First, I want to note that when I’ve used graveyard dirt, it was not to bind a spirit or ask for its help. I believe the dirt from a graveyard (not a grave, so just within the gates of the cemetery basically) is a powerful ingredient on its own for trance and spirit work, cursing, and banishing. 

What’cha Need:

container (mason jar, or similar)

sigil or symbol for containment (this can be a literal picture of a lock)

metal tool (for digging - knife, spoon, trowel, etc.)

Before leaving, prepare your container by placing the sigil or symbol on the lid. This is to contain the energy from the spirit, which can help protect you from unwanted spiritual energies, as well as contain the power of the dirt so that it doesn’t fade over time. Go to a cemetery where you feel comfortable or know the spirits; As you enter the graveyard, introduce yourself. This can be done silently or out loud. Walk through the grounds, maybe even invite the spirits to walk with you, and take in your surroundings. Visit their graves, new graves and old ones.

Once you’ve spent some time with the spirits, find somewhere in the graveyard where you feel comfortable and is not right on top of someone’s grave. I usually find a tree that isn’t near a lot of graves and sit underneath it. Spend a few more minutes feeling the energy around you; when you have a good grasp on the energy, scoop some of the dirt into the container, closing the lid tightly once full.

As you leave, thank the spirits for spending time with you and leave some sort of offering - it can be as simple as a few pennies or dimes, flowers, or little drawings. Only remove the lid when using the dirt.

Vera Rubin, the woman who discovered the first evidence of dark matter, has died at 88

Vera Rubin, the astrophysicist responsible for confirming the first existence of dark matter, died on Sunday night at the age of 88.

Carnegie Institution president Matthew Scott called Rubin “a national treasure as an accomplished astronomer and a wonderful role model for young scientist.”

Rubin and her colleagues observed galaxies in the 1970s, they learned the motion of stars is a result of a “material that does not emit light and extends beyond the optical galaxy” — also known as dark matter.

Swiss astrophysicist Fritz Zwicky proposed the idea of dark matter in 1933, but Rubin’s groundbreaking work subsequently led to the confirmation of the material.

This finding is what led to the discovery that 90% of the universe is made up of dark matter, a finding some colleagues felt was overlooked and deserving of a Nobel Prize. Read more
