Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

That’s the point of these pieces.

Its commentary about living during the rise of the bourgeoise class in the 19th century.

Every single time you stepped out in society you were precisely aware that you were in the spotlight. You performed & critiqued how well others performed their roles.

You didn’t go to the opera to watch the show at that time- you went to gossip and gawk at the others attending it.

There were a lot of social rules in the 19th century. Many ways to do things wrong- holding something wrong, sitting wrong, addressing someone wrong, wearing something wrong, associating with the wrong people.

But all of that was layered on a social critique that these bourgeoise class people were like new money of the time, they weren’t refined- they were showy and ostentatious.

His work- especially these types of pieces are meant to make you feel uncomfortable & aware that life was a spectacle.
