You can always tell what part of First Contact you're at by how bedraggled Picard's uniform looks.
Plot-induced layer loss, if you will.
In the beginning? Crispy and clean. Full duty uniform. All zippers up. Concerned about the Borg invasion but everything's fine.
But then, one layer sheds. The Captain's Vest of Impending Peril™️ arrives. Still crisp and clean with perceived control of the situation. When you've got Data and Worf with disrupter rifles flanking you, everything's (mostly) fine.
Bad things happen. Everyone scrambles. Data gets kidnapped. Sassy civilians wave phasers around. So thus we see the first signs of deterioration: open vest, slightly unzipped shirt, and the first sheen o' sweat.
But then... even worse. Captain Ahab has to confront his trauma and smash glass. Auto destruct sequence initiated. Worf gets called a coward.... things are a mess. Vest? Gone. Now it's just the sweaty red-shirt of doom and it's rapidly sinking zipper.
Then bam. Borg steal the red shirt. It's now total tank-top dishevelment. Biceps? Out. Sweat? Everywhere. Borg queen neck? Snapped. Data's face? Patchy. The Enterprise? Saved.
Luckily, we circle back to the crispy jacket with all zippers secured, no sweat, and both the future and past are undefiled by Borg shenanigans.
