas removes of natural necessary lubricants and bacteria. this may cause irritation, inflammation, major discomfort and dryness. some amount of moistness should always be present.
-a vast majority of vaginal washes, even those touted as hypoallergenic, still contain dyes and fragrances which are known irritants. read the label.
-while Summerâs eve is a lesser of evils with a PH of 3.0 - 3.5 (still not quite correct), it is still a cleanser. vaginal washes are used to cleanse âbadâ bacteria from your vulva. they also wash away the âgoodâ bacteria needed to maintain a healthy balance.
-castile soaps (like Dr. Bronnerâs) has a pH of about 8.9. these are not suggested.
-never insert any cleansing agents into your vagina.
-the information above applies to any gels, deodorants, perfumed products and wipes, too. these can all disturb your natural balance.
-while they still pose a possible risk of irritation, unscented baby wipes are the lesser of evils regarding âfreshening upâ.
-pay attention to your irritants and triggers. different people, different reactions
-everyone has different stances and different methods that work for them. if you arenât experiencing vaginal discomfort or odd changes, you donât have to discontinue certain product use. i do, however, recommend a trial period of leaving these products alone due to their effects on your vagina.
-allow your vagina to breathe. keep too-tight clothing to a minimum. cotton panties are the best option next to not wearing any at all. rotate the washcloth and towels you use to clean and dry your vagina.
-urinating after masturbation or sex reduces the amount of bacteria in your urethra wiping âfront to backâ keeps rectal bacterial away from your vagina.
-naturally, food alters your vagina. balancing your diet in general and including things like pineapples, strawberries, yogurt, soy (the list goes on!) can influence your pH.
-beverages like water, cranberry juice and pineapple juice are also proven to improve vaginal health, and may even improve taste.
-adding a probiotic supplement can increase the amount of âgoodâ bacteria called lactobacillus-your vagina.
-the less ideal your vaginal balance/pH is, the more vulnerable you are to infections and STDs.
-when it comes to internet home remedies, your mileage my vary. try everything with caution and research thoroughly.
cheers! your vagina will thank you.
